Foreu ord The purpose of the 1953 edition of the MAROON is to record the deeds of the boys and girls, who, for the past four years, embodied the spirit of Madisonville High School. In the years to come this yearbook will keep alive the mem- ories gathered during their under- graduate days. The future years will bring new faces and changes to the school scene, but there shall be this record of the friends they knew, the things they did, and the memories that are still dear to them. Time is a sort of river of passing events, and strong is its current. No sooner is a thing brought to sight than it is swept by and another takes its place, and this too will be swept away. Marcus Aurelius L 1 I pledge allegiance to Madisonville High School and to the ideals for which it stands. United by ties of friendship and loyalty, we move forward under the Maroon and Black. 2 SCHOOL PROUDLY PRESENTS Dedication The Senior class of 1953 proudly dedicates “The Maroon” to Mr. and Mrs. Harper Gatton. Each of them has served our school long and faithfully. Through Mrs. Gatton’s expert direction in our vocal department we have won many honors and much recognition — not only in the music festivals, but also in various programs in which we have par- ticipated. Mr. Gatton’s untiring, unselfish work has greatly improved our school in the thirty-eight years he served us. So, in appreciation for all they have done for us, we dedicate our 1953 “Maroon” to them. 4 ADMINISTRATION Mr. Harper Gatton, superintendent of Hopkins County Schools. Mrs. Jean Orton, secretary and treasurer of Hopkins County Board of Education. Mr. Sam B. Pollock, principal of Madisonville High School. Mrs. June Crowley, secretary to Mr. Pollock. 5 9 Mr. Vincent Zachem The busiest man at M-H-S is Mr. Vincent Zachem. Mr. Zachem came to our school in 1950 from Mayfield where he had been foot- ball coach. He received his Bachelor of Science Degree in 1943 and his Masters’ Degree in 1948 from Morehead College. Mr. Zachem has been head football coach and physical education instructor since he came to our school. To add to these duties, he was elected Principal in January, 1953. 7 %. y a Miss Eunice Bone 9th Grade Sponsor, Alge- bra, Physics, Speech. Mr. P. G. Hildreth T y T y T yT y T y T Each year for the past two years, the Princeton Kiwanis Club has sponsored a band festival in Princeton. The bands participating come from all parts of Western Kentucky and are judged on their precision marching. Madisonville High School Band has carried away first prize both times. These trophies represent a lot of hard work, but the feeling of pride we get when we look at them is worth every minute of work spent. Bright Martial Tempo Cornets WJB-2 “Our Director,” Mr. Dean Dowdy, came to Madisonville in 1934. lie has been band director at M. H. S. for nineteen years and recently took over the duties of directing the Glee Clubs. Mr. Dowdy graduated from Murray State College and received his B. Mus. E.D. Degree from there. He did post-graduate work at University of Cincinnati. Mr. Dowdy is an experinced judge in Kentucky and adjoining states. This year he has judged in Alabama, Kentucky and Illinois. He has been a guest conductor at several summer camps including Foster Music and Clear Creek. Next summer he will be on the staff of Male Hi Camp. We, the Senior Class, dedicated the Music Section of our annual to Mr. Dowdy in hopes that it will express our deepest appreciation for everything he has done. Copyrighl 1895 by Jean M. These days of football will be the subject of much conversation to the graduates and to footballers in the days to come. We, members of the graduating class, wish to thank each and every man on the team for giving to us in our Senior year such a fine team. 79 Price carries the mail. Tl e 1952-53 football curtain lias been run;; down and for several of our performers. No longer will they don the red and gray and go forth to do battle for Good old MIIS.” But these boys will go forth with more than the memories of the game. They will go away from the gridiron with better character, better understanding, with more determination and much more maturity. For football is more than the headlines, the scores, the crowds — it is a builder. It is a force which binds young men together and teaches them to work co-ordinately toward a common goal and to obtain together as a unit that which they could not obtain alone. 80 Goins skirts End in Turkey day Game Buddy Dossett Junior End Lettered one year Audra Utley Junior End Lettered one year Darrell iMoore Sophomore Tackle Lettered two years Robert Traylor Junior Guard Lettered two years Duane Kington Sophomore End Lettered two years Terry Cassidy Junior Guard Lettered one year Lowell Preston Sophomore Back Lettered one year Gary Evans Junior Tackle Lettered one year Jerry Garrard Sophomore Back Lettered one year Football Ronnie Jones Junior Guard Lettered one year Carl “Buddy” Goins Sophomore Back Lettered two years James Holdman Junior Center Lettered one year Freshman Back Lettered one year Football 81 Ed “Pete” Pidcock Senior End Lettered two years Co-captain ’52 Tom Mills Junior Guard Lettered three years Morris Yates Senior Guard Lettered four years All state Honorable Mention ’50, 1st team all state AP and CJ ’51, all WKC offence and defence ’51, Hon- orable mention All American ’51, 1st team all state CJ and Paducah Sun Demo- crat (Player of the year), 1st team all WKC offence and de- fence, 1st team All American and All Southern Bob “Stack” Steckler Senior Center Lettered 2 years Don “Lum” Edwards Junior Quarterback Lettered two years AP and CJ Monorable Mention ’51_ Ronnie Hart Junior Halfback Lettered three years Price Littlepage Junior Halfback Lettered three years Jackie “Victor” Franklin Sophomore Halfback Lettered three years Honorable mention all state WKC offencer Bill Coates Senior Tackle Lettered three years Co-captain ’53 James Miller Senior Tackle Lettered three years CJ All State 3rd team ’51, AP Honorable mention ’51, Best Blocking award ’52, 3rd team All State ’52, CJ Honorable Mention ’52 Maroon lettermen ’52 82 Basketball First Team Left to right: Jim Mitchell, Buddy Goins, Jack Smith, Dallas Cavanaugh, Duane Kington, Bill Troop, Buddy Dossett, Larry Thomas, Deno Dupree, Price Littlepage. 83 Basketball Buddy Dossett Forward pLarry Thomas L Forward Duane Kington Center Price Littlepage Guard -A Jack Smith Guard Maroons in Action WON AND LOST RECORDS Regular Season MHS 76 Trigg County 37 MHS 74 Sacramento 36 MHS 72 Earlington 63 MHS 75 Nortonville 39 MHS 66 St. Xavier 50 MHS 40 Murray 35 MHS 58 Nortonville 48 MHS 50 Henderson 43 MHS 45 Earlington 41 MHS 55 Dawson ..., 57 MHS 61 Paducah 68 MHS 70 Caverna 57 MHS 55 Bowling Green 42 MHS 80 Calhoun 40 MHS 56 Dawson 48 MHS 66 Central City 50 MHS 67 Daviess County 65 MHS 78 Providence 51 MHS 61 Princeton 37 MHS 70 Owensboro 61 Christmas Invitational MHS 68 Holy Name 56 MHS 67 Daviess Co 55 District Tournament MHS 84 Charleston 42 MHS 71 Nebo 50 MHS 73 Mortons Gap 56 Region Tournament MHS.... 67 Mortons Gap 49 MHS 70 South Christian 63 MHS 49 Iioptown 47 86 Second Team First row — left to right: Lowell Preston, Roscoe Oldham, James Walls, Johnny McLearn, Glendel Hobgood, Jerry Nance, Tommy Rodgers, Donald Hatler, Cletus Purdy, Tommy Toombs, Max Jacobs, Jerry Crumbaker.
