Oh, yes! Blackboard often dropped down the roast from his ravaginzs along the Carolinas and Georgia. Here it was safe, then, and the spoils of privateering could lie sorted over at leisure. Some years before, if you had stood in the same position, you could have spied un that dauntles privateer Hawkins, as he cruised nonehalantly through the coastal waters, in scart-lt of exeitement. Likely as not, he would find it in the form of a Spanish Man 0' War. Then you would witness the most thrilling spectarle of your life. Hawkins would hoist full sail- to tice? Ho, No! to speed right into the teeth of the Spaniards, but with a smashing broadsidi: Fire when within shot. There would be it few lninutcs of breathless maneuvering hy both vessels, in attempts to get into fighting position, hut you could safely wager that another Spanish frigate was to sink quickly to Old Davie's locker, for few on the sea could match the fierce daring of Hawkins. Then there was Drake, too, who often took a race down to the gulf waters to loot, casually, the gold-cargo of any non-English marine he might sec, for more so than Hawkins were no men adequate competitors against Sir Drake's crafty seamanship. Who could resist the flashing eutlnsses of Drnke's men as they swept over the rails? How faintly we realize the glamorous and romantic part Florida has played in the develop. ment of the New World! Indeed, upon close examination, we find that such scintillating characters as Blaekbeard, Drake, Hawkins, and Morgan roamed extensively through Southern waters, Then, very much alive, apparently, were those dashing, colorful, real but-raneers who failed up and donn the coast of the Florida peninsula! Those atlventurous spirits, just as our gallant Buccaneer athletes of today, bore in their breasts that noble challenge, winner take all . lt is the purpose of this historical rcminiscenee to base a foundation for the appropriate adoption of Buccaneers :ts the standard of Mainland High, consequently, to be more explicit as to the role of our loeality in the annals of huecanet-r history, let us recall incidents which actually took plaee in Volusia County, and on ground over which we have often trod, In the fall of 1565, when France and Spain were at war on the high seas, a most bloody episode occurred right an Ihr? slrcreh of share new kuoaeu as Dilylofza lfratrh! A group of vewels bearing Huguenots to America encountered a unit of the Spanish navy, and in a wild chase od our coast, both fleets were broken up, with the llugoenots landing on our beat-h. They were met and captured by -Spaniards from St. Augustine, but those disavowing Protestantism were spared, the remainder lover two hundred men, women, and ehildrenj were told-bloodedly massacred as they stood helpless nn the sands. And lastly, down at the mouth of the Mosquito Lagoon fHalifax Rirerj were once capttu-ed Italian pirates attempting to escape across the bar, after having sacked the settlement ox' New Smyrna. Now, who eau truthfully say that our Buccaneers are so named, unjustly? -STANLEY PARKYN. -'E T' 1 vt P ws, ' , V k. y V, B if +I, M-, i y .4 ..' 4.114 , e, -. 211 .Page Tsea i
