otable alumni . . . by Meryl Levinson What do Carrie Snodgrass, Karen Black, Jim and john Hager, Steve Smith, Don Strandel, and Greg Wray have in common? Maybe you have never heard of them but they all share one thing in common. They are all Maine East alumni who have made contributions to American society. Who would have thought back in 1963 that drama novice Carrie Snodgrass would become that star of Diary of a Mad Housewife, or that Karen Ziegler who attended ME in her freshman and sophomore years, would become Karen Black and capture top female roles in Hollywood films. The former East student has appeared in movies such as Great Gatsby,' Airport '75, Day of the Locust, and Nashville, ln addition to contributing to the film world, East has added to the music world. Steve Goodman who graduated in 1965, has become a well-known song writer and folk singer. jim and John Hager, formerly members of the school's rifle club, have shot their way onto the country music state of Hee Haw. Maine East also trained some sport's heroes. Among them is Steve Smith, who has tackled his way onto the Philadelphia Eagle football team. The Art Department has produced some gifted personalities, also. Don Strandell now owns an advertising agency, while Greg Wray has become art director of a medical magazine, book illustrator, and free-lance artist for Playboy magazine. ln this bicentennial year, Maine East can pat itself on the back for its contribution to AII19fiCaI1 hiSt0ry.
