So in order to acquaint the students with its history we will give a brief account of its growth. In 1864, in the Spruce Street building the first high school, consisting of one room, originated. Because of the more central posi- tion of the Pine street building, the high school was transferred to the said building. In 1872, a three-story building was then built on the present site on Centre street. Here it remained until 1880 when it was moved back to the Pine Street building. Presently, it was found that the building was unfit for educational purposes and was torn down. During the period of construction, the Armory Hall was used as a school building. The Pine Street building was finished in 1885 and the high school was situated there until 1898. At this time, an annex fthe present junior high school buildingj , was added to the Centre Street building, which provided better facili- ties for education than the Pine Street building. Up to 1914, this was used as the high school. It was in the same year that the present high school was built. This building, built on a much larger scale, accommo- dated the increasing population and offered better opportunities to its students. . L, ,, .s - . ,- .., .-..
