Thanks for the memory .... 1957 e Madras Union High School Madras, Oregon In a sense the '57 Hi-Sage is dedicated to you, the student body of MUHS. The annual staff has worked throughout the year with this goal in mind—to please you, each and every student of Madras High School — by capturing in picture and print your friends, memories, yourself and your '56-'57 year at Madras High. We hope we have accomplished our goal with the theme Thanks for the Memory. Your editor, Carolyn Thomsen Contents Aministration Faculty Student Government Classes Organizations Activities Royalty Football Basketball Snaps Adversisement Carolyn Thomsen Editor-in-Chief Barbara Olsen Assistant Editor Sharon Piercy, Helena Overhulse Advertising Managers Steve Binder Photographer Richard Macy, Dean Spurgeon Art Editors Bill Moore Copy Writer Howard Hillis Adviser Dedication Dedicated to Sylvia Breshears Sylvia spent six and one half years at Madras Union High School. She grew with the system and became an efficient and valuable employee as District Clerk. Unofficially she fulfilled the needs of the girls of the school for guidance. Her interest in the teen-agers as well as efficiency at work were among the qualities for which she became so valuable and loved. Besides fulfilling her role as wife, mother, and District Clerk, Sylvia and her husband, Everett, took the time and effort to sponsor teen-age dances and act as advisers to the teen-age dance council. With regret the administration accepted Sylvia's resignation this year due to her plans to move to Washington with her family. It is hoped that Sylvia will recall pleasant memories of her years at Madras High School. We also hope that the feeling developed toward her by the faculty, the students, the school board, and the community ere mutual. It is with the best wishes of all that this dedication is made and may she find a full and satisfying life in her new location. Registration day, August 30, found students packed into the office to begin a new school year. Warm Springs, Grizzly, Metolius, Gateway, Agency Plains and Antelope bus routes bring students to MUHS to make this familiar scene every morning of the week. Important to the functioning of MUHS is Superintendent Carl V. Rhoda who has been a member of the faculty for 12 years. Writing college scholarship recommendations occupies much of the time of Vice principal Bill Wright. Mr. Wright is dean of boys, student council adviser, and concessions and leadership training adviser. He has been a member of the faculty for 11 years. Starting the day off with a smile is Nicky Cassel district clerk. Mrs. Cassel replaced Sylvia Breshears post second semester. Dorothy Piedmont goes about her daily chore of figuring up cafeteria receipts. Mrs. Piedmont, who has been at MUHS for five years, handles student affairs and attendance, also. Coached by Jim Wallace and Dale Bret-hauer, the White Buffaloes wound their 1956 grid-iron season with a three win, three loss, two tie record. They were unbeaten on their home field. The Buffaloes traveled to Bend September 7 for their season opener where the Bears set them back by a score of 19-6. The following week-end they bounced by with a decisive 25-14 win over the Oakridge Warriors on the Oakridge turf. Coach Jim Wallace termed the Buffaloes contest of September 21 as “our most disa-pointing game of the season.” The Buffs fought a 6-6 tie with the John Day Prospectors on Kelly Field. September 28 the White Buffaloes gave a repeat performance as far as scoring was concerned. They again battled to a 6-6 tie, this time with Central Union of Monmouth-Independence. The Buffaloes opened their league action at Lakeview where they fell to the Honkers by a 33-13 margin. The previous year Lake-view also rolled over the Buffs by the same score. The Redmond Panthers, traditional rivals of the Bison, were next on the Buffalo schedule. Again Madras dropped behind in scoring and lost to the Cats by a 14-0 edge. The Buffaloes came back after a two-game losing streak to win over the Burns Hilanders by a 12-0 score in the Bison’s second league encounter. This win placed Madras in second spot in the sub-district for this season. The following week-end was on opening but the White Buffaloes by no means rested. Instead, they made ready to again face the Panthers of Redmond in the last game of the year. This was the first time the Buffaloes had met the same squad twice during football action in one season. They battled to a 13-7 edge over Redmond to sucessfully end the season. Schedule Scores Bend We 6 They 19 Oakridge 25 14 John Day 6 6 Central Union 6 6 Lakeview 13 33 Redmond 0 14 Burns 12 0 Redmond 13 7 Buck Smith, Winner of the Most-valuable Player award for th '56 football season. Krebs (front row) manager Dudley Thomas, Ron Griffin, Basketball Summary Coach Ole Johnson’s experienced White Buffaloes ended a spectacular hoop season with 23 straight wins to their credit after powering over regular season competition and receiving the runner-up trophy for state A-2 championship. The Buffaloes opened the season by taking a pair of wins from Willamette 75-34 and 33-32, December 14 and 15 on the Madras court. December 21 and 22 the Bisons pounded out two victories over A-l competition as they walloped St. Helens and Washington High of Portland 68-48 and 58-42, respectively, in a mid-season tournament held in Bend. Opening league competition, the Buffs tripped the Lakevew Honkers 87-66 and 50-41 January 11 and 12 at Lakeview. Madras again downed A-l competition as they slid past the Bend Lava Bears January 18 and 19 by 45-32 and 50-38 margins. The following weekend Coach Johnson’s herd blasted the Redmond Panthers 72-45 and 80-51. Playing host to Bums February 1 and 2 Madras handed the Hilanders a pair of league defeats in the way of 63-54 and 4943 scores. Again playing host the following weekend the Buffs rolled over Lakeview by 80-39 and 97-52 tallies to win their fifth and sixth league frays of the season. Again plowing through league competition, 5648 and 73-62, Madras swept a pair of contests from the hands of the Highlanders on the Burns court to clinch the sub-district championship. Ending regular season action the Bison, with 17 straight wins to their credit, hammered the Panthers from Redmond by 53-38 and 47-33 scores. Playing for the district championship and a berth in the state A-2 tournament, the Madras squad tromped Grant Union high of John Day 80-63 on the Prospector’s court February 27. Two evenings later, this time on their home court, the Buffaloes secured the championship by pouncing Grant by a 56-31 score. Entering tournament play the White Buffaloes, with a 21 straight win record, eased past the Glide Wildcats 7745. Meeting the Dayton Pirates in their second fray of the tourney, Madras again came out on top by a 5840 margin and placed themselves in the final game of the tournament against the Scappoose Indians. This time Madras came out on the short end of a 58-51 tally but placed two players, Paul Stine and Murray Newton on the first five of the all-state team and Dick Weiser, leading season scorer for Madras on the second team.
