1971 MAIDONIAN MAIDEN HIGH SCHOOL . MAIDEN, NORTH CAROLINA If a man has a talent And learns somehow To use the whole of it, He has gloriously succeeded And won a satisfaction and triumph Few men ever know. Thomas Wolfe TABLE OF CONTENTS INTRODUCTION........1 ORGANIZATIONS......18 SPORTS.............36 PEOPLE.............62 ACADEMICS .........82 ADVERTISEMENTS....128 EDITOR-IN-CHIEF......JAN MARTIN ASSISTANT EDITOR . . SARA NULL A time of creation and discovery Of destruction and disenchantment A few rocks from a distant sphere Protected in strong boxes. A few children, on a dirty street Defenseless in the world The Age of Aquarius, of harmony and peace And the shadow of war engulfs a people “Peace Now! Peace Now! Hunger and poverty and war and fear Can it ever end? If our hands could touch without fear of scars . . . A new decade came Now it speeds by elusively, threatening to become yesterday too fast. In a world which never seems to let its people rest, a generation searching inward seeks to let the people be Change almost becomes natural novel becomes normal. Talking, laughing, sharing deeply his ideas with others longing to excel in some way in some thing. He is alone now and the empty halls echo his footsteps. 12 With all of its tradition and often madness, sports still drew larger crowds than any event at Maiden, continuing the contributions of the past. Maiden: four years of opportunities to pursue and develope individual talent There is that in me I do not know what it is — but I do know it is in me. Not I, nor anyone else can travel that road for you. You must travel it for yourself. It is not far. It is within reach. Walt Whitman In Memory . . . Oscar Maddox, Jr. The death of Oscar Maddox saddened us here at Maiden High. Oscar was a very special person, and he will be missed in many ways. Few people have better mastered the art of politeness than he. He always had a smile for everyone. Oscar did not talk much, as was indicated by his Superlative of “Quietest, but when he did his words bore no malice. I had the privilege of being in Oscar's homeroom and of attending classes with him for three years. We had lockers beside of each other during these years. It never mattered whether he had five minutes or five seconds to get to class — he always would move and let me get my books first. I realize that this in itself is a small consideration, but Oscar was con- tinually performing considerate acts. Oscar Maddox was a gentleman. There is an old proverb that says, “One never realizes something's worth until one loses it.” I think this applies aptly to Oscar. His quiet, mannerly ways and that friendly smile of his will long be missed in the halls of MHS. 15 The Editor In Appreciation In October of 1970, the Senior class was faced with choosing a teacher for the annual dedication. It discovered that this was a very hard decision to make, for Maiden High is blessed with a fine teaching staff. We have a fac- ulty that cares about students, not only as students, but as people. This is a rare quality to be treasured. But one teacher stood out partic- ularly in our minds. She has been with us since our freshman days, in- stilling principles of good grammar and a love of literature, yet also teach- ing us valuable lessons in living with each other peaceably. She forced us to be creative individuals who were unafraid of doing something different- ly. Even as we progressed into up- perclassmen she was there to support us in our everyday struggles. For these reasons and many, many more, we the Senior class, dedicate the 1971 Maidonian to Mrs. Betty Blackburn. ORGANIZATIONS - Maidonian Staff EDITOR. Jan Martin; Ass’t Ed..
