Above: The rising cost of gasoline is a puzzling situation, 'specially for students. from 66 to 58q, gasoline prices have driven their way ipward. Right: Although prices have gone up, students still crowd the lunch lines. What do you do Saturday nights? lf you're like most people, you won't answer Out to eat or To a movie. These two activities have become a luxury that the average student can't afford. But this is not just a present day problem. Prices have always been changing. For instance, back in 1966, the popular Class A hot lunch cost 35st. A year later, students were faced with a 51 price hike. The price continued to increase a nickel a year until it reached the current price of 654. That's not too bad, though, because for that price you can get a hamburger, fries, salad, and milk. The closest competition would be McDonalds, where it currently costs 844 just for a hamburger, small fries, and a small soft drink. Although they're a necessity, books are a bigger strain on student allowances. Both hard and soft cover book prices have gone up, as a student can tell by just looking at his book bill this year. But prices are not rising in school alone. After school, students must cope with rising food and amuse ment prices. For example, the All-American candy bar, as everyone remembers, used to be a nickel. Now, how ever, a smaller bar costs up to five times as much. The same thing holds true for movies. They too, used to be a nickel. Now, they're anywhere from 51.00 to 55.00 But all is not lost. Some things have stayed the same or even gone down. For instance, the LENS costs the same as it did last year. Considering the rise in printing and publication costs, you're really getting a bargain!!!

From bobby socks . . . to jeans The time is the 5O's, it's after school and time to bop on over to the malt shop: girls putting on their best bobby socks and guys their baggiest baggies. Now the time is the 7O's, after school and time to hop on over to McDonalds. But what is the typical outfit for girls and guys? ln the 70's there is no typical outfit. Anything from knee-length skirts to raggedy blue jeans goes. We have regressed in many styles such as: long skirts, argyle patterns, and vests with suits, but have also forged ahead with a diversity of styles ranging from halters to the layered look. .R iris-'Q' 1 wif' an CK Q 'SFLJ X 37 sr ,a U i 7-' Y- ts A, l Al i ,Qf nr .T s M 4 ', ,. f QW - .' HHN' The automobile is competing with the weather and the high cost of living for the No. 1 spot in America's conversation today. At the turn of the century, these chugging, clonking, hissing monsters frightened horses. But early manufacturers found it difficult to separate the idea of the horseless carriage from the horse and carriage. One model actually employed a horse's head. Early car enthusiasts were forced to take their machines apart and hide in the woods at the approach of a horse and buggy. One state tried to pass a law that would have forced motorists to stop every ten minutes and shoot off Roman candles. But the automobile survived. Get a horse is not a cry one is accustomed to hearing in the ME parking lot. But why not? The initial cost of a quarter horse runs anywhere from S350 to 51000, depending on its classification: new or used. On the other hand, a used car may be found for S350 to 551000, but the owner of the blue Charger in the ME parking lot paid quite a few dollars more for his set of wheels. Both carriages, with and without horse, require maintenance and repairs along with a little fuel. Monthly maintenance for a horse is at least 5125 compared to S50 for a car. And, then again, the added extras offered on the automobile just can't be found on any brand of horse on the market. Through the growth of the automobile, the love affair with the car blossomed. Cars everywhere were receiving love and tender care from their proud owners. Over the years, cars continuing to bear handle with care signs Hoods are raised in the ME parking lot to find a cure for the constant whining of a loose fan belt or that cough in the engine. Girlfriends look on interested , hoping for a glimpse of their boyfriend if they come up for a breath of fresh air from under the hood. It's hard to tell who's winning: girlfriend or automobile. But, with the engine purring smoothly and his girlfriend close beside him, the king of the road merges into the traffic with his two sweethearts only an arm's length away. A WHEEL
