Practice, practice, practice! 1' The 71-'72 year was a fantastic one for the Mustang Band. They played for each pep rally and presented half-time performances at Varsity foot- ball games. The band spent many hot hours in prep aration for these performances and were rewarded with beautiful shows. During the year the Mustang Band also attended U. I. L. Marching and Concert Contests, the Fat Stock Show and Rodeo in Houston, U. I. L. Solo and Ensemble Contest, and presented seasonal concerts. The band also marched in the Huntsville and Bryan Christmas parades and the Madisonville Sidewalk Cattlemen's Association an- nual parade. The 1971 football-season for the Mustangs was somewhat below expectations, with a final record of 3-6-l. Injuries, fumbles, and penalties plagued the Mustangs continually. The first game was indicative of the season, as the Mustangs lost to a strong Somerville team 26-6. In the second game against Crockett, the Mustangs had one of their better efforts as they tied the Bulldogs 6-6. The Mustangs success continued against Grapeland as they scored with 2l seconds to go to win 14-8. The following weeks, Madisonville played poorly in losing to Centerville 32-l9 and Mart 40-O. ln the Homecoming game against high-scoring District Champion Rosebud-Lott, the Mus- tangs played the Cougars closer than any district opponent in losing 35-6. Larry Harrison saved the Mustangs next game against Teague with a spectacular run in the waning seconds of the game as Madisonville won 21-18. In the eighth game, the Mustangs demolished Lovelady 44-8 as Bruce Bailey gained 310 yards rushing. The last home game against Fairfield was an exciting contest, which the Mustangs lost 20-19 in the closing minutes. Traveling to Groesbeck in the season finale, the Mus- tangs lost a high-scoring game 42-34. 96 1, ,est i Bruce gets loose! F L F S 4 I 98 , W 1imgmi1.
