Hot Lunch For the second year, the hot lunches were served and prepared in the rooms that were fixed a year ago for that purpose. A few new conven- iences were added, such as a 10-cup automatic electric percolator and brown sectional plates. Also, an extra refrigerator was installed so that the milk could be kept cool and fresh. The cooks, Gertie Mahoney and Florence Steffan, were back on the job this year. Gertie has cooked here for 9 years, and Florence for 10. The lunch program was supervised by Mrs. Mather and Mr. Echtenkamp. The cooks served approximately 150 meals a day. Ten students helped with this big task by washing dish- es, serving, and cleaning. This was Orma Herman's second year as lunch ticket salesman. The cost of the tickets was 61.25 for 5 meals, which covered the cost of running the lunch program. 1 The milk program, sponsored by the government, was a huge success for the second consecutive year. The students paid ld for each extra half-pint of milk, either white or chocolate. A break at 2:30 for both teachers and students encouraged milk consumption. fl--- Ilf-1.-,,, First and Second Grades of 19hh-M5 Row l - Gary Knauss, Clara Rhoten, Ronald Lough, Orma Herman, Gregory Bice, Mari- lyn Benson, Amogene Thompson, Karen Landhuis, Larry Meeker. 2 - Monte Brinker, Marilyn Stirtz, James Magnette, Eunice Adams, David Aronson, Merle Meeker, Roger Keast, Katherine Arbaugh. 3 - Dennis Forde, Ardith Girton, Virginia Arbaugh, Lorene Buffum, John Lamberson, Sondra Mether, Angela Reardon, Mrs. Gilkerson. Twelve years ago seventeen small youngsters walked through the doors and up the stairs to begin their long journey of education under the guidance of Mrs. Gilkerson. While they were starting at Magnolia, not far away in a little country school, five other children were also beginning their educationg neither group knowing that some day their paths would cross, and that they would event- ually graduate together. The class at Magnolia gained and lost a few as the years progressed. During their fourth year they gained Wallis, Robert, Glen, Janice, and Jackieg and Harold joined them in the sixth grade. Thus they went through Junior High. In the spring of their eighth year they presented the play uHands Upn which proved to be quite a bit of fung their junior high basketball teams looked good and showed promising material for high school. The class was joined by Jack and Francis as they entered the freshman year. This increased the number to fifteen wide-eyed and ready classmates. Although they feared initiation, it proved to be more fun for them than for the Seniors. All the class participated in many activities such as music, publications, and declamg and they were honored to have Wallis on the first team of baseball and basketball. The class diminished .to fourteen as sophomores but continued to compete favorably with other classes in activities. Marilyn B. and Orma were continuing to show great promise in declam. In 195A the class decreased to twelve juniors, but they were mighty. In the fall they produced nIt's a Great L1fe.N Then came the planning of the Junior- Senior Banquet-Prom, nStarlight and Roses.n It was rumored to be one of the prettier banquets in the school's history. The senior class of 1956 are proud to have Jack as MAHIWI president, and Jackie as MAHILA and Student Council president. The class also provides five girls on the first team of basketball and the student manager, while five of the boys participate in athletics. Declam, music, library, and the newspaper staff also claim several of the Seniors. Only four of the original seventeen remain-- Sondra, Marilyn B., Marilyn S., and Orma. These six boys and six girls in May, 1956, graduated and stepped out into the world on their own. They have had many good times in school and can be proud of the records they are leaving behind. 26
