Here we have made friends--lasting friends whose faces in this book will re- call many happy experiences. ln years to come, we shall realize the true value of this book. We may settle down for an evening of reminiscing in which a picture or a name or a date from these pages will recall for us a shining hour. We will, no doubt, sit and wonder in amazement--did we really dress and act like that. We will remember that important basketball game which meant life or death at the time or perhaps election week with all its thrills, and the teachers, ah. the teachers. Since last September when the '49 Lens staff was first organized, we have felt that we have a great responsi- bility to the students at Maine. That responsibility is the preparation of the yearbook which will be a faithful re- cord of this school year, and which will be a source of information and pleasure to you in the years to come. Yes. It was at Maine where we worked and shared many pleasures. We, therefore. dedicate this book to all those who have made us proud of our Alma Mater and who have been part of a great year of life at Maine. Peak Ricfqe aa .Za Plainefi ADMINISTRATION . . The production of the yearbook consumes most of the out-of? class time of a highly qualified staff. Tradition has made superior yearbooks a requirement, and, somehow, each staff manages to perpetuate this tradition. Securing some six hundred pictures showing more than seventeen hundred students requires the utmost in diplomacy and cooperation, and it is the proudest hour of every staff men- ii Lens Staff: Don Tollefson, Laverne Flentie, Jean Miller, Jeanne Pagiiueeo, Gerry Schmidt. la-ns Assistants: Barbara Kiefer, Sue Schulze, Ruth St'lll1llfUlSlii. On the Maine campus girls too have a part in athletics. The Girls' Athletic Association directs the activities of the girls who are interested in sports. It provides a well rounded program including such activities as soccer and hockey in the fall, basketball and volley- ball in the winter, and baseball in the spring. This organization not only enhances the pleasure of whole- some competition, but also affords the opportunity for the girls to develop an appreciation of sportsmanship. While participating in these scheduled sports, the girls eam points toward awards, which are presented at the annual G. A. A. Play Day in the spring. There were thirty-five sohpomores on the football squad and fifteen on the basketball team. One hundred and twenty-three students of this class participated actively in the music department. There are 219 boys and only 209 girls who are sophomores. Yes, these prospective upperclass- men have proved their capabilities time .ind again and are well qual- ified to take over the reins of the junior class next year. Pictured above are the sophomore class of- ficers and sponsors. Shortly after World War II ended, the Class of '49 entered Maine. They didn't elect class officers or have many parties that first year, but they worked hard to make the Stadium Drive a success. Their sophomore class party gained fame for them, for Lena the Hyena appeared to help celebrage Dogpatch style. They suffered through the bus strike and leamed to accept the new look with its long skirts and short haircuts. As upper Classmen fhgy united their efforts to improve the Student Council and re- vise the Constitution. After the flurry of finals, marching practice, honors assembly, the breakfast, and the Prom at the Country Club, the Class of '49 wait anxiously to receive their diplomas and go out into the world-- citizens of tomorrow. At the left are the senior class sponsors, Mrs. Leila Baas and Mr. john Lienhard, and the class officers, joan Millard, treasurer, jean Williamson, secretary, Ian MacFarlane, presidentg and Dick Bledsoe, vice-president.
