Left: A typical scene in Mrs. McGroth's health office. 4- Just like any town, we have a pretty complete list of com- munity services, too. For instance, there is our l5,000-volume library where Mrs. Janet Clough, Mrs. Margaret Johnson, and their student assistants spend busy days checking books in and out and helping us find reference material. We have our own store in the bookroom, where Mr. Harold Markworth supervises an organization that sells everything we need in the way of supplies besides handling all financial transactions that pertain to student activities. Almost the only thing Mrs. Valta McGrath, school nurse, can't do by the way of giving us a complete health service is to hand out aspirins--that would be against a state law. In addition to ministering to our aches and pains, she oversees the annual physical examinations and TB tests. Those delicious odors that begin wafting through the halls about third period are evidence that the kitchen staff of our own town restaurant is on the iob. And we've all been around at 3:45 when the custodians descend upon us with their mops and brooms, keeping our town clean. Most of us don't even stop to realize that these people also see to it that we're kept warm, repair anything that is broken, wash our towels and tank suits, help us with stubborn locker padlocks, and keep our 63-acre campus always a thing of beauty. We should be pretty grateful to these people who make it possible for the wheels of activity to run smoothly. Top left: Mr. Harold Markworth, business man- ager, and Mrs. Geneva Leggett, bookroom clerk, go over their accounts. Above and left: Scenes in the kitchen and cafeteria. Miss Janet Olin, new manager, is shown in the background. ln addition to the regular noon lunches, the cafe- teria staff is often called upon to provide food for teas and banquets. 8:00 to 4 00 In spite of all one hears these days about the irresponsibility and want of seriousness among teen-agers, our principal activity is still the business of acquiring the skills, habits, and knowledge that will best fit us to participate in the larger community life we shall enter upon graduation. Under the direction of a well- qualified, and w el I- prepared staff of 73 classroom teachers, Maine offers CI wide variety of courses planned to meet the needs of every type of student. Six courses of study, each lead- ing to a different diploma, may be pursued here, college pre- paratory, commercial, industrial arts, home economics, fine arts, and general proficiency. -LY I a xii vnu vvv L as Q Hun, -U . M i They're almost unnoticed, working always behind the scenes. Somebody else often gets the credit for the fruit of their efforts. But you'd be surprised to learn how often the successful com- pletion of other department proiects is dependent on their cooperation. For top place among un- sung heroes of the school we nominate those folks up in 355 and the art tower who spend long hours working under the direction of Miss Kath- ryn Patton and Miss Doris Kessler to help along almost any activity you could name. They're iohnny-on-the-spot to make posters, design pro- gram covers, and help with decorations for dances and other social affairs, and their stage designs have been the perfect background for many a music program and variety show. The 1946 football season was without doubt one of the most color- ful and successful in Maine history. Under the excellent coaching of Kenny Olson, the heavies tied with LaGrange for the conference cham- pionship and established themselves as one of the foremost prep teams in the state. The only flaw in the season was losing the Homecoming game to Glenbard, the team which came in third in final standings, in Coach Olson's first loss at Maine. In the nine games played, the Demons chalked up 236 points to their opponents' 51. As West Suburban teams go, Maine had a fairly light squad but made up for the lack of weight in speed and all-around cleverness. The team was strong in every position and placed George Tomich, Bob Jungkans, Stan Bohannon, Jim O'Brien, and Joe Cole on the all-conference team. Bohannon was the leading scorer in the conference, with Jungkans and Tomich placing fourth and fifth, respectively. The top-notch football and clean sportsmanship which the Demons displayed throughout the season should give every Mainite reason to be proud of the great 1946 heavyweight football squad. The lightweight gridders placed sixth in the conference with two wins and five losses. Considering the inexperience of the team and the fact that this was Coach Herman Rider's first year with them, the Ponies did as well as could be expected and more than made up for their defeats with fight and good sportsmanship. fgifii, if. v 2 . ft., 5 I sf.-is-'Y-ak'-L-F .,...':. , 'Y S C .p - -i ' Bob 0'Brien Elmer Olson Murray Smith Jim Yardley Vince Yotti gap: F 1744-flue Top row Ken Zimmerman Bull Brown Don Milne Robert Anderson Bob Moore Herb Webb Harvey Wolfe Bob Mann John Stevens Bill Olds Dick Drewes Second row Coach Her man Rader Bull Lewerenz Bull Cornelius Deen Guthrey Stew Peterson Bob Warren Dave Wright Ken Fulle Bill Kreuger Charles Rohe Ian McFarlane John Smythe Coach Clyde Watson Third row Bull Murphy Tom Bade Bob Fay Roland Holmes Ken Hayes Charles Meronl Neal McDyer Tom Hosch Bob Lane Bob Hull Bottom row Manager Bill Hornblower Bud Appold Roy Veltch Howie Roecker Gene Ruckstaetter Rod Lonsmger Manager Jim Kongabel Top row: Bill Haeger, Bill Johnson, Bill Springston, Steve Humes, Ed Fairbanks, Walter Shower, Don Holtz, Jim Hapeman, Dennis Church, Herb Koelling, Russell Steinken.
