Text from Pages 1 - 96 of the 1973 volume:

Here we grow again; everyday there’s a newness, something else to do. WELCOME! The annual staff of Magnolia High School wishes to take this opportunity to invite you to read and see the events that have taken place this year at M. H. S. We hope that some may amuse you, but more we would like you to think back and try to remember some of the grand things that happened to you in school, and maybe give you new ideas to use in the years to come. So now let's go back through time to the date August 28, 1972 and take a look at the mis- haps and problems of some of the students first day of school. Now turn the page and we're on our way. . . For some of the new seventh grade students it’s quite a switch from grade school. Having to move around every 50 minutes in those halls, and cramming all those books into those tiny lockers really leaves something to be desired! One Year of Going to Classes— That We Hope We ll All Live Through! Here we have Dixie and Tim, two kindergarten students, who are having some of the problems many of us had on the first day of school. We can be sure that Mrs. Richter will help them with this problem, but we are sure it is just the start of many more to come. And here are just some of the looks and surprises that some of the other classmen have on their first day of school. 3 FRONT ROW: Brad Skattum, Tim Cowell, Greg Vande Velde, Jill Swenson, Dawn Cragoe, Jenalee Smook. SECOND ROW: Becky Cauwels, Sharlene Lorensen. THIRD ROW: Tom Binford, Joyce Lais, Diane Thompson, Joleen Davis, Carol Mammen, Kyle Tutsch. The boys slick down their hair and straighten their ties with a frown on their face, while the girls blush, pull up their sweaters, and smile pretty. Most everyone trys to look their best but some of them have a hard time doing it. Juniors Ring Through, Into a New Way of Life. Now comes the time the juniors enjoy the most-They have the opportunity to a- dorn their hands by ordering their rings. The Juniors had their choice to choose from two different styles of rings. Here are just some of the beautiful hands after they have received their rings. The two styles of rings chosen by the Junior class of 1972-73. 6 At Tri-State, the Beat Goes on. Practice earns a B rating. The Seniors Tell the World, of Their Graduation by Ordering Announcements. This year the Seniors had a difficult decision to make in choosing their senior announce- ments. Many styles were liked by different students, but as long as the seniors chose dark blue and light blue as their colors, they de- cided to choose this announcement for this year. 7 Drama Through the Ages, Our First Assembly This Year. On October 26, the students had their first assembly. It was pre- sented by the Lycum Reportory Players from the University of Minn - esota. They presented a three-act short play which was enjoyed by all. This First Nine Weeks Were Bearable, and We Hope the Last Three Quarters Are Tolerable Rejoice! Rejoice! We felt the joy of completing our first nine weeks of school until the next Wednesday when our report cards came out, after which, most of the students decided that in order to be pro- moted into the next grade they would have to put forth more effort next quarter. On November 10 and 11, the Juniors and Seniors Flipped--I mean they presented the play F.L. I. P. P. E. D. We had quite a large cast of 10 boys and 17 girls--which would have been hard to control if had not been for our illustrous, domineering, director, Mr. Tutsch. The students enjoyed presented it and it was well received by the public. 9 On December 21, we had our annual Christmas program. The Christmas spirit was shared by both the grade school and high school. The grade school presented a small program entitled THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS. The high school band and chorus played and sang a few selections, The program was organized by Mr. Barnett and Miss Urch. The students were accompanied by Diane Rust. 10 University of Minnesota Program Service Presents; Lyceum Childrens Theatre Scenes from and Stories by Hans Christian Andersen. Selected from... The Princess and the Pea, The Snow Queen, The Steadfast Tin Soldier, Thumbelina, The Ugly Duckling, and The Red Shoes. On January 19, we were again blessed with report cards for another nine week period. They were an improvement over the first nine weeks but they were still not up to the usual good stand- ards that students of Magnolia High School usually possess. On- ward to the Third Quarter! This Assembly Had Its Ups and Downs With a Trampolinist and His Wife. On March 12, we had our sec- ond assembly in which we were entertained by a trampolinist and his wife, Ursala, who was from Sweden. Six of the junior and sen- ior boys were also included in this program and did quite well in com - peting with the two gymnasts. The program had its ups and downs but it was enjoyed by most of the stu- dents. 12 Now 27 Weeks Are Over, We Never Thought We’d Make It; But Now the Seniors Have the Privilege and They Made the Most of It. This year it was a priviledge to have Collette Matthiesen on the Magnolia High School Speech Team. Collette won a star rating in the sub-district speech con- test in Luverne, and went on to compete in the District tournament at Worthington. The 1973 declam team was advised by Mrs. Whitcomb. Collette, Magnolia High School is proud of you. Today We Are Entertained, by Our Neighbors From the South. They Gave to Us a Performance, by Word of Mouth. On April 4, we were entertained by two chicanos who sang many of the songs of their home country which in case you were wondering is Mexico. One of our leading senioritos was serenaded by the Mexicans and was thoroughly thrilled with their enchantment. The Mexicans were on tour of the United States and spoke very little English, but they seemed to be en- joying themselves very much by presenting perform- ances at high schools. 14 Headin’ for a Weddin ” 15 Magnolia Students Honored at Activities Banquet.
