Football Summary Experiencing one of their best vears, the White Buffalo gridstcrs posted a 5-3 season's record, tying for the sub-district title with Sherman. Coach Frank Good’s pigskin squad opened their season play at Bend September 9. After a 13-6 edge A-l Bend handed the Buffs last year, they kept a clean all time record with Madras by trimming them 15-0. In their second non-league match at Redmond under the lights of the Panthers new field, Good’s eleven fell to their second A-l opponents 19-0. Facing A-2 Stayton September 23 in a pre-league action on Kelly field, the Bison herd stomped their enemy 26-0. This gave the Buffs a one win, two loss record in pre-league play. Opening league action on home ground September 30, Madras found an easy victim in Bums as the Hilanders had a 47-point deficit at halftime and fell to a 61-0 ending. Making it two for two, Good’s pigskin players, stomped the Heppner Mustangs on a foreign field October 7. The White Buffalos field captain, senior Gary Moe, rambled 285 yards to aid the 32-7 triumph. Taking revenge for a 14-7 downing by the Prospectors of John Day last year, gridsters of Madras racked up their third straight win, handing the Prospectors a 21-7 loss October 14 on Kelly field. Traveling to Sherman for an afternoon tilt, the Bison experienced a scoreless match as Sherman blanked Madras 13-0 October 21 for the first league setback of the season. Madras met and conquered its last opponent, Lakeview, on the road October 28 by a 24-12 margin. At the same time, Heppner upset Sherman at Heppner, leaving Madras and Sherman tied for top spot in league standings. Because Sherman defeated Madras during season play, they gained the right to advance to the district play-offs. Captain Gary Moe Gregg Macy A Few Last Minute Pointers From Coach Good First row - P. Not pictured is T. Clark and manager Craig Leslie. o-captains Gregg Macy and Joe Piedmont Basketball Summary No better ending could be enjoyed by the Buffaloes and their resigning coach Ole Johnson than the capturing of the state A-2 basketball championship at Coos Bay March 13-15 and an impressive 25-1 season’s record. Down eight points at half-time, the raging White Buffaloes flew back with a second naif stampede to upend Coquille’s Red Devils 63-51 for the A-2 championship trophy after passing Henley and Sherwood in the first and second rounds of the tourney respectively. Bison’s lone loss came a week before the tourney in a non-counter at Bend to determine the Central Oregon champs. The Lava Bears outlasted the Buffs 76-68 in a fast-break contest. In league action, the Bison’s closest opponent was 16 points away. The free-substituting Madras squad handled all leaguers easily. This year the season opened with counting contests against John Day on foreign ground. They were the ones who came within 16 points of the powerful Buffs. Meeting Heppner, John Day, Sherman and Burns four times each. Ole Johnson's squad posted a 16-0 league mark with convincing victories in each case. The towering Buffaloes stomped the Heppner Mustangs 84-33 and 71-41, Sherman 86-43, John Day by margins of more than 20 points and Burns by spreads of 30 and more. The 12-man gunning squad all racked up points in pre-district action as none of the players saw more than three quarters of action in a game. Several occasions saw the entire squad score as the team averaged over 65 points per game, holding their enemies to about 45. They outdid their opponents in all statistic departments; shooting, averages, totals and rebounding. Madras met and bettered two weekend non-league A-l series in pre-Christmas action. Prineville Cowboys battled the Buffs in two close Madras wins but the Redmond Panthers found the Bison too much for them as they fell by 21 points twice to the Buffaloes. Top-rated Madras in newspaper polls, met second ranked Mac-Hi to determine the district winners. The score-crazy Bison outran the Pioneers 82-70 in the opening of a best 2 of 3 series and licked them again 49-37 in a lower defensive-minded contest. These wins gave the tourney berth to the Buffs of which they took advantage. This 25-1 season’s record proved to be the best of the ten-year reign of Ole Johnson. He will continue his excellent coaching tactics at Wilson Hi in Portland next year. He recorded a 152-84 overall record and has taken three teams to state tourneys. From these teams six players have made tourney teams, two of these being Gregg Macy and Joe Piedmont this year. The Buffs Play For Keeps ‘Now what do I do?” asks Joe. First Year For Matmen Wrestling Summary Coach Dan Leever referees for team members Dan Beard and Bob Grimsbo during wrestling practice. Expanding their field of sports, Madras experienced its first season of wrestling as coach Dan Lever led the mat squad. Although the new team failed to outscore any of their opponents, they gained the needed experience to make them a big threat next year. The majority of the matmen consisted of freshmen, sophomores and juniors to return next year. Four mat teams met the Madras squad during the regular season; Maupin, Redmond, Prineville and Burns. Each of these schools had the advantage of experience over the Buff matmen. Each time the matmen met opponents they displayed a better match even though they show a 0-8 season’s record. More five-point falls and match points were earned as the season advanced. Senior Jim Fletcher was elected team captain. The Madras squad competed in weight classes ranging from 90-210 pounds.
