PRINCIPAL Human behavior, coupled with Nature and Nature’s God, has determined that the present Senior Class is destined to play its role at one of the important cross roads of human history. Scientific achievements, existing ideologies, racial overtones, and traditional human behavior patterns combine to confront the youth of today with obstacles too great for any pre- vious generation. Let no one doubt that the present Senior Class will cope effectively with existing challenges, or that it will rise to a higher level to accept new responsi- bilities. There are those of us who have confidence in this graduating class and believe its members will as- sume their full share of the challenge to make the world a better place. Mr. H. S. Shepherd H. S. SOUTHERN ASSOCIATION A nineteen member committee representing the North Carolina Committee of the Commission on Second- ary Education of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, visited Maiden High School, Maiden, North Carolina, on May 11 and 12, 1966. Following the dinner meeting in the high school lunchroom the evening of the first day, the Committee heard selected reports by the faculty and then discussed with the staff the philosophy, objectives, and organizational procedures pertinent to the self-study. The second day presented opportunity for the Committee to observe the school program in operation. Faculty reports re- lated to the study had been in the hands of committee members several days prior to the visit. The Visiting Committee performed its various assignments with dispatch and in a most efficient and pro- fessional manner. Commendations, recommendations, and decisions proved highly objective and most help- ful to the school being evaluated. The Evaluative Criteria, National Study of Secondary School Evaluation, 1960 edition, was the official printed guide used by the local staff during the approximately two-year study period. In addition, help was forthcoming from other sources as well, for during this time, application had been made to the Department of Public Instruction at Raleigh, North Carolina, for re-evaluation for accreditation on the state level. In November the school principal, representing Maiden High School, attended the regional meeting of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in Miami, Florida. There formal action was taken on Maiden High School’s application for membership in this accrediting association. Later in the year, a certificate of membership was received by our high school showing that this school is now a member of Southern Asso- ciation of Colleges and Schools, and is accredited by that agency. This achievement is considered to be a most important milestone in the High School. 11 history and development of Maiden
