Football “78” — Almost Tops. After losing the Little Brown Jug trophy in a close game of 28-31 to Perry in the first game of the season, our determined varsity football team moved up to take second in the North- eastern Conference by defeating St. John, Riverside, Harbor, Ashtabula City, and Conneaut. One of the memorable games for different reasons was the Riverside Homecoming Game. While we had a big win, the game was ended with the River- side coach having a heart attack. This was just one of the strange events of a very different sea- son. Several football players were accorded individual honors this fall for outstanding achieve- ments. Bob Orr was selected as the most valuable offensive player in N.E.C., 1st Team All Lake County and 1st Team All News Herald. He was also selected for 1st Team Northeast Associated Press and received an All State Special Mention. Bill Whitehair also made 1st Team N.E.C. and 1st Team All County, along with 2nd Team News Herald. Jim Zirkel and John Wargelin both made 1st Team All County and 2nd Team N.E.C. Greg Elder, who was chosen for 1st Team N.E.C., was also given a News Herald Special Mention. Players cho- sen for 2nd Team N.E.C. in- cluded Greg Lyons, Scott Dade, Mark Brandt, Dave Black and Ken Blystone. Jim DiPofi, Scott Clark, Joel Gibbon, Bill Bates, Rick Fenton and Glen Potter were awarded N.E.C. Honor- able Mentions.
