After losing the Little Brown Jug trophy in a close game of 28-31 to Perry in the first game of the season, our determined varsity football team moved up to take second in the North- eastern Conference by defeating St. John, Riverside, Harbor, Ashtabula City, and Conneaut. One of the memorable games for different reasons was the Riverside Homecoming Game. While we had a big win, the game was ended with the River- side coach having a heart attack. This was just one of the strange events of a very different sea- son. Several football players were accorded individual honors this fall for outstanding achieve- ments. Bob Orr was selected as the most valuable offensive player in N.E.C., 1st Team All Lake County and 1st Team All News Herald. He was also selected for 1st Team Northeast Associated Press and received an All State Special Mention. Bill Whitehair also made 1st Team N.E.C. and 1st Team All County, along with 2nd Team News Herald. Jim Zirkel and John Wargelin both made 1st Team All County and 2nd Team N.E.C. Greg Elder, who was chosen for 1st Team N.E.C., was also given a News Herald Special Mention. Players cho- sen for 2nd Team N.E.C. in- cluded Greg Lyons, Scott Dade, Mark Brandt, Dave Black and Ken Blystone. Jim DiPofi, Scott Clark, Joel Gibbon, Bill Bates, Rick Fenton and Glen Potter were awarded N.E.C. Honor- able Mentions. 1. Bill Whitehair and Jeff Sines bring down a Kenston runner. 2. Crystal Dawn And “Lights Go Down In City” This year’s homecoming dance was held in the high school cafeteria from 8-11 p.m. Couples danced to the music provided by Crystal Dawn. The scenery and dec- orations depicted the theme “When the Lights Go Down in the City”. Senior Class President David Black crowned Queen Sandi Snyder at the exciting game the night before, in which we beat Conneaut 27-26. The court consisted of Joan Baron, Jean Hoffman, Won Sang Lee and Brenda Orris. 1. The band, Crystle Dawn, played to the theme “When the Lights Go Down in the City”. 2. In addition to a full summer schedule of re- hearsals and parades, the band made its yearly trip to Ripley, West Virginia for five days of intensive work. On their return, the band played at all football half- time shows, three invitational festivals and one contest, where they placed first on parade and second on field competition. 1. Our 1978 boys’ cross coun- try team finished with an overall record of 7 and 1, second in the N.E.C. One of the highlights of this year’s season was a 3rd place finish at the Malone College Invitational, where they competed against twenty two teams. Although the team did not qualify, Rob Repinski, Jeff Austin and Jon Austin went on to the district meet. Both Rob and Jeff qualified for the state meet. Rob finished 8th in the state with a time of 12:19 over a two and one half mile course. Jeff also turned in a fine performance, finishing 40th in a time of 12:53. 24 4 1. Field Hockey Has Rebuilding Season Composed mainly of freshmen, sophomores and juniors, the girls’ field hockey team com- peted against some outstanding teams. Most of the games were against schools in the greater Cleveland area. Although the overall score was one win, six losses and two ties, the outstanding de- fense seldom let the opposing team make more than one or two goals. The highlight of the season was a 3-0 win over Andrews School for Girls. 1. Sue Misch takes the ball from the opposition as Julie Burdette comes up short to follow play. 2. Overall, the Streaks were 11-4, defeating Mentor in sectional tournaments before losing to district final- ist Eastlake North. The varsity team made a proud showing in placing Mary Tarbuck on the N.E.C. first team, Kathy Moss and Pam North on the second team N.E.C. and Sally Craw- ford and Jayne Anderson on the honorable mention list. The varsity squad included: Mary Tarbuck, Kathy Moss, Sally Crawford, Pam North, Jayne Anderson, Delynn Markham, Robin Lanning, Marie Moss, Jean Cooper and Jenny Smith. Having no starter over 6’2’ the Blue Streak bas- ketball them was able to out rebound the opponent in all but two of their exciting eigh- teen game schedule. The starting line-up usual- ly included Scott Booth and Tony Naughton at the guard spots, Ken Solden and Greg Koski at the forward spots, and Jeff Cody at the center spot. The back up strenghts find Jim DiPofi at the point spot, Mark Naughton and Dave Black at the wing guard spots, Glenn Potter and Mitch Nahra at the low for- ward spots, and Gordie Smith or Todd Peine in the center post spot. The Streaks played before the largest crowds in the his- tory of our gym. The average crowd numbered about 1100 fans with peaks of 2000 for the last three home contests. Peaks of the season were the fantastic double victories over the Geneva Eagles, who somehow ended up winner of the League championship. The Streaks also defeated Ashtabula City twice, another first for our school, and finished runner-up in the league with a 11-3 school record and a 13-5 over all season. Leading the passing attack was 6M” senior Tony Naugh- ton, who broke our school record for assists per game, with 14 in the 67-63 win over Geneva. Jeff Cody and Ken Solden averaged around 20 points a game for the entire season. Ken has set several records in his three years of varsity playing. Greg Koski had several exciting games, high- lighted with a last second 25 foot jump shot to defeat Euclid High in our opening sectional tournament. Scott Booth played tenacious de- fense all season, holding Brad Gee of Conneaut to six points, knocking them out of the league title. The team’s fantastic per- formances all year helped the sixth year coach, Jim Do- lan, to be named Regional Press Coach of the Year in the Lake County area. Our ninth grade team was co-champ of the league with a 11-2 record, and our J.V. team was 11-7. 1. Girls Season Highlighted By Eastlake Upset Our girls’ basketball team started the season with a well played game against Lake Catholic, which they lost by only three points. The next two were easy victories. A rough loss to Geneva was followed by seven wins. One outstanding game to an over- flow crowd at Geneva over- came the early loss and was an outstanding effort, which gained us a second place to Geneva in league play. A disappointing loss to Harbor ended our losing ways. There was a close win over Ash- tabula, and two easy ones brought us to the game of the year against Eastlake North, third ranked in the state, where a great effort saw a 62-45 victory for the Streaks and a great 15-3 season end. The team was comprised of several outstanding girls. Mary Tarbuck won News Herald Player of the Week, 1st team N.E.C., and All Lake County. Karen Cicenas was selected for the Cleve- land Plain Dealer Dream Team. Miss Phillips is justly proud of her girls, who put forth some real effort this year. The team was made up of Karen Cicenas (captain and leading rebounder), Kathy Moss, Mary Tarbuck (cap- tain, leading scorer, best foul shooter, most assists, most steals), Sandy Daugh- ters, Colleen Haase, Micky Jones, LeeAnn Ortiz, Jenny Smith, Kim Saba, Carolyn Wirfel, and Lisa Potti. 1. Karen Cicenas rebounds the ball from our Geneva opponents. 2. The mighty Blue Streaks go for another two points. 3. Mary Tar- buck shoots for a long shot. 4. Karen Cicenas tries for another shot. 5. Karen Cicenas never fails Madison with her jump shots. 79 Wrestling Team Has Undefeated Season. Our varsity wrestling team had another strong season this year, finishing 12-0 over- all and 6-0 in N.E.C. meets. This year they avenged last year’s loss to Riverside by beating them 25-20. Unfortu- nately, Madison lost the conference tournament by a narrow margin to River- side, since they had slightly more depth. In addition to N.E.C. meets our team met Chardon, Wickliffe, East- lake North, West Geauga and Kenston. The J.V.s, who often filled in for varsity players that were injured or sick, finished 7-4-1 overall and 4-2 in all N.E.C. meets. Outstanding wrestlers were Jeff Notte (12-0), Scooter Darnell (10-0), Jim Aumick (12-0), Jack Scott (6-0) and Bret Bennett (11-0). 80 1. Bill Whitehair checks on the time during his match. 2. Symphonic Band Plays The Best Music In Town When marching season ends, the band comes indoors to play serious concert music. This band participates in con- cert band festivals, local and school concerts, and the dis- trict and state music con- tests. There is a serious attempt to play difficult music well and to maintain a high level of playing. This year the band also participated in exchange concerts with other schools. 1. She has come to the high school after several years’ work in the middle schools, where her groups received acclamation from the community. The choir schedules prefor- mances in the fall, winter, and spring. They gave a Christmas concert at Randal Park Mall and are planning to attend the county music contest and festival. Mrs. Mullen is also the direc- tor of the mixed choir, which is composed of those who desire choir experience and wish to perform with the senior choir. The choral ensemble consists of selected mem- bers who enjoy performing alone. Senior Choir Brings Melody To The School. 1. Senior choir rehearses for an up- coming festival. 2. Under the direc- tion of Mrs. Eaglen, there were many people who parti- cipated in the drama club's production. The Gong Show started out with a bang with our emcee, Mr. Leitch, who came straight from the mathe- matics department. Mr. (African Ape) Hanes, Mr. (as himself) Linhart, and Mr. (Conehead) Morgan handled the important job of being judges. They had a difficult time deciding on the win- ners. Mike Cooper took first by a great magic trick. Jack- lyn Masters danced her way into second place, while Pam North and Jean Cooper were right down on the farm when they received third. 1. Braunlich is the advi- sor of the Madison Chapter of the National Honor Soc- iety, which plans induction for March 20, 1979. Unfortu- nately, this date is too late to have the new members pictured in this yearbook. All juniors and seniors who have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 are eli- gible for membership, which is then based on character. leadership and service. Once chosen by a vote of the facul- ty, each member is expected to maintain these standards that were used as a basis for his election. 106 A.F.S. Gives Students A Chance To Go Abroad Their main objective was to make the student body and community aware of the program and to raise the necessary funds to bring a foreign exchange student to Madison next fall. The club sponsored a short term exchange with Roga, a student from Iceland presently attend- ing Ashtabula Harbor, and Jose, a boy from Spain now at Kirtland High. To be considered a possible exchange student one must be a junior who has taken at least one year of a foreign language and maintained a B average. The candidate must also be voted on by the Madison chapter. We have two possible students chosen from Madison to go abroad this summer. This year our American Field Service chapter was reactivated after several years of inactivity. H. HOR TON CO. 6326 N. Ridge West Madison, Ohio Best Wishes to the Class of 1979 1. These activities include meetings, skiing trips, and German camps. The meetings, held at members’ homes, can increase one’s vocabulary and expand his knowledge of life in Germany by talking to people who have either visited or lived there. Skiing trips give one the opportunity to ex- experience one of Germany’s most popular pastime activities. Mr. Strother, the German club advisor, organized the first “Bundesrepublik Brinda- ban” (German camp) four years ago. This year for the first time a fall camp was held for ad- vanced speaking students. These twenty-five students attended classes taught completely in German, played German soccer, and part- icipated in a variety of other activities for the two days they visited Camp Klein. A spring camp is planned for June, which will allow the students who did not attend the fall camp to develop their conversational skills in a more relaxed atmosphere where English and German will be permitted. 108 ART TAYLOR STUDIO INC. Work on the Cauldron be- gins in July and is not ceased until the final yearbook is distributed in June. During the summer the members of the Cauldron staff solicit advertising to businesses in Madison and neighboring com- munities to cover the cost of color pages. From September until March layouts must be made, photographs must be taken and identified, and copy must be written and typed before it can be sent to the publisher to meet the set deadlines. When the yearbooks arrive in late May or early June, they must be protected with plastic covers and passed out to the students anxiously awaiting to see the result of the staffs persis- tent labor. With three of the eight students who meet with Mr. Heichel fourth period grad- uating (Dale Crawford, Ed Giunca and Brenda Miller) new members are needed to complete next year’s staff. Working on the Cauldron not only gives one practical experience in putting out an actual publication but also provides the opportunity to contribute to something which will be valued by many for many years. 112 1. They meet once a week to discuss matters per- taining to our school. At these meetings they plan a variety of different activities and orga- nize student exchanges between our school and others to give stu- dents the opportunity to see how other schools function. At Christ- mas the student council collected food for the needy to make their Christmas a little merrier. Club mem- bers demonstrated their generosity, industry, relia- bility, leadership and service in several ways this year. “Slave Day” was on the calen- dar once again when the girls were auctioned off before school to the highest bidder. With the proceeds of “Slave Day” the club donated twenty dollars to each of three needy families at Christmas. Among their other activities they sponsored a Valentine’s Day Dance, a Powder Puff Basket- ball Game, and struggled to remainsilent on “Hush Day”. New members are chosen each spring by the existing members, and initiation takes place two days later. Mrs. Lee is the G.I.R.L.S. Club advisor. Key Club Serves The Community 1. G.I.R.L.S. The Key Club, under the direction of Mr. Haines, is sponsored by the Kiwanis Club of Madison. This has been the first year that the club has been open to all stu- dents who have wished to join. To become a member one must go through initiation, which this year included dres- sing up as a cheerleader and preforming in front of the student body during a pep assembly. Once in the Key Club one must maintain a good grade point average and earn service points, which can be attained by participat- ing in the club’s projects, to retain membership. The Key Club used money they raised by holding a car wash and sponsoring a dance to provide needy families of the community with food bas- kets at Christmas. The club also plans to donate a trophy case to the resource center. Drama Club: Apple Tree And Gong Show. 118 The drama club kept us entertained throughout an- other year by several light- hearted productions. The “Gong Show” has become an annual event, and this year it was not only amusing, but amazing. “The Apple Tree”, a musical comedy divided into two parts, “Adam and Eve”, and “Pas- sionella”, was presented in January. “Adam and Eve” depicted life as it first was, showing the tenderness and warmth of their relationship. The zany “Passionella” was a take off on “Cinderella”. A spring play is planned, but has not as yet been selected. Ms. Eaglen, the drama club advisor, is also respon- sible for choosing the stu- dents to read the morning announcements, which are forever embedded into our minds. Check Out The Chess Club Handkerchiefs The chess club begins meet- ing in the early part of Octo- ber and continues until the latter part of March. This year about Fifteen members met with Mr. Winfield every Wednesday for about two hours after school to play chess and show each other new moves. The highlight of the season was a third place finish in the Geneva Relays. The team had only two graduating seniors; Tom Shu- maker and Bill Orr. Tom was an outstanding sprinter and led the team in scoring. Bill was a high jumper and also ran on the relay teams. Two other outstanding performers were Gary Skoch and Larry Jopko in the pole vault. Larry eventually went on to set a new school record of thirteen feet, six inches. Most of the team was comprised of sophomores and juniors, so we can expect a bright future. 145 Girls Track - The girls’ track team qualified for the state meet for the fourth consecutive year in 1978. Qualifiers for the district meets included Jamie Sulzbach in the mile and the 880 relay, Kim Saba in the shot put, and Jackie Kloes in the high jump.
