The Streaks make sure the Edgewood ball carrier is definetly down! 3. Keith Palmer says, “Wait a min- ute, I think I lost him. ' 4. K.C. Blystone shows the Streak determination. 5. “Let's get fired up!” 6. Glenn Potter shakes his man off as John Nicely runs to help. 7. Mark Casto drags down the oppo- nent. The Madison Bluestreaks fin- ished their football season with a 7 and 3 record that gave them a second place fin- ish in the N.E.C. Madison’s offensive efforts were led by groundgainers Glen Potter (with 708 yards), K.C. Blystone, Bill Bates, and Kenny Schiemann. The total was 2,177 yards for Madison, and the opponents had 1,148 total yards. Tim Malinowski led our pass- 18 ing game and had 29 out of 90 completions, with a total of 610 yards. Our leading receiv- er was A1 White with recep- tions totaling 182 yards. The punter, Scott Dade, had a 35 yard average. The Madison defensive efforts were led by Scott Dade and Glen Potter with 23 solo tack- les each. They were closely followed by Jim Zirkle, Bill Bates, and Bill Whitehair. The quarterback sackers were Bill Whitehair (for a total of 11), John Palmer, Steve Ka- tona, and Jim Zirkle. There were five blocked punts by Jim Zirkle. Brian Blystone John Palmer, and Doug Mor- gan. “Pm not at all surprised that our football season was suc- cessful!” exclaimed Jim Orr, sports director. The J.V. football team fin- ished with an impressive re- cord of 6 - 0 1 in the N.E.C. and 7-1-1 over all. The tough Bluestreak defense had five shut outs. The offense also proved their ability by scoring 162 points. We will be looking for team to do the same next year! 19 The marching-symphonic band is a year round activity for band students. The March- ing Streaks attended camp in Ripley, West Virginia. During winter, the marching band changes to symphonic band. These two bands are directed by Mr. Acerra and Mr. Sor- iano. Honored this year were six students chosen to play in the All Ohio State Fair Band, Mark Mitchell, John Malka- maki, Cara Cox, Letty Smith, Patti Williams and Connie Bro- berg. 1. The trumpet section keeps in step. 2. “Hey Barb, who are you looking at?” 3. Drum Major, John Zuzek, takes a rest. 4. Hut, two, three, four. 5. Wow! Look at those knees! Homecoming Victory! Hoffman Queen! 22 HOMECOMING VICTORY! The 1979-1980 football game was hosted by Madison who gave St. John the runaround. The main attraction was the crowning of homecoming queen Jaquie Hoffman. Her court included Kathy Walsh, Charlete Morrison, Angela Stubblefield and Sue Waldo. The dance was at Madison High School from 7:30-10:30. The music was provided by Lefty and the theme was Nev- er Never Land. ♦ ♦ 15 5?5S?3r 1. Tears roll as Homecoming Queen. Jacquie Hoffman receives her roses. 2. Homecoming Queen. Homecoming Court member An- gela Stubblefield, anxiously walks to her homecoming position. 23 Cross Country Boys Run Over N.E.C. Foes The boys cross country team ran away with the N.E.C. title this fall along with many other outstanding acheivements. The senior runners were Dan Jacobson, Jeff Heidnik, Rob Rupinski, and Jeff Austen. Rob Rupinski and Jeff Austen went to state competition. Rob finished in the ninth spot and Jeff in the thirtyfourth. Rob Rupinski also finished in first place at the Malone Col- lege Invitational meet. Other members were Frank Tas- cone, Brian Woerner, Rick Dame, Dave Smetters, and Dan Harrison. The team fin- ished undefeated in all dual meets. They finished third in the Malone College Invita- tional, third in the Mentor Invi- tational and second in the Per- ry Nursery Invitational. Mr. Sears, after 11 years of lead- ing the ever improving team, is retiring from the coaching position. 24 1. Coach Sears shows off his teams trophy. 2. Mr. Sears introduces his unbeaten streaks. 25 Mock Wedding - A Taste Of The Real Thing. 1. Jeff Heidnik, Shelly Hyrne. Bill Reynolds and Wary Guiser are the two lucky couples. 2. Tim Pittsenburger reads his lines during the ceremony. 3. Jeff Heidnik and Shelly Hyrne lis- ten to the marriage vows. 4. The flower girls enjoy the ceremo- ny. 5. The Priest performes the ceremo- ny. 6. The rings used to seal the the wed- ding vows. 7. Now for the big moment! STUDENTS TIE THE KNOT? Marriage and Family class held a mock wedding. After the two couples were wed by a certified Priest, a reception was held. The ceremony was a taste of the real thing and it gave a true to life picture of “the big day” for the class. The girls Bluestreak volleyball team, had another successful season. Coached by Miss Chris Anderson, they finished second in the N.E.C. with 11 wins, 3 losses, and withl3 wins, 6 losses over all. The varsity team was led by sen- iors, Sally Crawford, Delynn Markham, Pam North, Jenny Smith, Lisa Gibbon, Shelly Hyrne and Marie Moss, ju- niors. Kara Cox and Michelle Horvath. Sally Crawford and Pam North, both Starting set- ters, were honored by being placed on the first team N.E.C. The junior varsity squad had a rebuilding season, finishing with a 3-11 record in the con- ference. The team consisted of juniors, Kelly Coleman, Shar- on Kepes, Lisa Potti, Heidi Robinson, Barb CJphole, and freshman Bev Bugbee, Nancy Collingwood, Kristi Cox, Deb- bie Kuklinski, Shelly Paquin and Kim Galloway. 1. Delynn Markham dinks for a point. 2. Captain Pam North, serves the way. 3. Bluestreaks patiently wait for the ball. 4. Delynn Markham spikes high over blockers. 5. Jenny Smith spikes another while teammates cover, 29 Girls Field Hockey Reaches Their Goal! The girls field hockey team finished with 6 wins and 5 losses, this fall. The J.V. team also finished well, with a 3-5 1 record thanks to three year coach, Kevin Morgan. The var- sity team seniors were Rox- anne Ruland, Kathy Incorvati, Michelle Kovalchik, Sue Misch, Sue Cooper and Mary Sammet. This year the Streaks, for the first year, par- ticipated in the state meet. They lost their first game (3-0) to the team that finished eighth in the state. 2 30 1. Denise Kovalchik attempts to hit the ball past defenders. 31 Golf Team Swings Through The Season This years golf team consist- ed of a great group of golfers, who stuck together as a team. Not all the matches were won, but their team spirit more than made up for the losses. This years record was 3 wins, 13 losses, and 1 tie. The team came in sixth in the N.E.C. 32 1. BELOW: Our 1979 winter sports teams. 68 In Memory Of Steve Calvert STEVEN W. CALVERT April 21. 1962 November 22. 1978 Wrestlers Are Perfect In N.E.C. The Streaks finished the sea- son in first place. The team placed seven firsts in the N.E.C. tournament, they are as follows: Jeff Notte, Iain Gilchrist. Bill Bates. Bill Whi- tehair. Jack Scott, Brett Ben- nett, and John Palmer. The rest of the Varsity team are: Ted Bilski, Brian Widlits, Jim Tamborski, Ken Ciamaichella. Kevin Wirfel, and Doug Mor- gan. Coach, Mr. Melin, feels that he has a fine senior squad, and that he will miss them. But he has assured us that the up- coming boys will fill their shoes nicely. Madison finished third in the district meet. Bill whitehair was our only first place man but we have eight going to the finals. John Palmer sets up for the kill! 74 Roundball Season Has Its Ups And Downs Streaks Get “Hot” In Mid Season The 1979 ■ 80 edition of the Bluestreak basketball team got off to a creeping start, opening their season with losses to district powers North, Lake Catholic, and Kenston, “The young Streaks faced the toughest schedule in the history of the school, remarked coach.” Mr. Dolan. “The most exciting game of the year had to be the come from behind, 70 • 69 vic- tory over the Euclid team”. The Streaks then came alive in January, winning 6 out of 7 games. Leading scorers for this year were captains Mark Naughton and Greg Koski. The rest of the varsity team included Ed Reed, Glenn Potter, Todd Peine, Tim Pittsenbarger, Ke- vin DiPofi, Tim Malinowski and Tom Solden. The Active J.V. players Todd Kingery, T.J. Paguin, Tony Ruta, John White. Mitch Warholic, Mike Bollas, and Greg Morrison. The Freshmen ended with a 7 - 7 record. 76 1. Kevin DiPofi lays one in for two! 2. Carolyn Wirfel takes advantage of the fast break. Good Season This year the girls varsity bas- ketball team, coached by Miss Phillips, ended their season with 10 wins and 10 losses. Standouts this year were sen- iors, Mickey Jones with 183 points and 46 steals, and Jen- ny Smith grabing down 165 rebounds. Sophmore, Sue Palmer had the highest team foul shot average, shooting 53 percent. The rest of the team included. Seniors: Carolyn Wirfel, and Sandy Daughters. Juniors: Lisa Potti, Lisa Da- vis, Michelle Horvath and Kim Jones. Sophmores: Kamy Martin, and Tracy Rooks. The J.V. team finished with a perfect N.E.C. record, 14-0, and 14-4 overall. They were led by first year coach, Mrs. Newby. Tracy Watson had 198 points and Sue Evans had 178 rebounds. 79 Best Wishes to the Class of ’80. Sue Waldo, Beth Kurilla, Carol Amos, Charlette Morrison, and Moni- ca Narah are this years varsity cheer- leaders. 2. The cheerleaders pose in one of their many popular mounts. In Memory Of Teresa Alley June 20,1962-December 15, 1979 Carol Alley August 12, 1963-December 15, 1979 John Meivogel September 17, 1962-February 23. 1980 95 Bands Go BANDS SPREAD THEIR MUSIC. The stage band performs jazz and pop instrumental playing. The band performs all year at local school functions and guest appearances outside our school. This band participated in the Lakeland Jazz Festival where bands from all over Northeastern Ohio gather to perform. Mr. Acerra is the director for the stage band, and symphon- Ic band. Mr. Soriano is the as- sistant director for these bands. The Symphonic Band is the same group of people as marching band. During the concert season, this band plays at the Christmas con- cert, at Commencement and plays a Spring concert. The band represents Madison High in the OMEA Contests for band and solo and ensemble players, this makes for a very busy school year. 1. Stage Band poses for their pretty picture. 2. Am I playing the right notes? 99 Choir Spreads Their Music The choirs and ensembles had a busy year. In December, they joined the band for the Christmas Concert. Mrs. Braunlich is the advi- sor of the Madison Chapter. All juniors and seniors who have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 are eligible for membership. The members then are chosen by their character, leadership and service. Once chosen by a vote of the faculty, each mem- ber is expected to maintain these standards. 1. FHA girls are deciding what their next project will be. 106 A.F.S. Plans To Sponsor Three Students The A.F.S. Club has been busy raising money to send students abroad and to bring foreign stu- dents here to Madison. They have been collecting money every Wednes- day morning. They call it “Penny Wednesday.” In the first semester they raised $1,000.00 which paied for the A.F.S. international mem- bership. Next year, they will sponsor three students at Madison. The A.F.S. club officers are president; Denise Janeczek, vice-president; Tom Solden, Treasurer; Norm Smyke, Secretary; Gina Billy and the advisor, Mrs. Stefancic. 107 German Camp, A Great Experience! A proposal that a language camp experience be held for Madison German students, was put into affect a few years ago. Every May German stu- dents gather at Camp Klein, in Concord Township, for a se- ries of interesting events. The idea was developed by the club advisor, Mr. Strothers. A three day camp is held and the culture and language studied. Those that cannot afford to travel abroad gain some ex- perience of German life through this club. This is the third year for the program which has enjoyed great suc- cess. 108 Culture, Language, Geography-French The French Club this year has furthered the knowledge of the French language, culture, and geography in exciting ways. It has offered an opportunity to learn the customs by exper- iencing them. The club is con- cerned with the community, visiting nursing homes and participating in civic affairs. The clubs advisor is Mrs. Strothers, President, Jeff Ha- gan, V.P., Larry Hennessey, Secretary, Jackie Masters, and Barb Butcher treasurer. 109 The Spanish Life Of Madison High School The Spanish Club has been busy this year with their ac- tivities. They began by selling high school pennants. During the winter, they held a Christ- mas party with Santa Claus and they broke Pinatas. They also have gone roller skating. They hope to use their money to go to Cedar Point in June. The club is lead by Mrs. Ste- fancic and the officers are. President, Ken Lowthian, Vice-President, Aaron Chil- bert. This years pep club gave the school a lot of support throughout the sports seasons. They performed skits at the pep assemblies and they made hall spirit post- ers. To promote Godspell, the cast clowns went out to schools and area businesses. Even though they were given strange looks, they enjoyed every minute of it. The boys baseball team fin- ished first place in the N.E.C. for the second year in a row, finishing with an outstanding team batting average of .318. The varsity team was led by seniors, Ken Solden (batting .455), Jeff Cody, and all N.E.C. winners, Gregg Lyons and Jim DiPofi, and most valuable player in the N.E.C. Jeff Lakatos, whose pitching record was 7-1. Junior Bill Whitehair, was also all N.E.C. contributing two home runs. The Bluestreaks finished in first place at the Harvey Invi- tational. The proud coach, George Opron states. “We are at the top of our conference in respectability. We must re- place five pitchers lost by graduation, but we will still be tough!” 172 The Softball Team Swings Into Victory The girls softball team had a record of 12 wins and 5 losses in the ’79 season. They placed third in the N.E.C. Candy Saunders and Micky Jones made the N.E.C. first team. Sally Crawford, Kelee Booth and Diane Henrietta made the N.E.C. second team. Honor- able mentions went to Mary Tarbuck and Jean Coope. Ke- lee Booth led the team with 27 RBI’s and 4 homeruns. Candy Saunders led the league with 33 stolen bases. Sally Craw- ford had only two errors in 87 innings at play. Mickey Jones led the team with a .636 bat- ting average. Coach Miss Sal- ly Phillips says “The team really improved thruout the season with fine pitching from Jean Cooper and outstanding play and leadership by seniors Candy Saunders (outfield), and Kelee Booth (second base).” 1. Mary Tarbuck smashes one to- ward the outfield. 175 79 Track Breaks Some Records The track team had a record of 5 wins and 2 losses. Jeff Heidnik set a record in the low hurdles. Jon Austen placed first in the mile, 880, and 2 mile runs. Larry Jopko set a record in the pole vault. Other standouts were: Rob Rupinski • mile, Jeff Austen - 880, Mike Leone 220 100, and Frank Tascone • 2 mile. Outstanding prospects for the future are: John White. Joe Booth, Brian Woerner, Brent Woerner, Phil Garbark, Dave Zapp, and Steve Toth. 177 Girls Track Stars For 1979 1. Roxane Ruland was honored for breaking the school record for the discus. 2. Jamie Sulzbock was also honored for coming in third place in the mile in the sectional meet. 3. Monica Nahra was the sectional Champion in the long jump. She also came in forth place in the district in the long jump and a state qualifier. NEC Champs 1. Mile Relay team consist of Sue Jopho, Sue Ingle, Jamie Sulzbock and Kim Horvath. 2. 880 relay team consist of Monica Nahra. Kim Saba. Laury Smith. Sue Jopho. 3. Jamie Sulzbock came in in the mile. 4. Drama Club Awards Performances In the Madison High, Drama Club Awards ceremony this year, 13 students were award- ed for their performances. Mike Cooper for his work as Adam in The Apple Tree and Student Director for Ask Any Girl; Heidi Quiggle as Passion- ella in The Apple Tree and Meg in Ask Any Girl: Kathy Damm as graduating senior who made the most contribu- tion over the four-year period. The band “Hott” played from 7:30 to 11:30 while a buf- fet dinner was being served. The main event was the crowning of King, Jim Au- mick, and Queen, Brenda Or- ris. Building Repair and Maintance which includes a building of a home, training in Computer Technology, Law lnforcement, Graphics and Dental Hygiene are offered. In addition Welding, Machine Trades and Electronics are part of the program. All courses provide on the job training during the senior year.
