The social, political, and economic change which has taken place over the years has come upon us so quickly that we rarely stop our train of thought long enough to realize how much this country really has changed. Our very own Maine High School has also changed tremendously since its opening on Thacker Drive in 1902. Very few of us realize it, however, since the majority of us haven't seen more than four years of its history, through our own eyes, and A A know very little otherwise. This year, 1976, our school's 74th year of existence, marks the 200th birthday of our great nation. And so it might seem that right now, during this time of celebration, might be a good time to pause for a moment, just long enough to look back at some of the differences that two centuries have made. Technological advances have been so great over the last couple hundred .RFI r-'LF-T years that we have moved into an entirely new age - the space age - where nothing is impossible. Who would have believed in 1776 that rnenl would be walking on the moon within: two hundred years? What would have been John Hancock's reaction to a story that someday a building bearing his name would lose its top in the clouds? Who could have convinced Samuel Adams that the great state of Massachusetts would eventually be passing legislation prohibiting nude , bathing or warranting school busing? Might Robin Barber, Qfirst in Maine's i class of 19049, have believed that the class of 1976 would graduate 5 nearly 900 seniors? l Today we take such things as automobiles, electric lights, and television and radio for granted, yet such luxuries didn't even exist until long after the U. S. of A. had become an independent nation. We therefore take this time to look back, remember, and compare our present society to the society of the past - to remind us of the great evolution which has taken place. J .
