Even though we did look puzzled and amazed, we soon overcame it after the initiation party was given in our honor. After we got acquainted, we elected our class officers, who were: President-Wylma Kel- leyg Vice President-Jack Moon g Secretary of Treasury-Wanda Ponder. Student Council representatives were: Wylma Kelley and Jack Moon. During the first year we lost Betty Cafin, Bob Brain- erd, and Johnny Nichols. As sophomores, we entered M. C. H. S. with an enrollment of twenty-three. The class officers we elected were: President- Ferne Allen, Vice President-Jean Davis, Secretary of Treasury- Shirley White. Student council representatives were: Wylma Kel- ley and Jack Moon. During the year, we lost Marilyn Hough and Marilyn Walker. They were replaced by Aurettia Gilmore and Les-- ter Endsley. In 1946, the Junior Class was increased by three new students. They were Lucy Middleton, Richard Byrd, and Mildred Siedschlag. We lost Joan Zook. We chose Wylma Kelley, president, Flerne Al- len, vice president, Jean Davis, secretary of treasury. Student coun- cil representatives were Wylma Kelley, Jean Davis, Betty Epper- son, and Jack Moon. Our class play, The Young Imp , which proved to be a great success was presented under the direction of Mrs. Lida Stowell. We entertained the seniors at the annual banquet given at Col- lege Hall, May 2. . We ordered our class rings at the beginning of the year, and received them a week before Christmas. ,, . In the fall of 1947, the seniors elected their class officers.-They were President, Larry Gnageyg Vice-President, Jack Jones, Secre- tary of Treasury, Jean Davis. The student council representatives were Robert Mitchell, Wylma Kelley, Jack Moon, and Ferne Allen: Wylma Kelley was chosen as the D. A. R. representative for Good Citizenship. During this year Norma Jean Rayburn and Jim Dean dropped out. We gained three new members, Ruth Myrick, Larry Gnagey, and Jack Jones. The senior class chose as their motto, The Door to Success is Labeled 'Push ' and the class flower, white gardenia, and the class colors, green and white. On April 9, the senior class presented, Professor, How Could You , directed by Mrs. Sifferd. We, the senior class, were guests of the juniors at a banquet at the Mahomelt High School, May 8. The members of the senior class were well represented in many of the school activities, among which were: student council, finger- print staff, baseball, basketball, football, track, band, chorus, cheer- leading, and Retro Staff. 17 v Senior Class lDill We, the Senior Class of Mahomet Community High School in the year of our Lord, one thousand nine hundred and forty-eight, being of sound mind and memory do hereby make, declare, and publish this, our last will and testament hereby re- voking and making void all former wills and promises made by us at any time. As I look into my crystal ball, what appears first but the face of Bob Warner. He is now a pilot of a B-29 in the U. S. Air Force. Although this job keeps him on the run, he still finds time to do a little mimicking of Donald Duck on the side. In Walt Disney's comics, he presents quite a sight. I Ah, what's this-the face of -Betty Epperson, our champion senior typist comes forth. She now teaches commercial subjects at the U. of I. She can't quite decide which one she wants for her future husband, so she just dates them all. Better pick one now, Betty, for tomorrow may be too late! And we all know that you don't want to be an old maid! Or is that what you have made up your mind to be at present. As the crystal turns, the reflection brings a picture of Lester Endsley seated in the pulpit of the First Methodist Church, Bondville, Illinois. Don't tell anybody, but we think he has a cue-ball hair cut under his pulpit hat. Being a preacher keeps Lester busy along with the problem of taking care of his family of six. As we leave Lester, we hope that he doesn't catch cold after getting that cue-ball hair cut. The crystal's revolving brings us a glimpse of Shirley White. What's this- there's Perkins in the picture tool They are living on a little farm east of town. Wayne takes care of the hogs while Shirley takes care of the two sets of twins. I guess they acquired their family all at once! Shall we leave these two and let them enjoy their private life in the country. Q .Now the prisms of the .beautiful crystal brings us an image of Ernest Bailey sitting on the banks of the Sangamon River, fishing. This is his day off from the First National Bank of which he is the president-Ernie was always soooo good in bookkeeping that we see no reason why he shouldn't have such a position. Peggy, his wife is at home busily preparing supper. Round and round the ball goes and where it stops. nobody knows. Ah. there is Aurettia Gilmore seated in the alteration room of the Collegiate Cap Az Gown Com- pany. She has now acquired the position of head seamstress. Elden Koble from Sa- dorus is still trying to win her hand-Who knows, maybe some day he will suc- ceed. That is, if Aurettia ever gets around to saying yes. Look, the crystal ball is lighting up-now the light is gone and there is the face of Richard Byrd. There is Lois Siedschlag by his side. What's this? Who are those thirteen children behind them. There's a farm house in the background also. Thirteen is an unlucky number, Richard. As Lgare into the crystal ball, I see a happily married couple sitting by the fire side .ln a little farm house near Fisher, Illinois. As the girl turns her face, I see that it is the former Carolyn Yount, one of the members of the senior class of 1948. The boy by her side is Richard Stauffer. How did you ever decide on just one from all those Fisher boys, Carolyn? I guess it can be done. Smoothing my hands over the crystal ball, it reveals the Parkhill Stables, east of Mahomet. We find two of our former seniors, Jean Davis, and Ferne Allen, en- joying their beautiful ranch for horses. Right at present we see Fern chasing Jean out of the house with a rolling pin. Their little red headed boy is yelling- No, No, Mommy, don't do that . We shall leave them and let them keep on enjoying their exciting life. The crystal ball, having made its complete evolution and started on its second cycle, we find an old maid school teacher sitting at her desk in the history room of M. C. H. S. She is having trouble with her oldest student, Virgil Mahin. He has come back to take a post graduate course in only one subject-History. I wonder why he chose that particular subject? Now do you know who the old maid is? It is none other than Ruth Myrick, one of our most mischevious seniors of 1948. She is still having trouble deciding whether she wants a man or a teaching position. Slowly revolving, the radiant crystal clears and we see a group of sailors on an ocean liner on the Pacific Ocean, and among them is Jack Moon. Jack isn't mar- ried yet, but he is quite the cassanova with the girls in all the ports that he lands in. He still enjoys smoking his pipe better. Ship ahoy, Jack' After this picture slowly fades away, we see an image of Wanda Paul. She is living in the big city of New York. Her husband, Bus Mahin, is the director of the New York Symphony Orchestra. We wonder how guitar music sounds in an or- chestra. In her spare time, Wanda has the pleasure of being the composer of the music that her husband directs. Not bad for a starting position, Wanda. It may im- prove along the 'way-don't give up hope. The shining crystal looks hazy in the inside and as it clears, we hear the pound- ing in the Rippy Ford Factory Inc. As we move along the aisles, we see an office door with the name Toad Rippy, President , engraved in gold. We knew Eugene 20 liked Fords but not that well. Toad drives a big Cadillac back and forth to work. What's the matter don't you trust the Ford anymore? He hasn't found his ideal girl yet, but he can use his new Cadillac to find one any time he wishes. Happy hunting, Toad. Again the crystal is clear and what should appear but the face of Larry Gnagey one of the last additions to the senior class of 1948. Larry is still running to the call of Regina, but this time he must, for they are married now. He is the presi- dent of the Underwood typewriter factory, in Chicago. You would never have guessed his future from all the paper he wasted in typing class. Also in his spare time he coaches three sons in the art of love-making. He was a pretty classy wooer in his high school days! Just ask Regina. As the Crystal continues on its revolving base it stops as the face of Jack Jones slowly materializes on its surface. Jack and his buddy, Phil Teare are still quite the Don Juans in this little town of Mahomet. Every Saturady night, they jump into their car and pick up one of their best girls and start out for a good time. Don't tell anyone but Jack still has his ambition to be a millionaire-All the luck in the world, Jack, you'll sure need it. Well, ah do declare! There's the face of our little southern gal-Lucy Middleton! Ohi, there's a model A Ford, and what do you know-there's Tub Brown too! I guess they liked the old ford so well that they never traded it in for a new one. They now have a little two year old girl, and the only words that she can say are you all . Doesn't that sound strange to you? They own a little farm in Alabama and they spend every summer there. Tub likes to come back to his own town of Mahomet in the winter. We always knew that Lucy and Tub would get together! As this southern picture fades away the scene changes to the Chemistry Room at M. C. H. S. Watch out, it looks like it's on fire! Oh no! Bob Mitchell, our most studious Senior student has just completed one of his experiments and it blew up on him. His face is certainly red for he hates to make a mistake in front of his students. Bob teaches Chemistry and also Latin. Bob is an old bachelor and he flirts with Ruth Myrick, who teaches History across the hall. But from the looks of things Millie Siedschlag is still his one and only. I wonder when Bob will get up enough courage to ask her to marry him. 'Better hurry up Bob, or some one else will grab her away! Gazing steadily into the ball this scene changes, and we see a horse ranch south of Mahomet. Yes, it belongs to Mary Lou Pfiester. Mary Lou is the head woman around the ranch and besides keeping the horses up she cooks for 10 threshers ev- ery day in the summer. Her husband tends to the rest of the farm and Mary Lou won't let him get near her horses. She is very particular about them. Mary Lou doesn't have any children at present but she has a group of girls come over to her house and spend the weekend every week or so. Don't tell anybody but she goes by the name of Ma Pfiester to them. Even though she is married, she spends most of her spare time at the Ponder's house. Turn about is fair play, so the Ponder girls spend most of their spare time out at her house! Mary Lou has won quite a few prizes with her horses and we wish her all the luck in the world on her coming entries. The Crystal Ball turns this picture away and we see a little farm northeast of Mahomet. Looking a little closer we see a girl out feeding the chickens. Why I do believe it is Wanda Ponder! Ah, there comes her husband out of the hog house-- yes, it is none other than Don Elliott. Wanda finally corralled him, after all her efforts to do so when she was a Senior. Wanda keeps busy taking care of her hus- band and her five sons. Also she has won the prize for being the best crocheter in in the county for three years at the the County Fair. Taking care of her family and going out to Mary Lou's house, pretty well fills up Wanda's days. Looking into the silver quartz I find the face of none other than our quiz kid of 1948. Can you guess who it is? Yes, it's Wylma Kelley, known to her friends as Kricket and as yet she is still alone. But in the quartz I can see her ideal man. At present she is employed as the head stenographer in the Lewis Building in St. Louis. As I concentrate on the Crystal's compositae I see that her future husband is a farmer. Wylma always had the ambition to live on the farm, and now it looks like her dreams may come true. Let us leave Wylma and hope that she gets that particular farmer for her husband. The Crystal, throwing off beautiful rays of light, finally clears and we see a mile race taking place at the U. of I. stadium. Guess who is leading, none other than our tallest Senior boy, John Mohr! We see Marilyn sitting on the bleachers cheering like mad for her high school sweetheart. They aren't married yet, but they have plans. H ' Now the Crystal Ball begins to glow as we come to the last picture. We see Millie Siedschlag working like mad in the barn. Millie is also a nurse at the Ma- homet Community Hospital. I imagine this and working at home keeps her quite busy. Bob Mitchell should learn more about the farm, so he could help milk all of those cows. With this picture fading away, I return the Crystal Ball to its place on the shelf until another year rolls around. 21 , Senior Hatchet Ovation Shirley White is so very blond and shy On Perk she surely keeps an eye She's really hog tied him or turned on her charm It now looks like their futre will be on the farm. There's one in the class who's a one guy gal Her nickname is Gracie and Jean is her pal They have one love in common and that is a horse lf there's more than one love it's a secret, of course! Around Bob Warner the girls seldom swarm His great desire now is to wear an army uniform To protect our country is one big' job The one thing we wish is Good Luck to Bob. Larry Gnagey is a versatile musician To have his own band should be his ambition He has a case now, some one just said. But it's not for a baritone, it's love in his head.' The tallest of the class? Why that's John Mohr He's worked on a farm and some in a store The time he's most happy is when he's at the wheel With Luly beside him in his Merry Oldsmobile. Carolyn Yount has a sweet disposition, To become a teacher is not her ambition At doing her typing she'll never shirk In a business office where she'll probably work. Ernie Bailey you just couldn't hate When he comes to school he's most always late I-Ie'd much rather sleep or go to Champaign Or just plain day dream of his future fame. There's one in the class, her last name is Ponder Of a certain tall fellow she couldn't be fonder When it comes to bright sayings she really scores Just ask her the meaning of when it rains it pours. Mary Lou's future? Well can't you guess Someday she wants to be at Station WLS She'd like to do filing in the Music Library you see So she could make some of that Do Re Mi. There's one in the class whose pop is a cop When he gets started at teasing he never will stop He has the prettiest red hair that you've ever seen His last name is Davis, the first name is Jean. He milks the cows and feeds the chickens About a gal called Lois he's crazy as the dickens His first name is Richard and he's a little shy He really is a Byrd but still he can't fly. 22 There's one little gal who really can type, About that one subject. she never will gripe She's Betty Epperson and she is so neat In those typing tests she's sure hard to beat. Jack Moon can't be fenced in by women The other guys can love 'em and win 'em A famous farmer he's much rather be But time will tell, just wait and see. Do you know the guy whose nickname is Toad He sure sends that Chevie right down the road Says he, When I was in grade school I gues I liked most of all to play at recess. Typing, shorthand, English or history She'1l graduate with honors and that's no mystery For her grades have been the highest of the class So Wylma Kelley is sure to pass. Bob Mitchell is no strange creature For wanting some day to be a Latin teacher That's what he really hopes to do His classmates hope his dreams come true. That gal they call Millie is really a clown You can catch her with a laugh but seldom a frown She lives on a farm and can she stear a tractor? Right now Bob Mitchell is her great factor. Lucy Middleton is far from home 'Blut Tub will be with her where 'ere she may r Her favorite food? Sweet potatoes and ham For she's that gal from way South Alabam If it's a dress you need, the one you should know Is Aurettia Gilmore for she really can sew At any assignment she'll never be a faker The prediction is that she'll be a good homemaker. Wanda Paul's dream is to be a farmer's wife. We all think that would be the life. In school time Wanda does her best, Outside of that, we don't know the rest. Jack Jones is a geography lad. He almost drives Mr Harmon mad. In sports he doesn't do much, But he and Phil Teare sure raise the dust. Lester Endsley doesn't like teachers, But we all know he wants to be a preacher, S 08m When it comes to current events, he lgidows all, We wonder for which girl he will som ay fall A girl came to us from Champaign this year Her name is Ruth Myrick and she's always here She loves to take her car and ride With a certain red-head by her side. After registration, we entertained the upperclassmen at an initiation party in the community room. We left this party feeling that maybe high school wasn't going to be so dreadful after all. We elected the following officers: President, Bill Herriottg Vice President, Keith Dawkins, Secretary-Treasurer, Bill Dean, and Stu- dent Council representative, Marilyn Ponder. Patricia Hough, a member of our class moved to Sandwich during the year. In our sophomore year, we gained another member, Jim Jones. This made our total enrollment eighteen. The following officers were elected: President, Marilyn Ponder, Vice President, Jim Jones, Sec- retary-Treasurer, Bill Herriottg Parliamentarian and Student Coun- cil representative, Darlene Manuel. The class, with Mr. Engleking as our sponsor, gave a dance in November. By this time we were well acquainted with high school and were looking forward to our junior and senior year. Now we come to the present year as juniors. Our new mem- bers were Leon Souders, Mac Ribley. Mrs. Inskip, our class spon- sor, presided over our election of class officers. They were: Presi- dent, Bill Herriottg Vice President, Keith Dawkins, Secretary- Treasurer, Maxine Dodd, Student Council representatives, Jim Jones, Colleen Carson, and Marilyn Ponder. On November 7, we presented our class play, Don't Darken My Door . It was an experience that will never be forgotten. Our class ordered its class rings early and received them. On St. Valentines Day, our class gave a Valentine Dance. It was a very successful dance. We presented the annual Junior- Senior Banquet on May 8, at the ,Mahomet Community High School. Although we are looking forward to. our senior year, I am sure our other years will always remain in our memory as some of the happiest years of our life. 27 BILL HERRIOTT KEITH DAWKINS 28 MAXINE DODD BETTY BRYAN BOB SHIRLE5 CCLLEEN CARSON GLEN LINDSEY DA RZENE MANUEL WAYNE PERKINS MARILYN PONDER LEON SOUDERS 29 'Q QQ GLENN MILLER JEANNINE ZINDARS MONTE GAWTHROPE JIM JONES ANN DICKMAN PATRICIA PATTON GLEN COFFIN 30 Junior Class Plaq , U KAY?-fy .-in 4 -1 - .-ra Dont Darkeu Mig Door gg-..:--'-if ' I - .qi 1,1 - .cyl 4, N I .I gf N 4 . at -G sfo -G 'N gj Wm I November 7, 1947 -I VX ' A aff ' ' 51 A ' CAST UF CHARACTERS ROGER KENT, a bac-helol '.., . ,. , , LEON SOUDERS RUSEMARY KENT, his romantic neice PATRICIA PATTON TOM GARRICK, her persistent suitoi' ,, . E. so we are told. That lad Wayne Perkins lives on a farm Augirl in his class is his one charm His dreams of the future are not very funny 'Cause he'd like to work and make lots of money. Keith Dawkins is a great pole vaulter But we think he will end up carrying water To fly with the Birds is his ambition So come on Keith, turn on the ignition. A shark at shorthand is a junior girl, She also gives all the boys a whirl, She studies her lessons, night and day, And Ann Dickman always gets an A. Maxine Dodd is a girl from the farm. We are not sure who will win her charm. Her long wavy hair is her joy and pride But she takes all activities in her stride. The tall girl in the class is Patricia Patton Her favorite subjects are typing and Latin Patricia would like to be an opera star, And at this, she will surely go far. - Leon Souders is a mighty Charles Atlas He jumps around, as if he sat on a cactus When it comes to colors, he prefers red But we know it's all in HER head. Mac Ribley is our newest Junior boy Clarice Siedschlag grabbed him and shouted for joy Now those two are really pals For you see, Mac doesn't like the other gals. Glenn Coffin's nickname is Fat He is always wearing Mr. Harmon's hat. Bookkeeping is about to get him down But don't worry Fat, the end will come around. Another Junior boy is Glenn Miller All the girls think he's really a killer He takes a load to the .Basketball games, Really, Glenn, do you know all their names? 33 Betty Bryan doesn't make much noise, She goes to Weldon for her boys, Betty was an old maid in the Junior play, We wonder if she will be one some day. Glenn Lindsey is the gas station man, He works for Don Gordon whenever he can, When running the mile, he has plenty of speed But when the girls chase him, he's never in the lead. Jeannine Zindars is the quiet type She rides the bus each morning and night. Her favorite car is a Chevrolet, In which she and Warren go riding every day. Bill Herriott is the musician of the class He goes with a little sophomore lass. Bill thinks a piano is just grand On which he plays Etude in Boogie in our band. Next to Bill, we find Jim Jones Just who he'll go with no one knows. He likes farming and all kinds of sports But when it comes to studying, he really snorts. Bob Shirley is the school's athlete He seems to do the best with his feet. In school, Bob is quiet and shy, But he'll get over that, by and by. There is one girl in school that is lonesome no more She sits and talks to a boy named Mohr, When they are together, you can't hear a peep, Except when Marilyn's heart skips a beat. Colleen Carson is a gal after a man She certainly will get him if she can. She would like to be a lavoratory technician, For developing films is her ambition. That lad Wayne Perkins is quite a boy. A senior girl is his pride and joy. His plans for the future are not very funny, Cause he wants to work and make lots of money. 34. In our sophomore year June Pence and Imogene Keller joined our ranks, but at the end of our first semester Scott Woodworth and Phyllis Ryker moved away and Jim Maley dropped out. Mr. Knell was appointed our sponsor and then officers were elected as follows: President, Cecil Dunlapg Vice President, Jim Maleyg Secre- tary-Treasurer, Bob Dale and Student Council representatives were: Cecil Dunlap and Joan Jones. Many of our boys were active in basketball and football, also several members were in band and chorus. In December We had a school dance and invited the alumni and our parents. At the- dance we sold soft drinks. We have sold pop corn at many of the basketball games. In December We also had a party at Mr. and Mrs. Knell's new home. The Sophomore Class pre- sented them with a lovely green lamp for their house. We have enjoyed these two years of our high school life and we are quite sure the next two will be just as happy. 35 CECIL DUNLAP JIM MALEY 36 BOB DALE RUTH BIRD SCOTT WOODWORTH ELAINE GAITHER DON BRANSON JOYCE :B-LANCHARD BOB BARRETT Lols SIEDSCHLAG PHIL TEARE 37 SUE IRLE DICK MALEY DOROTHY KELLER PHYLLIS RYKER JOAN JONES AUDREY CAFIN DAN DAVIS 38 CLARXCE SIEDSCHLAG . ,lf VELDA LIGGETT IMOGENE KELLER Not Pictured JUNE PENCE S 5 REGINA ROBERTS ELLEN CZUBAK 39 FRESHMEN mx, A - TL- Class of 1951 President ......... ........
