As we go back over the textbooks of long ago, we realize that readin', 'ritin', and 'rithmetic were sufiicient for the pot-bellied stove era. Our school, however, must extend its scope to meet the urgent needs of today. Our book shows this new philosophy in action. JOSEPH E. BOYLE Superintendent of Schools ln the training of high school students, of equal importance to a good foundation in the basic subjects is the knowledge of the value of cooperative relationship between parents, teach- ers, and fellow workers. Individual resource- tulness as well as the persons responsibilities cannot be overemphasized. naw! Congratulations to the class of 1959! You have been part of a school that received a Free- dom Foundation medal, a high evaluation rating, the highest publication awards and top ath- letic honors. Responsibility, respect in relationships, and re- sourcefulness must certainly be yours. X 8' i 'L MR. ROBERT T. The modern cry, I.et's get hack to the three R's, prompted the Maroon and Black staff to evalu- ate our aims. Are there too many frills in education? Should we, indeed, get back to the basic courses of former years and exclude many activities? These questions challenged us. That the world has changed is indisputalile. The cracker barrel and horse and buggy era made life simple in relationships. jets today draxv closer the world population. A new con- cept in human relationships is necessary and we feel that our school has met the need for broader courses of study to tit each graduate into the pat- tern of modern living. S Belou Secietaiial duties in the principal s RMU ofhee 'ue executed efiiclentls bs Niiss Patricia daql, ldrmld During january the administration received word from Dr. R. D. Mathews, chairman of the Commission of Secondary Schools of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, giving his oliicial notification that Mahanoy City High School has been approved for continuance on the list of Accredited Second- ary Schools. The Evaluation Committee visited our school for three days and submitted its re- port commending the esprit de corps, the eagerness to present broad extracurricular offer- ings, the levels attained by graduates. These all attest to the success of the school program. If we have frills in education in Mahanoy High, they are necessary for the student and community welfare. Wfe have not ignored the basic classroom studies. Learning these comes first. Wfhat has been added helps to make open- minded, tolerant citizens. That is our aim. John Pilconis, conis. assisted by James Rhoades, Marie Mokal, Delia Marlow. Clie - An increasing number of powers is being given to the Students' Congress as their govern- ing body becomes more self-sudicient. Great confidence is placed in this body because the members have proved their fair-mindedness and functioning ability in so many instances. The Congress is composed of two houses- the Senate and the House of Representatives. Representatives to the House are elected by the student body in September. ln January the Senators are chosen. This system is used in order to insure members with experience in the Congress every month of the year. .john Pilconis served as president this year. Responsible projects have been carried out to successful completion this year. The Mahanoy City March of Dimes collection is of major importance. lt is a rare instance where a community project is handled by a unit of the Below: Representatives lstanding. left to righti John Dugan. This was organized, actual can- vas was made, and receipts tallied capably. Care paclqages were sent to the needy. The con- gress does many very humane things. Serving as monitors in the hall, discussing school problems and helping to formulate school policy are all on the agenda. Each post in the hall is a respected area where faculty and students recognize the Congress member as one invested with authority. These pupils have earned this right. Care is taken to elect to Stu- dents' Congress only those students who have proved worthy to be representatives of school ideals. Miss Wfinifred O'Donnell has done a line job as adviser. Mrs. Stanley Mahalick prepares the juniors for participation in later years. Both advisers have achieved a form of student govern- ment as effective as any in the country. Bashful Indian maidens performed authentic war dances and rituals, while Indian chiefs and medicine men looked on. Matt Diblin and his fair-haired friend, Kitty, handled all legal af- fairs. A board of directors representing each local civic organization and two oilicers of the Stu-- dents Congress meet monthly to discuss the operations of the Teen Canteen. Because of the keen interest of these responsible adults and students, the Canteen has functioned very well for the past nine years. Interested groups from many Eastern states have sent representatives to study the local setup and pattern their recrea- tional program along similar lines. The games challenge those who enjoy a fast game of table tennis, a relaxing game of check- ers or cards or other thought-provolting games according to the season. The dart board has many signers, too. Billiards is the most popular attraction. Television is placed on the game floor in an alcove furnished with comfortable leather sofa and chairs. On the mezzanine, dancing to a juke box draws many. The younger teenagers usually learn to dance in this informal setting. The XXfoman's Club sponsors live music dances several times during the year---formal and in- formal. Serious juvenile problems have been averted, according to local police, because the towns- people have been willing to establish a spot where young people can enjoy an evening of clean, wholesome fun under the supervision of two teachers at all times.
