Prom log cabin to Skyscrapers by LindaWarmack just two centuries ago, miles and miles of open fields with log cabins scattered here and there was a familiar setting to the early Americans. Today, such a picture can only be found framed on a wall. Towering skyscrapers, sprawling factories, and mile after mile of suburbs have replaced the log cabins of yesteryear. Beauty and uniqueness are now found in our country's mil- lions of buildings, bridges, and mon- uments. With more than 22,000 public high schools alone, it's hard to be- lieve there was only one public school in the country in 1635. As America's buildings have grown in size, shape, and number, so has Maine East. The original build- ing on Thacker in Des Plaines was opened in 1902. By 1929 we had out- grown our old school and moved into our present building. Maine was originally supposed to be built in an shape, but the architect was killed in a car accident before the building was finished. As enrollment increased, several additions were made to the school. A bird's eye view of Maine East in 1951 and a floor plan of the school in 1953 show how much we grew in just two years. Growing population demanded the addition of three new Maine schools. The rags to riches success story summarizes America's first 200 years in the fast-moving world, and Maine East has grown out of its suc- cess to join the ranks of America's many fine learning institutions. But in its struggle to the top, this sweet land of liberty has never forgotten its promise to be the land of the free and the home of the brave. - '. ,..- .M P PSM! V,.1.--. From bobby socks . . . to jeans The time is the 5O's, it's after school and time to bop on over to the malt shop: girls putting on their best bobby socks and guys their baggiest baggies. Now the time is the 7O's, after school and time to hop on over to McDonalds. But what is the typical outfit for girls and guys? ln the 70's there is no typical outfit. Anything from knee-length skirts to raggedy blue jeans goes.
