Pull hard, and drop that dripping chest onto the deck! But he grumlmled to himself, Another worthless wreck! Rusty nails were hammered loose, the lid was opened wide, The captain swore an ugly oath, and cursed the wind and tide, For there in the reeking treasure-hox he only found a pearl So tiny and so worthless that it sent his head awhirl. But what is this? What is this? The crew fell baek in terror. The captain stopped his swearing, and his blond froze tu the marrow! For in the chest this little gem had now hegun to grow And take on dimensions as a hallnon would when you blow. Then slowly from the hottom there rose up, like a cloud, A lovely orchid vapor that closed round it like a shroud. Here it was that first-mate Lyon, quick witted that he is, Interpreted the meaning of this strange and puzzling quiz. See, the first-mate shouted, the colors of orchid and white, Under which we first smiled when we started our gallant fight! VVe recalled how Lindberg and Merrvday, captains of the Buccaneer , Had led the First year's battles with neither fright nor fear. And now, continued the mate, here, a vision of sweet peas. - We all did laugh at this Ctoo effeminate fur such hrave men as theselj The slogan fur With Smith and The second year Bu! with Snyder upon the seas we met a storm or two, at the helm, we found our shipwreeks few. Looking once more into the chest--we all were erowding The orchid mist ltad disappeared, a red veil then arose. This represented red and white, the colors we flew then the good ship was 'We finish to hegin'. Speth for sponsors we were rigged to fight and win. close- And the blood red rose, our flower, and the slogan of our men, We lead, others follow . These three were willed to us hy Bums go: And we liked them well, we have used them ever since. Our second year, 0'Neil and Turner were sponsors, and they helped us out a lot When we would have given up the ship and sunk as soon as not. ln the third year of our sailing, we took our rightful place, And defeated every galley that dared to show its fare. Our sponsor was Mefonnell, who was hrave and gallant, too, And now we look into the chest, and wonder what will next, For we have now begun to end our last year and our best. We are grateful to our final sponsor, Black, for sailing on our sea And saving members of our crew from threatened mutiny! At this point our good mates brave did seal and lock the chest, And slowlv lowered it once more into the waves to rest. Then carefully the latitude and longitude were checked, To mark the place where this strange magic box was kept. Then straight into the future our ship was headed fast, To lead while others follow and to reach our port at last.
