Oh, yes! Blackboard often dropped down the roast from his ravaginzs along the Carolinas and Georgia. Here it was safe, then, and the spoils of privateering could lie sorted over at leisure. Some years before, if you had stood in the same position, you could have spied un that dauntles privateer Hawkins, as he cruised nonehalantly through the coastal waters, in scart-lt of exeitement. Likely as not, he would find it in the form of a Spanish Man 0' War. Then you would witness the most thrilling spectarle of your life. Hawkins would hoist full sail- to tice? Ho, No! to speed right into the teeth of the Spaniards, but with a smashing broadsidi: Fire when within shot. There would be it few lninutcs of breathless maneuvering hy both vessels, in attempts to get into fighting position, hut you could safely wager that another Spanish frigate was to sink quickly to Old Davie's locker, for few on the sea could match the fierce daring of Hawkins. Then there was Drake, too, who often took a race down to the gulf waters to loot, casually, the gold-cargo of any non-English marine he might sec, for more so than Hawkins were no men adequate competitors against Sir Drake's crafty seamanship. Who could resist the flashing eutlnsses of Drnke's men as they swept over the rails? How faintly we realize the glamorous and romantic part Florida has played in the develop. ment of the New World! Indeed, upon close examination, we find that such scintillating characters as Blaekbeard, Drake, Hawkins, and Morgan roamed extensively through Southern waters, Then, very much alive, apparently, were those dashing, colorful, real but-raneers who failed up and donn the coast of the Florida peninsula! Those atlventurous spirits, just as our gallant Buccaneer athletes of today, bore in their breasts that noble challenge, winner take all . lt is the purpose of this historical rcminiscenee to base a foundation for the appropriate adoption of Buccaneers :ts the standard of Mainland High, consequently, to be more explicit as to the role of our loeality in the annals of huecanet-r history, let us recall incidents which actually took plaee in Volusia County, and on ground over which we have often trod, In the fall of 1565, when France and Spain were at war on the high seas, a most bloody episode occurred right an Ihr? slrcreh of share new kuoaeu as Dilylofza lfratrh! A group of vewels bearing Huguenots to America encountered a unit of the Spanish navy, and in a wild chase od our coast, both fleets were broken up, with the llugoenots landing on our beat-h. They were met and captured by -Spaniards from St. Augustine, but those disavowing Protestantism were spared, the remainder lover two hundred men, women, and ehildrenj were told-bloodedly massacred as they stood helpless nn the sands. And lastly, down at the mouth of the Mosquito Lagoon fHalifax Rirerj were once capttu-ed Italian pirates attempting to escape across the bar, after having sacked the settlement ox' New Smyrna. Now, who eau truthfully say that our Buccaneers are so named, unjustly? -STANLEY PARKYN. -'E T' 1 vt P ws, ' , V k. y V, B if +I, M-, i y .4 ..' 4.114 , e, -. 211 .Page Tsea i ,, :rr 43 ., - D- ring, 5-7:-2 '1,.f'!n, q, fwfr? -gt.13f-fill: Q if -'Wi' rw X ix 75 -A-1-R' , !-74 :-' . it , 121, I. -I'-, gr y ,pun ,N ' ' 11 -7'3-5- KU . -'. -' -. Pull hard, and drop that dripping chest onto the deck! But he grumlmled to himself, Another worthless wreck! Rusty nails were hammered loose, the lid was opened wide, The captain swore an ugly oath, and cursed the wind and tide, For there in the reeking treasure-hox he only found a pearl So tiny and so worthless that it sent his head awhirl. But what is this? What is this? The crew fell baek in terror. The captain stopped his swearing, and his blond froze tu the marrow! For in the chest this little gem had now hegun to grow And take on dimensions as a hallnon would when you blow. Then slowly from the hottom there rose up, like a cloud, A lovely orchid vapor that closed round it like a shroud. Here it was that first-mate Lyon, quick witted that he is, Interpreted the meaning of this strange and puzzling quiz. See, the first-mate shouted, the colors of orchid and white, Under which we first smiled when we started our gallant fight! VVe recalled how Lindberg and Merrvday, captains of the Buccaneer , Had led the First year's battles with neither fright nor fear. And now, continued the mate, here, a vision of sweet peas. - We all did laugh at this Ctoo effeminate fur such hrave men as theselj The slogan fur With Smith and The second year Bu! with Snyder upon the seas we met a storm or two, at the helm, we found our shipwreeks few. Looking once more into the chest--we all were erowding The orchid mist ltad disappeared, a red veil then arose. This represented red and white, the colors we flew then the good ship was 'We finish to hegin'. Speth for sponsors we were rigged to fight and win. close- And the blood red rose, our flower, and the slogan of our men, We lead, others follow . These three were willed to us hy Bums go: And we liked them well, we have used them ever since. Our second year, 0'Neil and Turner were sponsors, and they helped us out a lot When we would have given up the ship and sunk as soon as not. ln the third year of our sailing, we took our rightful place, And defeated every galley that dared to show its fare. Our sponsor was Mefonnell, who was hrave and gallant, too, And now we look into the chest, and wonder what will next, For we have now begun to end our last year and our best. We are grateful to our final sponsor, Black, for sailing on our sea And saving members of our crew from threatened mutiny! At this point our good mates brave did seal and lock the chest, And slowlv lowered it once more into the waves to rest. Then carefully the latitude and longitude were checked, To mark the place where this strange magic box was kept. Then straight into the future our ship was headed fast, To lead while others follow and to reach our port at last. The Bucca- neers, under Coach Robert lVl. Hall, won 7, lost l, and tied 2' garnes. In spitc of their loss and two ties, the Buccaneers won the Northeastern Conference Cham- pionship hy a wide margin. This was a feat equaled by no other team except thc team of 1930. Daytona opened its season with Robert E. Lee on September 29. This was a hitter hattle in which Lee overcame st six-point lead the Bucs held through must of the contest. Lee scored in the last two minutes of play and made one extra point to win hy the score of 7-6. Mayberry scored the touchdown for Daytona. On October 6 the Bucs met the strong Orlando Tigers. The Bucs looked like sure winners in the First two minutes of play when Mayberry got away for a long run and a touchdown. But the Tigers came hack with a brilliant air attack to scort- on the Bucs in the last period. Thus ended the game 6-6. Lyon received n serious injury to his hip in this game. 'lihu Bucs played their first night gains: of the season and defeated Palm Beach 6-U. 'lihv gains- was a rough atfair with Bishop and Malcolm starring in the hack- field. Hardwick, Nofal, Fender, and Snyder played excellently in the line. Hardwick, Rich, Fender, and Nofal stood out in the line. Primm, Bishop, and Bowen played well in the backiicld. The Bucs traveled to Leesburg to take the sting out of the Yellow Jackets. In the first four minutes of play the Jackets ran over the Bucs for a touchdown. It appeared as if the Bucs were in for a bad night, but the team came hack and scored in five minutes after they took possession of the ball. The half ended 6-6. The Daytona team scored again early in the fourth quarter, when Bishop made a line buck after i'ecciving a long pass from lvlayberry. Mayberry added the extra paint by smashing the line. This ended the scoring for the night. Hardwick, along with Snyder, Fender, Rich, Nofal, and Gray, was commendable in the line. Primm, Malcolm, Bishop, lVlayberry starred in the backfield. Rich was injured by a terrific block in this game. Next came Saint Augustine with a bag of tricks and a fast eleven to hold Day- tona to a lone tally. Mayberry scored on a long dash in the last four minutes cf play to give the Bucs a 6-0 win. Malcolm, Bishop, and Primm l-lashed in the bacl-tfield, and l-lardwick, Fender, and VVeesner battled ably in the line. A wc-ck later the Daytona team met and tamed the Ocala W'ildcats to the tune of l2-6. Malcolm scored on a long run in the First quarter to give the Bucs a six-point lead. However, Ocala came back with a damaging air attack to end the half at 6-6. Bishop bucked the line for a touchdown and six points to end the scoring for the day. Troy, Primm, Bishop, Mayberry, lVlalcolm, Hard- wick, Johnson, Snyder, and Baggett were good. The highly touted Andrew Jackson eleven was held to a 6-6 deadlock by the hghting Buccaneers. jackson intercepted Daytona's pass and returned it seventy yards for a touchdown but failed to make the extra point. Daytona scored in the last quarter on a 35-yard pass from lVlayber1'y to Fender for their six points. Nofal received a rupture in this game and the Bucs lost a valuable man for the remainder of the season. Hardwick, Nofal, Primm, Fender, and Snyder were outstanding. ' The Landon Lions of jacksonville were next to face defeat at the hands of the formidable Buccaneers. After a had First half in which thc Bucs did not seem to be able to get going, they came back to tally twice to give them a I3-U win, lVlayberry and Malcolm got the touchdowns for Daytona. Bishop kicked for the point. Bowen, Hardwick, Primm, and Snyder were exceptional. The most traditional battle on the schedule came on Thanksgiving day with the DeLand Bulldogs. After a hard game thc Bucs won 18-6. The game was much closer than the score indicates. DeLand scored in the first quarter to give them a 6-0 lead, but the Bucs came back to knot the count at 6-6, as the Hrst half ended.
