Coach Harper talks over strategy with Jessie Ford gains valuable ground for Mustangs Johnny Gipson, Jessie takes off on long run against Grapeland, Coach Mac. Ricky punts out of trouble, . w I To a Vicforious Season Where 's the ball? Ford gains short yardage against Mart. In his iirst year at Madisonville, Coach Jerry Harper guided the Mustangs to their winningest season in over 10 years. The Mus- tangs finished the season with a surprisingly strong 7-3 record and a 4-2 district record that was good enough for a second place tie with Mart and Groesbeck, The Mustangs opened the season as they defeated the hosting Somerville Yeguas 28-6. The second week of the season found the Mustangs once again on the roadg this time at Tomball. The Mustangs fell to the state-ranked Cougars 27-O, The first home game of the season brought the Grapeland Sandies to town and victory number 2 as the Mustangs triumphed 13-8, The next opponent for the Mus- tangs proved to be their only breather of the season as they romped over the Trinity Tigers, 54-0, The next week found the Mustangs on the road againg this time in Centerville, to open the district season against the arch rival Tigers. After the dust had cleared, the Mustangs had convincingly beaten the hapless Tigers 27-0. The second district game of the season brought the Mart Panthers to town for one of their toughest tests of the year, It was an extremely exciting game with a field goal off the golden toe of Steve Andrews the winning margin as the Mustangs took a 9-6 victory. The most important game of the year for the local heroes came up the next week, as first place in District 21 AA was at stake when the Mustangs traveled to Rosebud-Lott. Untimely penalties and crucial fumbles plagued the Mustangs throughout the game as they came out on the short end of a 14-0 score. Homecoming found the Teague Lions at Senior Field for the eighth game of the season. Tra- dition was not to be denied as the Mustangs and Lions locked up in an extra close game that was undecided until the Mustangs held Teague in the final minutes for a 19-14 victory, After a much needed week off, the Mustangs traveled to Fairfield for the final road game of the season. Fairfield got off to an un- believable start, scoring 2 touchdowns in the first 40 seconds. The stunned Mustangs couldn't regroup in time as the Eagles held on for a 26-6 victory. The last game of the season was a must for the Mustangs if they were to finish in second place be- hind Rosebud-Lott. They played one of their finest games of the season and won over the Groesbeck Goats 14-6, assuring the Mustangs of their finest record since 1959. Woody shoots for two against Fairfield, The 1973 Mustang basketball team did not fare as well as expected, Coach Kenneth Poole's inex- perienced ponies got off to a slow start and never got more than one game above the 500 mark, Nine of the fifteen Mustang losses were to teams who won their districts. The Mustangs participated in three tourneys, Madisonville, Snook, and Centerville, winning second in their own and losing the consolation final at Snook to Marlin in an overtime, The Mustangs began and ended the district season with strong performances, but what happened in between was the Ponies' downfall, They opened the season with a strong victory at Groesbeck. But then split with Fairfield and Mart, lost two to district champion Rosebud-Lott, and to Teague, and won the second game with Groesbeck, The Mustangs also won two heated games from arch rival Centerville, including a season ending 52 to 46 come from behind victory over the Tigers.
