M.U. MADRAS . OREGON Presents DEDICATION We, the students of Madras High, dedicate our 1955 Hi-Sage to Clair T. Howland who for nine years so faithfully served our school as bus driver. Clair T. Howland was first employed at MUHS two years after moving here from Bend in 1944. He was a friend and companion to all and was well-liked and dependable. An enthusiastic fan, Mr. Howland seldom missed a White Buffalo game. Without exception everyone who worked and associated with him felt a great regard and affection for him. Clair T. The lights, long a dream at Madras High, became a reality through the efforts of interested fathers and student representatives last fall. Special poles had been purchased previously from Pacific Power and Light, and a lenient agreement with Portland General Electric helped to lower the original estimate of $10,000 to approximately $7,000. Negotiations with the U. S. National Bank resulted in a loan of sufficient size to be paid in semi annuaL payments. At this writing, two of the payments have been made without any difficulty. The light project, entirely student-instigated and co-ordinated, has provided MUHS with a football plant that is probably unmatched by any school of similar size in Oregon. Listed among future improvements are four-iier concrete bleachers and baseball lights. These will not be possible, however, until the light-loan has been paid in full. The men-in-white had their ups and downs throughout the ’54 season with their best games played against Burns, Toledo, Columbia Prep and Redmond. Madras began the season by dazzling Central Oregon football fans with an outstanding performance at the jamboree. The Bison, using a tricky spread-formation, not only surprised fans but bewildered the opposition as well. Madras scored the only TD of the evening as Bend-Madras turned back Redmond-Prineville 6-0. On September 11 the men-in-white were edged 13-0 by a powerful Bend Lava Bear squad. The next Friday the White Buffaloes inaugurated their football lights with a decisive 26-2 win over the Burns Hiland-ers. Lakeview defeated Madras 20-0 to give the Buffs their first league defeat. The Prineville Cowboys, district champs, added to the Buffaloes’ woes as they thumped Madras 33-0. The Columbia Prep game brought a peculiar experience to light as Madras rolled up 355 yards to the Preppers 285 but still lost 32-19. Madras bounced back October 22 to squeeze out a 20-12 triumph over Maupin. The Buffaloes chalked up their third win of the season with 13-12 victory over the Toledo Boomers. Madras fell to Redmond 20-13 in one of the roughest contests the White Buffaloes encountered during their ’54 season. Final tabulations and statistics for the 54 season are listed below.
