Taking a retrospective view, I like to linger at the threshhold of this great occasion when four years ago I strolled into this beautiful structure. Happy to reach high school, but happier still to be enrolled as a stu- dent in.Maggie L. Walker High-the school of my choice, I began to visualize the time when I should appear on this platform as a candidate for graduation. Parents, Teachers, Principals, and Friends, you have made these impressions, not merely air castles as they were then, but dreams that have come true, and tonight we stand here to welcome you, not in choice language, but with hearts full of love and gratitude. A The maxin Actions speak louder than words will spur us on to make these expressions tonight fruitful in your lives. As the years come and go may you realize sincerely in the expressions, uttered tonight, joy in the occasion that brings you here at this hour, and the greatest fulfillment of your dearest hopes as we take our places in building a greater civilization. A tinge of sorrow comes over me tonight for I regret that the Senior Class of '45 must part from our beloved school, schoolmates and especially our classmates. Many of us started together in the ele- mentary schools, entered high school together and have labored here four pleasa t years. But sadness must give place to the perfecting of our plans. Though this is our Commencement, we are reminded of the fact that commencement does not mean the end of education, but simply the beginning. During these years We have had your guidance, dear parents and teachers, and to you we are in- debted for inspiring leadership sympathetic under- standing and untiring perserverance. You have pre- pared us to face the problems of every day life and challenged us to go forward with greater determina- tion to achieve our goal. We will not betray that trust and confidence. We will treasure the instruc- tions so effectively and patiently given along to make them a part of our daily lives. It shall be our greatest 30 aim to do those things th it will malye you proud of us. Many of us will continue our education in the various fields, but we will hold within our memories, the wonderful days we have had in VValker I-Iigh School. Wherever we go for higher instruction we go better prepared, for Walker has seen that we are girded with stren th to bravely and patiently attack whatever difhcufties present themselves, Some of us will not be fortunate enough to attend school of higher learning, but whatever we choose as our lifework we shall work untiringly until success crowns our efforts. One writer has said. I quote, Ulf you wish success in life, make perseverance your bosom friend, experience your wise counsellor, cau- tion your elder brother and hope your guardian genius. Unquote. As we leave this dear old shrine of learning, we shall keep the fires of friendship kindled by our teach- ers ever burning brightly, we shall find a new and lasting delight in their efforts to make us count for the best. A special tribute to our beloved sponsors, Mr. Iohn Williams and Mr. Lester V. Hill, we present tonight in these .choice lines: There is a destiny that makes us brothers, None goes his way alone, What we send into the lives of others Comes back into our own. Dear Principals, to you we extend our love and appreciation. We realize more fully tonight your deep interest in every phase of our lives. Your abid- ing faith, in spite of our strongwills, that some day we would measure up, and cleverly entwincrl about us, have served their purpose in bringing us to this milestone tonight. VVhen the going gets touch you shall be our inspiration. Schoolmates, upward and onward, the goal is just ahead. Friends, one and all, as we near the end of our school life here at dear ,old Maggie L. YValker High, we commend you to Him who is mindful even of thc sparrows fall, and bid you a fond farewell. BERTHA RITCHIE.
