Suspended for several years, the paper is again appearing regularly--this time in mimeo- graphed form. Its fortnightly issues are genuine reflections of student views and ideas. Its pages fulfill the need for an organ of student expres- sion, and the paper offers invaluable opportunity to students who wish to gain experience in writing for publication. In fact several of its contribut- ing staff have graduated to contributing to local newspapers. The Pioneer is a medium for Maine's students. 121 GEORGE HAND JEANNETTE MACLUCKIE VERNA HACKE Associate Editors DONALD FABIAN Editor-in-chief A I JACK CHAMBERLAIN PRISCILLA KIESSLING LOIS AEPPLI MARTIN HALVORSEN Asst. The entire staff has cooperated to the best of its ability to make this book to be a photographic record of the activities of the year 1956-37 at Maine. Undoubtedly future Lens staffs will make great progress and great improvements on this early effort, but this year's Lens has accomplished its purpose in breaking ground and starting the way. This Lens is the first yearbook Maine has had for a decade, since the last issue of the Quill appeared. Since the days of the Quill, Maine has grown not on y n its physical size and the number o s students but in the variety and scope of its activities, and The Lens has tried to record some portion of these activities in It? pages. The book has demanded many hours of work from all who participated in its creation. The design and complete layout of each of the pages was done by our art editors, Jack Chamberlain and Priscilla Kiesslingg and on the successful completion of this work depended the success of the book. The photography, which is the life blood of the book, is the work of Mr. Corgan, George Lindstrom, Henry Setzler, and Martin Halvorsen. The unsurpassable typing was done by Marjorie Turner and Betty Redman. Invaluable also has been the cooperation so generously given by Miss Chapman, Mr. Lewis, and Mr. Legg. The book belongs to the students, but the work belongs to the staff. The support of the students in subscribing to the book was the guarantee fund. But on that foundation this year's staff has had to build a new book without any guide or example from past history. The difficulties attendant to the task for the most part could not be foreseen and had to be met as they arose. To the abilities, enthusiasm, persistence, and encouragement of all those who worked with him, the editor cannot offer praise enough. 125 Q ,sa 6 1.4 S ? 1 ' S2 5.
