flax New tard rule proves successful The new tardy rule headed the list of changes this year in the Deans' Office. Parent's phone calls no longer excused the tardy student as all late arrivals had to be pre-excused. Mr. Begrowicz, dean of students, believes that the new method was quite successful in its purpose and stated that the number of tardies were significantly decreased this year. Seven unexcused tardies in the course of the year resulted in suspension. However, Mr. Begrowicz doesn't think that a suspension for any reason really serves its purpose. An alternative to suspension is always being discussed at the district deans' meetings, but Mr. Begrowicz says that there is not much that can legally be done anymore. Overall, says Mr. Begrowicz, the attitude of the students has changed in recent years. Students seem to be much more willing to obey rules. Behavior patterns have shifted Mr. Begrowicz said referring to the change in types of problems he has come across in the last few years. It seems that the main cause of trouble has shifted from boys to younger girls. Most of the serious problems this year dealt with freshman and sophomore girls. Spirit climbs with Bicentennial activities The only change in the school administration was a greater emphasis on current policies. Principal Clouser felt that this contributed to a better school operation. Plans for the Bicentennial carried the spirit of '76 to the students through various activities. At the end of the year, the Bicentennial Pair added the final touch of nostalgia. Despite the school's efforts, student interest in the spirit of '76 varied with the individual. Spirit in the school, however, climbed considerably from past years. A positive attitude toward the school combined with the spirit created by winning football, soccer, and cross country teams boosted the student body's spirits, according to Mr. Clouser. Mr. Clouser also partially attributes the rise in school spirit to the economic situation that prevailed. He compares the atmosphere at East this year to the atmosphere at his high school during the Depression He also believes that the job crunch has forced students to take high school more seriously. rt exhibit colors the scene Design and Materials and Photography 1 and 2 will increase next year from JA to one unit of credit. Also, there is a possibility that Photography 3 will be incorporated into the curriculum if it proves successful at West. The addition of Mrs. Habershaw to the Art Department and departure of Mr. Cobb on sabbatical leave marked the change in faculty. Ms. Weinger and Mr, Wulff again took their students to the Brookfield Zoo where the students had a chance to practice life drawing. The work created there was then displayed for the faculty in the lounge. A wider range of projects was created in the Jewelry-making course this yearg and work in brass, copper and the combination of materials was also done. The art exhibit in May marked the departments contribution to Bicentennial activities. ,I N ,- .
