The squad voted Jim Schoff the most valuable player award and named Mick Scully the honorary captain. One of the high points of the season was a smashing 33 - O Homecoming win over Maryheart. The Cowboys provided thrills even in defeat, staging a strong rally at Adams before losing 26 - 20. Halfback Jim Kelley was the leading scorer, and Schoff and Bucco Nate were awarded positions on the All Diocesan second team. The Cowboys were noted for their spirit and hustle. 40 Madonna backs flow to the right on play from scrimmage. Kelley is stopped inches from paydirt after receiving pass from scrimmage. One of the highlights of the season was the Cowboys' victory over an undefeated Hillsboro team. The Cowboys, under Coach Bill Leonard's capable guidance, improved noticeably as the season progressed. This is evident from the fact that three teams who defeated the Cowboys early in the season suffered set- backs in return games. In regular season play Madonna averaged 58.7 points a game while holding their opponents to 52.2 points per game. Coach Leonard deserves a large share of the credit for the winning season. Jim Schoff's fine ball handling, Mick Scully's rebounding, and the shooting of John and Bill Shelton were also major factors in the winning season.
