Wtyt 1968 Jlatooman Published by the Senior Class of Maiden High School, Maiden, North Carolina Table of Contents Dedication................. 5 Administration............. 9 Classes....................16 Features...................46 Activities................ 72 Sports.................... 92 Advertisements............122 Editor . . . Nancy Heffner Business Manager . . . Mary Ann Hewitt Advisor . . . Mrs. Martha C. Stephens 3 FOREWORD We, the members of the Senior Class, arrived at Maiden High School as new, frightened freshmen, and the delightful atmosphere of the affairs of our school enveloped us. Our first high school classes, dates, dances, exams, and before we knew it, a year had flown by—then two—then three-and now, we are Seniors. New experiences—graduation. Where has the time gone? With each passing second, minute, day and year we looked forward to graduation. Now, the coming of graduation leaves us not only looking back at our high school years, but also looking forward to the years ahead of us. During our high school years many new experiences have come our way—our high school rings ... Informers ... Homecoming ... The Mighty Blue Devils ... all of these to add that special glow to just a few of the wonderful years of our lives. This goal that we have at last attained has been for years only a dream. But now with the publication of the 1968 Maidonian, the last high school annual we will ever receive, we realize that this dream has become a reality, and we know that we must accept the responsibilities that accompanied this goal. The 1968 edition of the Maidonian could never begin to recall all the memories of our high school years, but pleasant memories will always live on in our hearts and minds. 4 DEDICATION We, the members of the senior class, find ourselves short of words to express our deep apprecia- tion and warm affection to a teacher who has proved to be dedicated, understanding and helpful to us in every way possible. In gratitude to her faith in us as a class, we proudly dedicate this, the 1968 Maidonian, to our loyal and devoted teacher— Clarinda A. Britt 5 MOMENTS TO REMEMBER Maiden’s “All Conference” cheerleaders. 6 A pack of proud papas. A typical morning break. The Mickey Mouse Club and its fearless leader. “Cookie” Lowe is crowned 1967 Christmas Queen. Maiden girls battle against Hildebran. Too funny for words. Our football team ranked second in the conference. PRINCIPAL Human behavior, coupled with Nature and Nature’s God, has determined that the present Senior Class is destined to play its role at one of the important cross roads of human history. Scientific achievements, existing ideologies, racial overtones, and traditional human behavior patterns combine to confront the youth of today with obstacles too great for any pre- vious generation. Let no one doubt that the present Senior Class will cope effectively with existing challenges, or that it will rise to a higher level to accept new responsi- bilities. There are those of us who have confidence in this graduating class and believe its members will as- sume their full share of the challenge to make the world a better place. Mr. H. S. Shepherd H. S. SHEPHERD SCHOOL BOARD MR. FRANK LITTLE MR. JAKE SMITH MR. MICHAEL SIGMON SECRETARY MRS. SARAH TRULL 10 SOUTHERN ASSOCIATION A nineteen member committee representing the North Carolina Committee of the Commission on Second- ary Education of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, visited Maiden High School, Maiden, North Carolina, on May 11 and 12, 1966. Following the dinner meeting in the high school lunchroom the evening of the first day, the Committee heard selected reports by the faculty and then discussed with the staff the philosophy, objectives, and organizational procedures pertinent to the self-study. The second day presented opportunity for the Committee to observe the school program in operation. Faculty reports re- lated to the study had been in the hands of committee members several days prior to the visit. The Visiting Committee performed its various assignments with dispatch and in a most efficient and pro- fessional manner. Commendations, recommendations, and decisions proved highly objective and most help- ful to the school being evaluated. The Evaluative Criteria, National Study of Secondary School Evaluation, 1960 edition, was the official printed guide used by the local staff during the approximately two-year study period. In addition, help was forthcoming from other sources as well, for during this time, application had been made to the Department of Public Instruction at Raleigh, North Carolina, for re-evaluation for accreditation on the state level. In November the school principal, representing Maiden High School, attended the regional meeting of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools in Miami, Florida. There formal action was taken on Maiden High School’s application for membership in this accrediting association. Later in the year, a certificate of membership was received by our high school showing that this school is now a member of Southern Asso- ciation of Colleges and Schools, and is accredited by that agency. This achievement is considered to be a most important milestone in the High School. 11 history and development of Maiden MARTHA C. STEPHENS A.B. English and French Pfeiffer College BETTY C.
