A VARSITY FUUTBALL Glenn Young, Honorary Captain ' in To Robert Beth Robert Davrs 'K Robert Fay .W Jack Jenkins Wayne Kaufman Walter Koelling Ch6f'2S L0C'35Ci0 Rodney L0l1Singer lan THESE BUYS PLAY T0 WIN During the 1947 football season, Coaches Kenneth Olson and Kermit Ambrose moulded an in- experienced squad, with only two returning lettermen, into one of the most powerful teams in the West Suburban Conference. Maine finished third in the final standings when the Blue and White lost two and tied one of the last three games after winning six in a row earlier in the season. Three of the players were rated outstanding enough to be placed on the All-Conference team. Taclcle Sam Vance, center Joe Cole, and halfbaclc Glenn Young were given this honor, Cole was also named on the All-State team, the first Mainite ever to receive this award. Captain Young led the conference in ground gaining and was its second most prolific scorer. ln the final analysis there can be nothing but plaudits for the '47 Demons and a low bow to the capable coaching staff. Playing its first year replacing the former lightweight team, the frosh-soph football squad had an average season with three wins in nine contests. Coaches Bruno Gates and Robert Wells brought the inexperienced underclassmen to peak strength near the end of the season when the squad scored all three of its victories inthe last four games. From ANNUAL STUDENT CUUNCIL ELECTION Election Week! These two words remind Maine stu- dents of the colorful campaigning For Student Council officers in March. Remember how the students chose three candidates for president and three For secretary? Then campaign managers were piclced by the candis dates, and campaigning began in earnest. Making posters, hanging them in the early hours of the morning, and planning slcits for the assembly that climaxed those exciting days completely interrupted the homework schedule of many Maine students. The student council election is an outstanding example of practical educa- tion, For Maine students are given the opportunity actually to participate in the responsibilities of a demo- cratic election. xi' ' X vw 'm fl.
