We have chosen Memories as the theme because we hope fond recollections will flood your mind as you look through the pages. Much work and worry, and also fun, have gone into the making of this annual. We hope you will like the new features of the book. And now, We, the Editors, present to you-L-1 The brinqing You !fTlf0Jlfi!Af of 1955 TO OUR PARENTS - We dedicate our yearbook. To you, our parents, we offer this record of our hopes, dreams, and accomplishments. We hope you will keep this record on the marquee of your minds, for all of it, each tin art, each erfect whole is ours. You, our directors and roducers, deserve to Y Y P P billing. When we didn't quite know our lines, or were missing some of our props, you provided them. You wrote the script, we merely acted our parts and we hope it pleases you. You kept us from covering our tiny imperfections with an excess of grease paint. You showed us how to revise the scene, to make it fit for production. You were in the center of the stage, then as now, and you were in the wings cheer- ing us on, making us stars, and for this moment we want you to take the spotlight and accept our undying thanks and gratitude. 4 EEE: NEW www M N 5l'f'! March 7, 1955 To the Students: Public schools are based on the belief that everyone must be given an opportunity to develop to their highest capabilities underthe circumstances. The Magnolia Schools are striving to offer opportunities for students to receive formal training in fundamental courses of study and provide situations where students may grow in leadership, faith and a knowledge of their responsibilities. Confidence, ambition, self-respect, respect for others, and for law are essentials for a free nation. Democracy demands that one must learn to discipline oneself and retain right thinking and attitudes under trying and difficult situations. If our school has helped you develop any qualities which will cause you to have a more satisfying and better life, we consider our efforts well spent. Your success now and as future citizens is my sincere wish for you. Sincerely, KWWL MAGNOLIA PUBLIC SCHOOLS MAGNOLIA, ARKANSAS The Magnolia High School faculty members are aware of the fact that our students and our community are eager to have a high degree of learning in our schools. Our school program is rich in extra-curricular activities. Our students are well behaved and their learning achievements compare favorably with those in the best schools in the southwest. We have one of the highest percentages of attendance of any school in our state and we have a low rate of failures and drop outs. Our faculty members are in a continuous process of improving the Magnolia High School. Some day we hope to provide the maximum learning opportunities and a complete student activity program for every high school student in the district. We want to take this opportunity to thank every student and parent for the wonderful cooperation that we have received in our school program during this and in previous years. Sincerely, add Q Jack Clemens, Principal MAGNOLIA HIGH SCHOOL JClds 9 l Cal Partee C. M. This year we have pictured these men in their places of business to give you some idea of their work. C. Z. Couch, President of the Board, is pictured at his desk at the City Hospital where he is business manager. The Vice-President, Dr. Joe F. Ruston, is pictured at his clinic. C. M. Well, that's exactly what happened to Bill Jackson, when Angela Warren and he tried to collect 350,000 from her uncle. This is only one of the hilarious episodes in this comedy. Giggly Miss Finkledink, hateful Miss Holt, and hard-to-please Mr. Dod- son, are only a few of the characters that keep this play funny to the end, and the audience rolling in the aisles. Row one: B. Be- sides these things, they learn to keep house by cleaning up the living room and kitchen in their cottage. A student may take Agriculture for four years under the direction of MR. DODSON. In these classes, he is taught how to grow crops and raise stock. Many of the students have won prizes from their animals. He is also taught carpentering where the students build different objects for the school. MRS. ARTHUR'S American History classes have a film once a week that helps them in the studying of their text books. They also clip articles out of the newspapers each week that relate to history. MISS POTTS' Algebra classes are studying all about fractions and radicals. They learn to work difficult problems by using a formula and substituting into it to form an equation by which they obtain the answer. Senior Science, under the direction of MR. BOWLING, is a course that teaches you more about good health. This class has been studying about what happens to the food in your body. This is one of MRS. MORGAN'S Bi- ology classes. This year, they have been studying parts of the body, plants, and all about insects. In the studying of insects, each student dissects one to find the different parts. If you want to find some information or just a book to read for pleasure, our Library, under the supervision of MRS. HARTLEY, is the place to go. There are several girls that work in it each period to help you check books in and out and find material. It is kept very quiet so you may read magazines, news- papers, or books found in the library. These seniors in Senior English, taught by MRS. MCLEAN, have just finished writing essays on the subject How to Preserve American Freedom. Senior English is very helpful to stu- dents that are preparing for college or jobs. The Study Hall, under the direction of MR. KENNEDY, has grown into one of the best places to study in the whole school and although each Study Hall period is very large it is one of the quietest rooms in MHS. One of MISS CANNON'S Spanish classes are shown studying, in Spanish, the map of South America. During the year, they have learned the fundamental principles of the Spanish language. Journalism Class, under the direction of MRS. DUGAL, is perhaps the busJ iest class in school. The class edits the school newspaper and annual and spon- sors The Varieties night. There is always someone working on one of these projects. MISS LEWIS' English classes, be- sides studying the fundamentals of English grammar are learning to make speeches also. Part of the nine weeks they spend studying literature. Jfmf, Jew dd!!! f:Z.Z'.0fZ.Joz,Ae,gf4,Q ,Df!QQZ'2'mf,7 owejimdwmd Y ,M1 g an J if X E NV AM QW, Wu? Vrkr X' xv vi : fu . ? Elected by the Student Body, these six girls never wavered in their pep and undying loyalty for their teams throughout the seasons. I Tappy served her fourth year as cheerleader for M. H. S. and Saradel and Bertye served two years on the cheerleading squad. Bette, Betts, and Glynda served their first year. To be a cheerleader is a great honor, but there is also a good deal of work attached to it. These girls were responsible for the decorated goal posts and the blocked off areas at every home game. They were on the sidelines at every football game rooting for our football squadg and during basketball season their pep never died. The Cub line averaged 136 pounds per man and the backfield 135 pounds each. The Cubs used 2 offensive formations, the split T of the Panthers and the short punt. Passing was the chief threat of the Cubs who had to take to the airways against teams which were far larger in size in all except 2 games. Passing accounted for 7 of the 8 touchdowns scored by the Cubs. Ninth grade boys on the team were: Ends, Hen- ard, Andrews, Wingfield, Wilson, Cassidy, Green, Prince and Johnson. The basketball season was a very successful one for the Magnolia High School Pan- therettes this year. The girls contributed another trophy to the school by winning the annual Christmas Holiday Tournament. The Pantherette squad has five senior girls who are playing their last games on a high school team. Coach Chick Austin put out one of the best teams in Panther basketball history. His squad had the ability and the team spirit that it takes to make an outstanding team. Early in the season they fought their Way into the finals of the Christmas Tourna- ment, won the first Southern State College Tournament, copped the district tournament, and were defeated in their second game of the state tournament by North Little Rock, a pre-tourney favorite. These boys set a new scoring record when they reached lOl points, but they could not be content with this and scored 105 points in a later outing. They lost games and they won games, but as a whole, we couldn't have asked to be represented by a better group of boys. The B team under Coach Ralph Ross had a good season. Although they lost sev- eral games, they gained much in experience. The team was composed of sophomores and juniors who had the desire to play but lacked experience enough for the A team. 109 I if 5 1 5 32 9 f 2 3 f Q 2 KE 5, S 4 Q, Q - .1 ,- vw- g f., ., x, vw-- W wa 2 , L. In the District Tournament Franklin won the Going to the State Tournament, Franklin lost in the finals in his bid for the singles title, but he and Setliff again teamed to win the doubles trophy. GOLF Left to Right: Poochie Baker, james Gill, and David Blakely. Spring comes and out comes the golf clubs. Golf becomes one of the most popular sports at this time of the year and many people can be seen chasing the ball over the course. MHS is no exception.
