Several clubs service athletes Both the Wrestlerettes and Track- ettes provided support and spirit for the wrestlers and trackmen dur- ing the school year. Not only did the Wrestlerettes keep the score at all wrestling meets, but they also put up posters to announce meets. In addition to this, they sponsored an end-of-season banquet for the wres- tlers, Wrestlerettes, and parents. The Trackettes also scored at all the Hawk's home track meets. Mea- suring distances, timing the track- men, and holding up the lap cards, the Trackettes provided much needed assistance. This year a new club was formed, The Trainer's Club, in which the members cared for and treated the athletes' injuries. This was truly a welcomed club. 142

Hobby clubs prove popular Just as skiing has become one of the most popular sports this year, South's Ski Club boasted an enroll- ment of about 350 students. On al- most every Friday in the winter, members were able to take ski trips in the area in addition to several weekend outings. Another hobby club at South was the Chess Club in which members played weekly games of chess while several in the club were sent to the state championships. WQGDC, Maine South's amateur Radio Club, existed for students interested in operating the Radio station and the teletype machine. Members also studied radio theory. Another helpful group was the Swim Timers who aided the athletes by timing for all home meets. All of these clubs provided an opportunity to develop interests. 5 I C? 141
