HHN' The automobile is competing with the weather and the high cost of living for the No. 1 spot in America's conversation today. At the turn of the century, these chugging, clonking, hissing monsters frightened horses. But early manufacturers found it difficult to separate the idea of the horseless carriage from the horse and carriage. One model actually employed a horse's head. Early car enthusiasts were forced to take their machines apart and hide in the woods at the approach of a horse and buggy. One state tried to pass a law that would have forced motorists to stop every ten minutes and shoot off Roman candles. But the automobile survived. Get a horse is not a cry one is accustomed to hearing in the ME parking lot. But why not? The initial cost of a quarter horse runs anywhere from S350 to 51000, depending on its classification: new or used. On the other hand, a used car may be found for S350 to 551000, but the owner of the blue Charger in the ME parking lot paid quite a few dollars more for his set of wheels. Both carriages, with and without horse, require maintenance and repairs along with a little fuel. Monthly maintenance for a horse is at least 5125 compared to S50 for a car. And, then again, the added extras offered on the automobile just can't be found on any brand of horse on the market. Through the growth of the automobile, the love affair with the car blossomed. Cars everywhere were receiving love and tender care from their proud owners. Over the years, cars continuing to bear handle with care signs Hoods are raised in the ME parking lot to find a cure for the constant whining of a loose fan belt or that cough in the engine. Girlfriends look on interested , hoping for a glimpse of their boyfriend if they come up for a breath of fresh air from under the hood. It's hard to tell who's winning: girlfriend or automobile. But, with the engine purring smoothly and his girlfriend close beside him, the king of the road merges into the traffic with his two sweethearts only an arm's length away. A WHEEL

han ing Roles Doors being opened for After 200 years of traditional role playing, Americans are finally crossing the sex lines. Male and female liberation has greatly affected our nation in the past few years. For instance, women were never as successful and respected of the Single Living course offered here, which teaches them to function as bachelors in the areas of cooking, housekeeping, and home furnishings. Girls are now enrolled in Industrial Ed, where they learn such practical but previously male subjects as . . Cynthia Glassman and Katy Griesser in sports as they are today. Billie Jean King and Chris Evert illustrate this point. The decision to let girls play Little League baseball is another indication that stereotype roles are disappearing. Women are now entering such previously male-dominated fields as law, politics, mechanics, engineering, and more. The same things are happening for men. A symbol of this change is former football player turned avid needlepointer Rosy Grier. More men are accepting and enjoying jobs as nurses, airplane stewards, and secretaries. Maine East students reflect this national trend. For instance, there are several guys taking advantage auto care and repair and electronics. Federal law will soon speed up this progress toward sexual equality. The Tital IX regulation, designed to eliminate sex discrimination and provide equal opportunity will be affecting Maine East by 1980. Physical Education and certain sports will be coeducational to comply with this law. Nowadays the average person is more modern, less chauvinistic. Doors are now being opened for both sexes in that liberation is allowing both men and women to be free to be the people they want to be. -i. 7-
