For almost sixty years Maine has been growing, both in size and stature. This year has had great import on 'Maine's develop- ment. The student body was divided, and the new school began operation. Problems arose, for persons can be transplanted more easily than friendships and loyalties, but Maine's spirit answered the challenge and strode boldly into the future, proud of its magnificent growth and boasting of immi- nent expansions. We have always known that ours is an outstanding center of intel- lectual achievementy recently Maine has re- ceived nationwide acclaim for its academic excellence. Maine is many things to many people. Such extracurricular activities as athletic events, student theatricals, homecoming pageantry, election week, school publica- tions, student government, and promotion and commencement, help develop Maineites to the level of maturity society demands. However, Maine is more than a factory pro- ducing pol'shed personalities. lt nurtures friendships and lasting ties that benignly bind schoolmates through life, it is purpose- tul work, activity that envelopes Maineites in a blanket ot knowledge that protects from the frustrations of illiterate existence.
