The foundation of knowledge was laid at the beginning of the year and slowly, throughout the year, was built upon layer by layer. Many memories have been created by the people of Magnolia. A senior has memories that are happy yet poignant, while a seventh grader looks forward in anticipation for the happy times yet to come. The time has gone by so quickly, yet there are many memories you will cherish forever. We have tried to capture these treasured memories and reflect them in our annual. The major reason for these high hopes was the return of 13 lettermen. The season began slowly as the team lost its first four games. Then in the middle of the season, the Bulldogs came around and won three of four games before losing to Chandler, a state playoff team. The Magnolia football team graduated seven seniors; and there were also twelve underclassmen on the team. The Bulldogs tied for fifth place in the Southern Star Conference. They had three players named to the All-Conference Team. These three were Todd Christensen for the second consecutive years, and also Tom and Mike Klein for the first time. Even though the season didn’t go as well as planned, the school was still proud. James always gets his man!!! 9 Cheerleaders (top; left to right) Monica Vande Velde, Connie Klein, Vikki Behr, Cindy Clark, Donna Cauwels Rah, Rah, Rah! Football season began and the cheerleaders met the season head-on with alot of enthusiasm. Signs, pep fests, and practice take hours of work and this year the cheerleaders came through with their own brand of spirit! It was a season to remember and the cheerleaders wish to thank everyone for their support. 10 Varsity Volleyball Top: Donna Connie do the RUMP. Middle: Pam says a silent prayer. ANOTHER VOLLEYBALL SEASON” rf'he balls are put away, it’s the end of another season, We won a few, we lost a few, but for that there is no reason. We had a very good coach, she was always by our sides, Whether to give us each a compliment, or to even criticize. She always showed us new things, and these we had to learn. She managed for us to have fun, but yet she's always stern. If we would miss our serve, and then we’d miss a bump, We’d try not to worry, or else we’d get into a slump. If'at first you don’t succeed, try another sport! Come on ball. . where are you?!?! Sue attempts a spike, while Kari and Terri look on. We’d have like to won more games, but we always tried our best, But as Districts came along, we knew it’d be the test; We ended up playing Fulda, but we lost two games in a row, We all went home saddened.. we had suffered quite a blow. Sure, volleyball was over but really We had WON, When we think of all the memories, and we think of all the fun! I would like to say “Thank-you” for all the fun times we’ve shared, It’s nice to have friends, who have always showed they cared! The games have all been played, so I guess the end is here, But 1 will look back with happiness, on this fun-filled year; I’ll remember all the good times, and cherish them in my heart, Because Volleyball 1980.. has been fun, right from the very start! There was a fanfare of excitement and high spirits which tried to spur the team on to a victory against the Adrian Dragons. Recognition of the parents, a picket sign parade, a half-time skit, and an after-the-game reception all contributed to the thrill of victory! Everyone felt exhilarated after Magnolia beat Adrian 74-66. It was definately a night everyone will remember. Here she comes Miss America. What a mess!! More homework! Boy, it smells in here! The basketball players worked extremely hard for the new coach and were in every ball game. They were rewarded with a respectable record and a good feeling about themselves and their season. Because Magnolia has always been the smallest school with the least number of players, does not mean they had the least ability by any means. The Magnolia Bulldogs boys basketball team this year was not second rate with anyone they played. They played hard, smart, and proud. It was refreshing to see a group of young athletes excel in America’s most popular sport. Mike Cox ALL-CONFERENCE PLAYERS - D.J. Cross, Tom Klein, and Todd Christensen. It’d prove to be an exciting year for many different reasons. We were lacking the number of players. And we weren’t very tall, But Kollmann said we had potential, we’d be good in basketball. Our first game we played Chandler, and we knew this meant a lot. It’d determine whether the Bulldogs would be really good or not. We had to win the game to prove that we’d be great, But this was not to be, because we lost the game by eight. The next week we met Edgerton in a triple-header game. The boys played after us, so a lot of people came. Our fans cheered us on, and we gained a Victory, But Kollmann said “tremendous defense” was the girls main key. The following week we were home against a team we’d never met; They were the Round Lake T-Birds, so we had to play our best. They were a very quick team, so we really had to run; But when the game was finally over . . . Magnolia had won! Next came Ellsworth, and we thought that they’d be tough. So we practiced hard all week, but that wasn’t quite enough. Our shooting was the problem so the points were very few. We lost the game by thirteen, and we moved to 2 and 2. The game against Jasper is one game we won’t forget; It was the highlight of our season because we all played our best. We knew we could beat anybody if we played like we did that night. It gave us all confidence . . . our goals were now in sight! We took a break for Christmas, which we really shouldn’t have done. We all got out of shape, and then we really had to run; But Kollmann had us ready so when Adrian came along, We won our fourth game. We were finally getting strong. But then the problems started when our shooting went so low. We fell into a slump, and we lost three games in a row. Kollmann was disappointed, but he said we’d start anew. After losing those easy games, he didn’t know what to do. Well Adrian came along, and we knew they’d want this game. They hadn’t won all season, so they were ready when they came. We needed to gain our confidence to bring us back alive. Our determination won the game for us, and we moved to 5 and 5. The next game was at Hills, and we knew that we could win. It was a matter of working together and playing like a team again. They’d beaten us once before, but we knew they could be stopped. But when the game had finally ended . . . Hills was up on top. The following week we had two games on Thursday and Friday night; We knew that they were toughies so we really had to fight. Our shooting was still the problem, and we lost two in a row. We all went home saddened; we had suffered quite a blow. Next came Edgerton, and we knew they weren’t that tough. But with the problems we’d been having, we knew it could be rough. It was close all the way, but when the game was finally done; We had pulled out quite a squeaker . . . we had won the game by one! Our season was almost over, but there was one game left to play. We lost to the Fulda Raiders in a game which was away. We were somewhat disappointed with our season overall. We knew we had potential; we should’ve done better in basketball. We would’ve liked to won more games, but we always tried our best; But as Districts came along we were put to the test. After leading for three quarters; it looked like we would win. But when the final buzzer rang ... we had lost to Hills again. When we lost in Districts that night, it ended Magnolia’s years. That was very hard to accept, and we shed a lot of tears. But Kollmann had warm words of kindness to extend, And it was then that we realized we were losing quite a Friend! Kollmann always seemed to care about the things we’d try to do. You could turn to him with problems, and he’d always help you through. You’re a Special Coach, Kollmann, and we’ll miss you when you’re gone. But we’ll always cherish the memories which are very, very fond! The season started with an invitational tournament at Pipestone, followed by Luverne, Fulda, Walnut Grove, Tri-County at Magnolia, finally ending with Worthington. Then the nerve-racking but exciting elimination began with Sub-Districts at Luverne. Five of the lucky members, Pam, Kyle, Ryan, Jimmy, Kari advanced to District competition at Fulda. Of the five competitors, Pam advanced to Regional competition which was also held at Fulda. On the whole, Mr. Benson was proud of the team’s efforts as they managed to make the 1981 Declam season a most memorable and happy one. To some it brings a happy smile, to others it brings a tear. Your high school days are over soon and the big world now awaits you. Strive to achieve your goals in life and make your dreams come true. Remember the important moments in life and continue to reach for the top. Always accept the hardships you face and never ever stop. Follow your dreams, Seniors, but take one step at a time. Never look back on the mistakes you’ve made, just always continue to climb. Tonight will be a memory that is cherished with your friends. The happiness of your high school days are never going to end. We’ll miss you very deeply and we hate to see you leave, But the big world now awaits awaits you, you goals you must achieve. mmm Connie Klein Foolin’ Around We bad, we bad Wasting time in study hall. “That’s the silliest thing I’ve ever heard! yy Mr. Shapley introduces the graduates. He has walked it every day From September until May. But this time he walks it slow ’Cuz he’s got no where else to go ... And his thoughts begin to drift To a time - a carefree day When he used to laugh and joke ’Cuz he thought he’d always stay. He gave his all on Bulldog field For the pride he felt within Just to wear the Black and Orange Was incentive towards a win. He brags to all Juniors That he’s free from books and pens, Yet he wishes he was in their shoes Just to do it all again! People just can’t wait to get out, But underneath the smiles and the laughs I sense some tears and frowns. Yes- the days pass into years the laughter into tears . . . As he shuts his locker door He doesn’t need it anymore. Mercedes Bern Magnolia Memories Anyone discussing the Magnolia School today would undoubtably refer to it as a small school. Those who have attended or taught at Magnolia over the years will admit that the statement is true, but it is not sufficient as a description of the school. The students today, as in the past, are a close-knit group who care about each other and are proud of their school. This annual tells the story of this year’s pride. Look through the student life pages, the class photos, the activities, and the sports. The same faces appear in each photo, but the keen sighted person finds the student body is huge in its accomplishments, participation, and school pride, and minute in numbers only. The school started out as a 6x24 ft. district school. Later, in 1893, three districts were consolidated, and a nine room, two story building was constructed. The building is still standing in Magnolia. The top floor has been converted to apartments, but the lower level is still the home of the Kruger family. Our present structure was built in 1919, at a cost of $39,000. Two editions have been built onto that original building. The first edition was the classrooms and offices which were added in 1952 at a cost of $115,000. The latest addition of the gym and lunch room were added on. C 1 a s s o f 1 9 2 2 First graduating class (from L to R): Erma Palmer Smith, Hazel Dean Young, Sylvia Kienash Nelson, Helen Lester Heard. 79 Mrs. Erma Palmer Smith, a member of the first graduating class, visited our school this year. She and her husband are now living in Long Beach, California, and were visiting friends and relatives around Magnolia. It was quite a treat for all of us to meet her and have a chance to ask her some questions. Elder Olson, a Magnolia class of 1928 graduate and a past school board member, who still makes his home at Magnolia also provided us with some interesting facts. The first class graduated in 1922. Class days for these first four graduates were filled with attending math, science, history, and English; but in those days Home Economics was known as Manual Training and all business courses were listed under the title Commercial Training. Classes were forty minutes long, and each day all high school students reported to assembly which was the same thing as a home room study hall. The classes Mrs. Smith and Mr. Olsen described sounded similar to today’s classes in many ways. Perhaps it is true that the more things change the more they remain the same. Girl’s Basketball Back row (left to right): Ermal Palmer, Marjorie Dickey, Alva Barkly, Front row (left to right): Helen Lester, Marie Connelly, Marge Khowton, Hazel Dean, Myrna Frakes. School was not all work and no play even in those days. Mrs. Smith also sent us this picture of the girl’s basketball team. Aren’t those uniforms becoming? Perhaps some things have changed for the better. The enjoyment of working as a team and showing school spirit has not changed over the years even though the uniforms and hair styles have. Magnolia did not have a football team until much later. The popular boys’ sports were baseball and basketball. Magnolia was a“B” team in those days and did very well. In 1924 Magnolia went to the state tournaments and competed against thirty-two other teams. The basketball team went to state again in 1925 but that time the process for attending the tournament had changed. First a team had to win its conference. Next, the winning teams played in the region play off, and the winners of the regions proceeded to the state tournaments. If you look closely at these photos, you can see that this is the bottom floor of the old portion of the school. After the new gym was built, this old gym was turned into the library, and the stage became the kindergarten room. Back in those early days, there was more of a drama department than today. Mr. Olson participated in three musicals while he was in high school. Their was not a school band, but the music was provided by a community band directed by Mrs. Carl Anderson. Lloyd Voss is probably one of the most famous Magnolia graduates. Voss played football for the University of Nebraska and went on to play pro football with Green Bay and Pittsburgh for ten years. At the back of this book is a list of the graduates of Magnolia High School from 1922 through 1981. 81 LUVERNE FEDERAL SAVINGS AND LOAN ASSOCIATION “Where Savings Pays” 201 West Main Luverne, Minn.
