Field trips broaden cultural knowledge The University of Strasbourg in France will host Maine East French and German students for the month of July. A group of students, accompanied by Mrs. Steinhart, will study at the university in the natural setting of the language. Enrollment of students in foreign languages re- mained about the same as last year, although Mr. Anderson felt they had a better and more positive attitude this year. Some third, fourth, and fifth year classes were again combined because of limited enrollment in the courses. Field trips broadened the cultural aspects of many of the foreign languages. French students visited the Art Institute, ate in a French Res- taurant, and attended a French movie. Spanish students also toured the Art Institute and ate in Spanish or Mexican Restaurants. Italian students attended an opera entitled Orfeo ed Euridicef' Participation in the National Italian Contest brought some students to Loyola University. Latin, Hebrew, and Russian were also taught again. Home Ec welcomes males into new Single Living and Creative Stitchery were the two new courses added to the Home Ec Department this year. Single Living instructor, Ms, Kavathas, helped the students to live independently off their first paycheck. Also, careers for singles, single parenthood, foster care and male-female relationships were explored. Knitting, crocheting, needlepoint, and embroidery were the four basic areas covered in the Creative Stitchery class. The Home Ec Department also sponsored field trips and welcomed guest speakers. Single Living students went on a conducted tour of apartment complexes in Evanston. Foods classes journeyed to the near-by Jewel to examine grocery products and study nutrition, and Clothing 3 and 4 classes visited stores to learn about fashion and wardrobe planning. One of the head nurses from Lutheran General Hospital spoke to the Child Development classes on pre-natal development. Hypnotists, transactional anaylsis experts and professionals from social agencies were among the guest speakers in the Psychology classes. Involvement for boys in both the traditional Home Ec classes, Foods and Clothing, and in the new electives is the primary goal for the department next year. -.est Miss Coconato's Child Development class is one of the few in the school to take time out for a juice break.
