It is a far cry, in- deed, from the Pine Tree flag or the Rattle- snake flag to Old Glory waving high today. Long before there was any thought of be- coming a United States, the colonies wanted an emblem In New England, as early as 1737 a flag made its appearance It was a blue flag with a red cross quartering a white union Red, white, and blue In the Revolutionary period of our his tory, innumerable types of flags appeared The Pine Tree flag is probably the most famous of these emblems The Southern colonies often used flags with the word Llberlj in letters Another flag had he device of a rattlesnake with the words, D ll tfread on me Many of the flags were the same as the British flag differing only in color It was necessary for our Navy, however, to have a standard banner A committee was appointed with Benjamin Franklin as chair man The flag which they designed was known as the Grand Union flag It had for its union the crosses of St George and St Andrew and thirteen alternate red and white stripes representing the colonies The crosses showed that British sentiment was still high in the colonies George Washington raised it on land at Cambridge anuary 1 1776 It was first flown at sea on ohn Paul ones flagship Alfred, December 3 177 Not until a year after the war was de clared were the crosses discarded The Con date celebrated as Flag Day passed the fol lowing resolution, which created the Stars and Stripes RISOINIII That tht flag it tht rhirtttn unirtd starts bt thirt n strip s .alt rnatt r l and whit that tht unitn bt thirteen stars hit or .1 u ht r pr s nting a n w ton ttllation This flag first appeared in the battle of Saratoga, September 11 1777 Contrary to popular belief, many historians do not give Betsy Ross credit for making this flag, al- though she did make many flags for the colonial troops. The flag was changed to its present form in 1818, when five new states had already been admitted to the Union. It was seen that if a star and a stripe were added for every new state the flag would become un wieldy and unsymmetrical A new flag appeared in every war which the United States fought In the Revolu tionary war the flag contained thirteen stars in 1 blue field arranged in a circle and thir teen alternate red and white stripes At the time of the war of 1812 there were fifteen stars and fifteen stripes in the flag When the Mexican war was fought the flag had already been changed to the original stripes but there were now twenty nine stars in the Union President Lincoln allowed the stars repre sentmg the seceded states to remain in the flag There were thirty four warring states in the Union during the Civil War Forty five of the forty eight states had pomed the Union when the Spanish Amer: can war took place The Hnal state, Arizona, joined the Union in 1912 Delaware was the first state to ratify the Constitution, therefore, the first star in the upper left hand corner has been designated to represent that state The others follow in the order of ratification Nliny different mottots hue been attributed to the colors of tht flag Ont of the most popular is XX lute-Purity mnotence Rtd Hardintss Ind valor Blue-Vlgilantt ptrsutrant and jusutc lirst 'Adopt d by Continental Longrtss Iunt 14 1777 Iirst flown from ohn Paul ones ship Ranger uly 14 1777 I-irst th un in 11nd at batrlt of Saratiwga Stpttmber ll 1777 Iirst off' nal salutt paid to flag, bw forugn tountrx Fran t february 14 1778 lirst nam gn n Old Glory during Cnxl War Huis off' Along fb: sfreef fbc rf' comes A blarv 0 bugflzs, u ru e 0 drums, A mb 0 zolor fillllllflj lbc sftg Huis off' Tb: Flag ls passmg 113 iwk , . t . re - ,JJ L' t ' i rr 0 J .21 - ' ' 9 ' ' A J J a ' ' J ' ' , , 5. - . . - -. . . - Iv- -1, A . urn I fc ' 'Q . tincntal Congress, on June 14, the A fcw huts in the history of the flag in brief are: 5' 1 C ' ' ' y -g ' B . , . . . . , .. Snyder, was greeted with bad fortune immediately after it had been selected- what event to have as a theme for the book? No World Fairs or Inter- national Expositions to use this year. Finally, after much discussion, the staff hit upon the idea of expressing our gratitude for being peaceful American citizens instead of taking part in that melee over theref, Good idea--so, our American Flag Edition. The work really began. Articles and write-ups to be composed, snap- shots to be taken, ads to be gotten. Fortunately, the editorial work was covered easily since many of the staff also wrote for our student paper, The Nugget. Too, much credit must be given to all our students who so ably assisted by being photo- graphed early and by having their cuts in before press time. Then came our business staff who, although at the time of their appointment were new at this work helped a great deal in overcoming Hnanclal problems, which crop up ever so often in this work Finally, our art staff who, as you can readily see by the illustrations in this book, really did marvelous work TYPISTS BUSINI SS STAH' At last, all material was compiled and sent to our engraxer After our copy material printed Then, after it was beautifully coxered, we produced that which we intend to use in time to come as a reminder of our dear old high school days our YhARB-ook imkc 5 7 engraving work was completed, the book was sent to the printer to have THE UGGET XS GOOD AS C OLD Tlme' Marches On' 1938 NUQGET wlns second place In state con test' 1939 40 NUGGLT recelves second award III P S P A contest Indlvxdual Wrlters Wm pr1Les' THL NUGGFT Mlrches On' fach year THe NUGGI T has become a better newspaper, and thus term It has been even more successful and mterestmg One of the reasons fox thls IS the Senlor Nugget pe11od Instead of taknng Senlor Enghsh the members of the staff have a fuII perxod each day In whxch to do all NUG GET Work and get the paper ready for pubhcatxon Th1s has been one of the Important factors In elevatnng THE NUe,GhT to IES present hlgh standmg In prevlous years staff members recelved no scholastlc credlt for the effort they put forth However, due to the efforts of Mlss Stella Hlnch semor and IUIIIOI Enghsh teachel, students on the staff reeene grades judged by the merlt of thelr work on eleh Issue Th1s fact w1II serve as ln IIICLIIIIVC to future staff members, to put TH1 NUe,e,1 I 111 the hnghest ranks of h1,e,h school papers TI-Ik INUGGILT STAFF 1939 40 I IJITOR IN CHII F XIAN -XQINQ I IJITOR XX ILLIAXI I'-XXQOXIS IIATURI IIJIIOR XSSSIANI II XILKI IX I'I IL DURAN SI PXRIXI X IOSI I II XX XI'I RLS ISUSINI S5 XIANALII R ll AN XX I NTL ROSI XX XIIX ROSI IRIAXI XIII DRI IJ LRI3 XX XIIXRX SUPI RN XX XCJI SPOR I S IDI TOIXS SII PIII N CJAX UI A I RANLLS i AX UI A XIARI XX XX IIITC OXII3 X OINIIII IUNIIII IDI HR X XIAR III X 4 XXX IXOXSIXX QIAI XXRII SI XSSISI AY IS I Yl'IS I S iii? Certainly, to any sportsman in America. But Who's behind all this tumultous shouting and frantic yelling? Some say the contesting teams playing be- fore the fan True, but then, who are the brains behind these teams-of course, their coaches To these coaches, then, the unsung heroes of the athletic World, in keeping with the democratic spirit of our annual, we dedi cate this, our athletic section In the case of M C H S it happens that these heroes are Messrs ohn L Goepfert and Alex A Kilkuskie These men have wholeheartedly devoted their time and labor to teaching the youth of our school the ideals of the typical Ameri can boy Not who won the game mattered so much in their minds as game after game their proteges trotted onto athletic fields and courts, but whether each player played as he should fair, clean, and sportsmanlike, which is true Americanism in its highest degree Too, keeping strictly to the meaning of the Word democratic, these men offered to train not only eleven or five men, but offered their services to all, in perhaps the most extensive intramural program in our state. No boy in our school could, nor ever did, complain about not receiving a fair chance under this ull embracing system, so, in a splendid fashion this pair have really exemplified our national democracy inso much as every person under their tutelage was given an equal share of attentlorl Then, in the teamwork demonstrated by Maroon teams coached by this duo, one can plainly see how they have imprinted in each boy s heart the true meaning of that demo cratic slogan Cne for all, and all for one Fmallv, in summing up this, We Wish in this small way to pay tribute to our coaches, who teach our boys not how to aim best for a sure victory, not how to shoulder a heavy bayonetted rifle, not how to march the goose step, but how to participate, now, in clean, fair, honest athletics which will develop them into clean, fair, and honest citizens so as to carry forth in the future the great democratic spirit of true Americans Verily they are Moulders 0 MKII Nutt Intludul in the xrophits displaxt in NI Cstpt rts pitturt on his twentieth IIYIIXLISIFS I tm lthlni., lrt 5 World s Lhamiionslips ltionll C han1pionhips 5 5 1 L IIIHTIUIISIIIIS 1 J IIPIOII llll, S U I I1.lI1'l HUIIS I R FU IX U L I 'I 13W l' I S IL Ll I' LX I U5 S III IU ITILIIU I' 5 L l Ill II1 LN IDL lll III S W II li itltm ta L C rep tri Ji109,.2Q , t V S . 'I ' ' ' ' ' ' TAMAQUA - MAHANOY CITY Coaches Kilkuskie and Lutkauskas were faced with the problem of placing a Maroon team on the field, as practically every varsity man had adhesive tape and gauze holding him together. Ray Truskowski, a freshman fullback of some ability, who constantly kept the Maroon and Iilack in the game, was iniured late in the game to such an extent as to keep him out of action for the season. Tamaqua took advantage of the Mahanoy yearlings, who played most of the game, and emerged victorious, 27-0. Bob Vforden, varsity lineman, sustained an iniury in the game, which, although not considered serious at the time, was found later, at a practice session, to be serious enough to keep Bob on crutches for the remaining games. SHAMOKIN - MAHANOY CITY Mahanoy Iligh, in its annual non-conference game with Shamokin, held the Greyhounds to a scoreless tie. The contest was played on a soggy field, with fumbles on the part of both teams ending several scoring threats. The Maroon line held Shamokin on the two- and one-yard lines, respectively, to prove that Niahanoy was in there scrap- ping. FRACKVIIII-I - M,-XIJANOY CITY Mahanoy broke into the win column for the first time this season when an aerial attack proved the margin of victory over Frackville by a score of 22-0. Co-Captain Schuster, in less than two minutes after the kickoff, broke through the Red and Blue line to block a kick, ss-hieh rolled behind the end 7onc. to give Mahanoy an auto- matic safety. Schuster, Stan Kilkuskie and Shelakes paced the Maroon scoring as Kilkuskie tossed each touchdown pass. Mart Hanrahan and Charlie Iiedorchack, in the line, played a bang-up game as they recovered several fumbles and their tackling was something to remember. NIAHANOY CQITY IIIGH SCHOOL-SHI-INANDOAH On Armistice Day, November II, I959, the Praying Miners traveled to Shenandoah to meet Bobby NorIt's strong Blue Devil outfit. Early in the game the Shens recovered a Nlnroon fumble deep in Maroon territory and converted it into a touchdown. The Maroon warriors then held their own unllinehingly. but Finally superior weight and power told and the Blue Devils rolled up an impressive 32-0 score. NIAHANOY CITY IIIGH SCIHOOI.-COAL TOWNSHIP On I'riday night, November I7, Xlahanoy High once again invaded foreign soil to tussle the Purple Demons of Coach XVaIt Nlarshall. The Demons started orl fast and midway through the wee- ond period held a I9-0 adxantage over the hapless Miners. Ilut soon the tide elianged and Maroon marelies turned into Nlaroon seores and a final last-ditch spurt made by the Demons was neeessary to save them from defeat as they linally emerged Victorious, 26-I4. NIAHANOY CITY HIGH SCHOOL-ASHLAND On Thanltsgiving Day, November 23, 1939, the Blaelt Dia- monds of Ashland High, engaged the I rayini.g Miners at the Nlahanoy Township Stadium in the final of the l939 grid season. The Nliners, using practically an entire ditlerent team than that whieh began the season, broke loose early and by half-time held a eomforatble 25-0 lead. During the entire second half Coaeh Killtusltie used recruits whom he figured would see action next year-the result being the game ended with the identical half-time seore, 2540. So rang down the curtain on our I939 season-11 season not so sueeessful in wins and losses!-but a season wliieli displayed real Nlahanoy eourage even in the faee of bitter defeat. illflk BASKETBALL RESUME OF GAMES THE Maroon and Black of Coach Johnny L Goepfert opened another basketball season when they defeated Mount Carmel 42 29 The Maroon J V s opened the1r season w1th a VICCOFY over Mount Carmel Town shlp 26 20 The Grange and Black of Coaldale was next to fall 1n the defeated opponent class when the Maroon bowled them over 43 10 The Mahanoy C1ty Jun1ors also opened the1r home season w1th a v1ctory over Coal dale 22 18 Coal Townsh1p H1gh who played CWICC 1n a week as exh1b1t1on games fell by the ways1de w1th Mahanoy v1ctor1ous 44 27 and 45 18 Fo11ow1ng the footsteps of the1r brethren theJ V swon 4513 Agalnst our arch r1va1 Shenandoah the Goepfert qu1ntet rode to v1ctory 58 20 For the fifth consecut1ve v1ctory the V s defeated the Shenandoah un1ors 55 15 Mauch Chunk was the next league oppo nent to w1tness that Mahanoy was off to tht fa1r w1th the Maroon aga1n h1tt1ng f1fty po1nts as they emerged the v1ctor 50 18 The Maroon Jun1ors kept 1n P0156 Wlth the XVHFSIICY w1th a v1ctory over Mauch Chunk 47 25 Blythe Townsh1p next 1n 11ne to taste the Maroon fury was snowed under 62 12 The MIHCFS defeated Blythe TOWDShlp for the1r seventh v1ctory by a score 38 14 ohnny Goepferts vars1ty five rang up IIS b1ggest score of the season when they dumped Summ1t H111 70 22 The Maroon and Black J V s stepped one game closer to the champ1onsh1p 1n defeat mg Summ1t H111 45 20 Lansford proved the Maroons toughest obstacle to the first half crown when the Maroon was extended to take a 40 to 32 v1ctory TheJ V s downed Lansford 37 21 Nesquehonmg was the last opponent of the first half schedule Wlth the Maroon tak si 115 1ng the VICIOFY 59 29 and also the FIFSI Half Champ1onsh1p In defeat1ng Nesquehomng the Mahanoy C1ty H1gh School J V s won the first half chan1p1onsh1p of the Black D1amond League 2 15 Tamaqua of the East Penn League 1n an txh1b1t1on game fell 1n 11ne w1th the rest of the Maroon opponents when they too saw that John L s proteges were off for b1gger games Score 44 23 Tamaqua J V s were swamped by the un1or VHFSIIY 37 18 Coldale opened the second half league schedule and succumbed 60 24 Coaldale was aga1n dumped by the Sec ond Strmgers 43 15 Shenandoah s Blue Dev11s on the1r own court proved real hot and a hect1c bat tle ensued but the Pray1ng M1ners came through 55 31 The Jun1or VHFSIIY swamped Shenan doah 43 16 Mauch Chunk for the second consecu t1me tlme fell before the Maroon quest Mauch Chunk marked the fourteenth COHSCCUCIVC VICIOIY for the J V s 44 20 Blythe Townsh1p also fell the second t1me as the Mahanoy courtsters emerged on the long end of the score 38 14 Once agam the J V s bolted Blythe TOWHSh1P 47 21 Coach J L Goepfert s Maroon and Black basketeers t1ed one of the canny mentors records when they defeated Summ1t H111 for the1r s1xteenth consecut1ve VICCOFY 60 35 Mahanoy s ay Vee squad handed another defeat to Summ1t H111 32 28 W1th the Maroons 46 22 VICCOFY over Lansford Mahanoy pract1ca11y clmched the t1t1e as the1r nearest opponent had fallen by the vs 3YSldC IWICC The Maroon seconds defeated Lansford The Praymg 'Vhners engaged 1n an ex h1b1t1on t11t w1th Mount Carmel Townsh1p and emerged v1ctor1ous 60 46 Mahanoy k 1 1 . . . . 0 . . , . . 1 ' ' , 7 ' 3 . . - .
