If you look down through the hails and in the class rooms, you'll probably not see me in form but I'm there in spirit. . .And that's just what I am. . .The spirit of Maiden High... THE BLUE DEVIL. I have been around for years, but now I am in a new building with many new students. . .but then, new stu- dents have come along every year. It doesn't take long for them to get the spirit 'cause I'm a busy little fellow. Oh, and by the way. . .I'm a good Devil. - • safe . r We, The Senior Class, as the first class to graduate from our new school, hope that the fu- ture classes will take care and be proud of it as we are. From these walls echo the memories of moments spent in gay as well as earnest hours. It is our desire that each future pupil will enjoy his high school days as we have enjoyed ours. GENEVA KEEVER SHIRLEY FORTENBERRY, Testators CLASS HISTORY At the council of Vienna when Prince Metternich was told that the events should be recorded and responded by saying that the men who make history have not time to write, the great statesman was mistaken. For the class of 1954 have not only made history, but we have found time to record it. We have been taught that Grecian history is a poem; Latin history a picture; Hebrew history a religion; modern history a chronicle, and I would suppose that the history of the class of '54 is a miracle. With these few introductory words the class historians will endeavor to trace briefly the movements of our group. All of us vividly recall the commencement day four years ago when our names were called by Mr. Richard F. Little and we were presented our diplomas, which, figuratively speaking, closed behind us the grammar grade doors and at the same time assured us admission into the realm of Mr. Little, Miss Cox, Mr. Flack, Mr. Sharpe, and Miss Painter. With fear and trembling we ascended the stairs that September morning because we had already heard how hard the high school studies would be and how they would make fun of us and call us green freshmen. There were fifty of us and we had to be divided into two groups, one under Mr. Sharpe and the other under Miss Painter. Our fears soon left us and we realized that there are many things worse than being the youngest students in a large group of others. We were learning fast. Our class officers for the freshman year were: Joe Harwell, president; Jerry Ramsey, vice president; Betty Lineberger, secretary- treasurer. But the Sophomore year! Well, we were the brightest class, or at least we thought so. Mr. and Mrs. Stafford, Mrs. Caldwell, Mr. Shepherd, and Mr. Jordan were our guiding lights. Our officers were Mickey Frye, president; Japtha Propst, vice president; and Shirley Fortenberry, secretary-treasurer. Under the leadership of James McRee, president; Mattie Lee Parker, vice presi- dent; Joanne Turner, secretary; Jean Arndt, treasurer, we started our Junior year. Hillbilly Weddin1 was presented and we think it was a big hit. Perhaps our greatest achievement was our trip to Williamsburg, Virginia, which the American Legion helpedto sponsor. Then another important event was the Junior-Senior Banquet with Rainbow the theme. Here we all shone in our new formals and suits. As we approached our Senior year there were many things on our minds. Forty students were present as we walked into the doors of our new consolidated school for the first time. Howard Davis was elected president; Japtha Propst, vice president; Mary Faye Hawn, secretary; and Yvonne Whisnant, treasurer. Now we are dignified seniors, with Mrs. Stafford as our homeroom teacher and advisor and Mr. Shepherd still our principal. Money! Money! Money! It may be the root of all evil, but it was also neces- sary in order for us to publish our annual. So now we are looking forward to May Day, the Junior-Senior Banquet and our Senior play. We have labored diligently. Graduation will soon be here and we are both hap- py and sad. With so noble a past and so glorious a future we are confident that we will always be prepared for whatever lies ahead of us. We are sad because now we are leaving MAIDEN HIGH SCHOOL and all the friends we have known for twelve years. School days are ended.
