LEADERS PARTICIPATE IN STUDENT COUNCIL Student Body president Cliff Adams led MHS students through their successful year of '66. Cliff was amply prepared to meet and deal with the old and new problems always confronting a Student Body president. Chosen in an extensive interview at Sherman High School to represent this district. Cliff attended the National Student Council convention in Lexington, Kentucky, the summer of '65. Willis Keithly, former Science Teacher of the class of 1966 delivered the Baccalaureate sermon. Reverend Brooks led the Invocation and Benediction. Glen will be remembered by all of us but it will not be because he was a swinger . To Glen, being a swinger was a secondary concern, as his first was to be a friend to everyone. He was easy to get to know, and always had time for his friends. A transfer to MHS his sophomore year, Glen was a JV wrestler and was active in Future Farmers of America. He was affiliated with the First Baptist Church. Steve Chubb Karla Clowers Dan Cogburn Students were saddened by the loss of Gary Skeans who met Ills death in a farming accident in early September. Gary was termed by his classmates as an all-American boy in every sense with equal respect and friendliness to all. He attended MHS his freshman year, transferred to a high school in Garthersburg, Maryland his sophomore year and returned to MHS for his junior year. All outdoor activities and sports interested Gary. He was active in the Methodist Youth Fellowship, 4-H and Future Farmers of America. Sharon was active in Girls’ Athletic Association, Warm Springs Teen Club, and Girls’ League. Sharon is remembered in the hearts of friends and teachers for her infectious sense of humor and ready smile. The most successful project in which the class participated as a whole was the Clothing Drive. Coordinating with this class was the Class of 1968 which helped them to victory in this worthwhile event. The Juniors were also active in Homecoming, Food Drive, Bottle Drive, Junior-Senior Prom, Junior Class Play and various other activities. Ambition and drive proved the class capable of leading their school to be one of the best in Central Oregon. It also gets the sole recognition for being the largest class in the history of Madras High School. The enthusiasm this class has shown can be seen through the various activities that they have participated in such as Homecoming, Food Drive, Clothing Drive, and the Freshman Class Dance. Their enthusiasm, eagerness and willingness to make their school one of the best are a few of the outstanding qualities that can be found in this class. SPORTS White Buffalo varsity football squad finished their first A-2 season since 1961 in the Greater Oregon League with fourth place honors behind a record of three wins and five losses. Madras scored a total of 80 points during the year for a ten point per game average. Opponents tallied 128 for a 16 per game average. The Buffs gained a net total of 1067 yards for a 133 average per game. Team captain Kevin O'Neill was a bright spot for the Bison scoring six touchdowns and leading in the scoring department. He also was named to the Western Division Coaches All-star team as an offensive end. VARSITY HOOPSTERS FINISH FOURTH IN LEAGUE White Buffalo varsity hoopsters finished their first season back in A-2 ranks, after three years in the A-l leagues, with a fourth place finish in Greater Oregon League competition. Working toward a season record of 7 wins, 11 losses, the Buffs opened non-conference action dropping two games to A-l Redmond. The Buff five then split with Prine-ville and lost one to St. Helen's while taking a single encounter from Scappoose. To finish non-league games, the Buffs took second place in the Central Oregon Tournament losing only to the Bend Lava Bears. To start the season out right, the JVs took two close contests from A-l Redmond and then dropped three heartbreakers in a row to A-l Prineville. In league action the Buffs first encounter was an overtime loss to Heppner but the Buffs came back later in the season to nip the Mustangs in another attempt. The Bison crew lost twice to Grant Union. Junior Buffalo roundballers battled their way to a 6-9 win-loss record over a tough 13 game schedule that showed three over-time games for the Buffs and ten games that were won or lost by less than three baskets. District 7A-2B wrestling tournament was held for the first time at MHS in the new gym. Tom Smoot, Art Bierly, Jim Crowley, Jerry Smith, and Rennie Mehlenbeck won berths in the state meet. Smoot placed second in the state and Mehlenbeck came back from an initial loss to take third in the heavyweight division. VARSITY TRACKSTERS TAKE THIRD IN STATE MHS Varsity Thinclads coached by Rob Nelson and Charles Barnhart romped to a third place state finish to climax a successful season in Greater Oregon A-2 League. A depth laden Burns team was the only team to defeat the Buff tracksters during the regular season, winning four of four invitational meets and sub-district and district contests. The Buffs defeated all other league opponents, including Wahtonka, Sherman County, Heppner, Vale, Ontario, and Grant Union. Buffs Cindermen third in State were Ray Sohn, Stan Endres, Rennie Mehlenbeck, Carl Phifer, Dave Mollman, and Dave Jorgensen. The new Buff Stadium was inaugurated when in the first meet of the season, Madras defeated Redmond and Prineville, both A-l teams, in a triangular meet. Madras varsity diamondmen finished their most successful season in Madras Hi history with a 12-6 win-loss league record to capture second place in the western division of the Greater Oregon League. The Buffs played in a best-of-three game series with Wahtonka to decide the subdistrict championship after trying the Golden Eagles after the regular scheduled season with 12 wins, 4 losses each. Wahtonka won the division championship with consecutive wins of 2-0 and 5-2. Coach Vince Powell's 16-man squad had a nucleus of 11 returning letterman including three-year senior returnees Vince Couch and Rich Priday. GOLFERS BOAST 24-6 WIN, LOSS RECORD Buff golfers boasted a 26-4-2 win-loss-tie record as this years season came to a close. The team’s four returninglettermen were Lewis Pitt, Gordon Harris, Charles Jackson, and Bill Cassel. They led the bison to an ace victory at district in Ontario and also on the state tourney in Portland May 23 and 24. The golfers were coached by Robert Clifton. During league action the White Buffaloes tangled with Bend, Redmond, Crook County, Klamath Falls, Lebanon, Wahtonka, The Dalles, and John Day.
