Text from Pages 1 - 92 of the 1954 volume:

We, the graduating class of 1954, dedicate our year book, the Hi-Sage, to Roy Clowers, custodian and friend of all. During our four years we have asked much, and never been refused. He has disrupted his schedule many times to help us with plays and dances and to help clean up after initiations. Good luck, Roy. Well always remember you with a soft spot in our hearts. The year is 1970, my silent moon-maid Charlene Harris and I are leaving a la-carte strip located in the capital of the moon. In a matter of seconds, we’ve cut rockets and are drifting over Central Oregon, banana capital of the universe. Mr. and Mrs. Roger Diddock, famed fisson-banana tycoons, chauffeured by Shirley Cunningham Reynolds, are touring their' plantation via H20-powered ship, designed by Dick Meuret. Nearing Madras, we see that station KRAZY-TV, under the management of Charles See and Faye Ferguson Incorporated, is still in operation. Reporting to work is Everett Stratton, the new Caruso. Other famed stars lolling about the premises are: Loretta and Louanna Parsons, currently starring in “My Friend Herma”; Charlotte Lathrop, “Betty Button’’; Jerry McBride, “Space-hound for the FBI’’; Donna Huckaby, “Schmedda Schmop-per”; and Kenny Foster replacing Jack Erb on “Snagnet”. On stage we hear the voices of Margaret Fine, Kitty Gates, and Naomi Nance discording on “Hoggie in the Window”. In the lobby the familiar voices of the famous novelist Clayton Binuer, and Raymond Ames, acclaimed writer of sonnets, are heard in a heated discussion over Jay Stansbery’s whereabouts. Jay, you know is touring the universe on a presidential campaign. Blasting off the roof of Henske’s Hot-spot, are Duck Allbee, Jim Dickman, and Bob Sprengel. (Bye the way, Anne Thomsen and Sally Moffat are smash-hit entertainers at this exclusive club.) In hot pursuit of the moon- shiners is Kenny Smith, commander of the Women’s Space Cadets. The mitey mites of the WSC include: Pat Tyrrell Lauretta Hayes, Evelyn Crandall, Janet Bierman, Mary Jane Wiese, Jan Luelling, and Bonnie Summers. Next Barry’s Blamy Bower attracts our attention. Librarian of this notorious old folks home is none other than Carolyn Brown, who is at the moment very busy attending to the needs of five patients—Marilyn Ams-berry, Norman Thrasher, Lowell Nichols, Connie Tjer-nagel, and Alan Green. In the kitchen we find Bonnie Crandall, local plumber, mending a leak beneath the sink. Charles Nathan, cook, is busy peeling potatoes. Professor of Theosphy, Danny Macy and his two star pupils, Mary Johnson and Irma Stephens, wander into the dispensary where L. E. Crecelius, nurses aid to Carolyn Otey, is practicing voodoo on Ray Koskela, a poor innocent patient. Norman Holmes, Central Oregon College of Education president, is celebrating Dave Duling’s fifteenth consecutive year as a sophomore at COCE. Roberta Slinker is found whizzing around the COCE football field in the school’s atomic-auto and barely missed runing down Bill Machamer, the great football star of this day and age. This display of driving is only common to all pupils of Vernon Pendergraft, safety-driving instructor. Thus we must leave dear Madras and the surrounding communities for the present. We’re on the way to the moon again and leave our old friends in the best of hands. C. Mallory Grover Jennings Louie Gertrude Gladys Clara Smith Sports Summary Compiling one of the best records Madras has ever had as an A school, Coach Ole Johnson’s White Buffaloes ended the regular season play with 16 wins and eight losses and the right to enter the State Basketball tourney at Eugene. The Buffaloes beat every team they played at least once and never lost to a team outside of their league. A high point of the season came when the Buff’s beat The Dalles on the Indians home floor. It was the first time this high ranked team has been beat on its home floor in three years. The Madras cagers also swept a first place in the annual Linfield tourney by beating three valley teams in order. At one time in the season the record stood at 12 wins and 1 loss. Then sickness and bad luck seemed to catch up with the Buffs and showed on their record. The Hoopsters main drawback was their lack of height, but their scrappiness and good team spirit enabled them to knock off competition of much greater height. Displaying an all around competitive spirit all year long the Buffs came through despite several odds against them to win the District Championship. As this is being written the Buffaloes are preparing to enter the State Tourney at Eugene, where a good showing is expected. Due to publication difficulties Track and Baseball summaries appear for the foregoing year. All material for the annual has to be in the hands of the publishers before these two sports even start. The 1933 track squad, smallest in several years, took fifth in the district meet at Prineville with two members qualifying to enter the state meet. Bob Kauffman and Bud Gogjen qualified in the pole vault and high jump, respectively. Others taking places were Bill Machamer, Jim Brizendine and Jack Kaiser. Five lettermen graduated from the squad. The team is composed of eight seniors and four juniors. Congratulations to Coach Johnson and the team for their fine showing. Fielding one of the finer teams Madras has had in recent years, Coach Bob Pollard’s White Buffaloes finished the eight game season with a 3 won, 1 tied, and 4 lost record. Playing against top-grade competition, such as the Prineville Cowboys (eventual A2 champs) and several A1 schools, this can be considered a fine showing by the small A2 school. The Buffs opened the season by losing a heartbreaker to Bend, in which Madras led in everything but the score, 6-0 for Bend. The rest of the season saw Buffaloes overcome powerful Redmond, traditional rivals, and Lakeview in league play. The Buffs also topped John Day, coming through in fine style after trailing at the half, in a non-league game. A big disappointment came when a Cascade team scored on a freak occurrence to give them a tie with Madras when Madras was easily the better team. Nine seniors will be lost to graduation. Throughout the season the Buffs played good ball and congratulations are in order to the coach and team. The second year of baseball at Madras in several years saw them wind up with an impressive seven won, four lost record. During the season the Madras club beat Redmond twice, Burns once, and Bend once. During this time they also beat Culver three times and lost two to Prineville, one each to Bend and Burns. This record was sufficient to warrant them second place in the league standings. The 1954 team was without the services of six lettermen from the year before as they were lost to graduation. Eight lettermen returned to this year’s squad. £ 4gi£§ 9 Jr Team Bend Burns Lakeview Prineville John Day Redmond Cascade Oakridge ■' -' • - vv : Basketball scores Score Team Madras Op. White Buffaloes and their fans were awarded the first place sportsmanship trophy for their conduct vhile at Eugene. Quotable Quotes Honor Buffs “Red-hot Madras team” and “fast-gunning gang that shoots like crazy”—These are only a few adjectives quoted by surprised news reporters as they viewed with delight the fighting Buffaloes who set the pace at the state tourney. Quotes like the following were prevalent throughout the sports pages. “The hungriest team in the 1954 state tournament, the White Buffaloes of Madras, provided a real bit of TNT Wednesday afternoon.”— Portland Journal. “The likes of Chuck Nathan, Roger Diddock, Dan Macy and Larry Fivecoat are something the annual hoop fest has not seen in many a moon.”—Portland Oregonian. “Madras, the ‘darling’ of the fans here at the state A basketball tournament, moves into the semi-finals tonight . . . ”—Bend Bulletin. “The White Buffaloes from Madras were pure ivory Thursday night as the tournament’s most popular team moved into the championship semi-finals . . . ”—Eugene Register-Guard. “The Buffaloes have found themselves a slice of everyone’s heart.” —Portland Oregonian. “Like the Yankees and their big innings Madras seems to have a way of coming up with a big quarter to keep its tourney hope alive.”— Bend Bulletin. “ . . . the Buffs were one of the hottest shooting cluos in the history of state high school basketball.”—McMinnville Daily News-Register. “Coach Ole Johnson’s boys lost no prestige in defeat.”—Eugene Register-Guard. “It was generally accepted by fans taking in tourney games that the Madras club could have conceivably gone all the way to the title if Roger Diddock had not broken an ankle in the team’s second game.” —McMinnville Daily News-Register. From the column Prep-O-sitions in the Journal the following “mosts” were listed in favor of Madras: “Most popular team—Madras.” “Most spectacular shot—Larry Fivecoat’s back-to-the basket field goal for Madras in the semi-final game with Eugene.” “Funniest incident—Charles Nathan, 5 foot 10 inch, 180-pound Madras forward, tieing up the biggest centers in the tournament and forcing a jump ball.” “Tough luck player—Roger Diddock, Madras guard, who suffered a broken tibia and missed the White Buffaloe’s semi-final and third-place game.” “Most spectacular shooter—Bill Machamer of Madras. He had the crowd blinking more than once in disbelief after sinking an ‘impossible’ field goal.” “Biggest surprise—Madras and Clatskanie gaining the semifinals.” COMPLIMENTS OF EARL’S SUPER FOOD MARKET Where The Wise Economize Complete One Slop Food Market Inside The City—Outside The Traffic Jam Phone 2554 Madras J.
