After many years of com- munity donations and ardu- rous fund raising, the March- ing Blue Streaks were able to purchase new uniforms. The band began the year with a five day camp in Ripley, West Virginia. There they learned the footwork and per- fected the music to the first two half-time shows and a pre-game. In addition to playing at football games and making an album, the band partici- pated in seven band-o-ramas. 14 1. The 1977-78 Band Council. First of all, the team was introduced to a new coach — Mr. Orr. Coach Orr set many goals for our young and growing team. A great part of life is working and struggling to succeed, only to find that, along the road to success, there are pitfalls which falter us briefly and cause us to pick ourselves up, regroup, and continue goalward. This is Coach Orr's philosophy, and this is how he held his team, our team, together this year. Our team faced obstacles and outrageous odds each week, but kept on meeting the challenges of individual, team, and program improve- ment. This year's team has started the firm foundation from which future teams can grow. The most important factor achieved by this year's Blue Streak football squad was not the 1-9 won-lost record, but the post 1-9 attitude that remains. The rebuilding of the erosion of the attitude and morale over the past years is now in the process of happening, and with Coach Orr's idea of creating a high morale for future develop- ment, it looks as though Madi- son can again become a league contender. 1. The theme of this year's Homecoming was Dreams . The cafeteria was decorated in silver, gold, and dark and light blue. The couples en- joyed dancing to the band Coco from 8-11 p.m. The crowning of Queen Karen Bates was the highlight of the evening. The queen was Homecoming. crowned with a floral crown by the senior class president, Steve Woodworth. The queen's court consis- ted of Sue Bowen (escorted by Sam Britton), Tracy Bowers (escorted by Brian Fowler), Diane D'Abate (escorted by Chris Cicenas) and Jackie Kloes (escorted by Mark Girton). All of the couples enjoyed a fun evening of entertain- ment and dancing. Cross Country Strides Through Under the coaching of Mr. Sears and Mr. Anderson, the cross country team finished 2nd in the N.E.C. Leading the way in the meet were Rob Rupinski and Jon Austin, who finished 3rd and 8th respect- ively. Rob and Jon also made it to district competition. The team finished the year with a 4-3 record. This record could have easily been 6-1 since two of the meets were lost by only one or two points. The team attended the Mentor Invitational, where they placed 4th, the Univer- sity School Invitational, where they placed 6th, and the Ma- lone Invitational, where the team finished 2nd out of 26 teams and brought home a well deserved trophy that they presented to the school The varsity team consisted of seniors Rick Bilski and Tom Shumaker; juniors Jon Austin, Byron Edwards, and Jim Aumick; sophomores Rob Rupinski and Jeff Austin; and freshman Frank Tascone. Stats for this year were Judy Stewart, Mary Sammet, Mary Beth Myers, and Cheri Woodworth. The J.V. team also finished the season with a winning rec- ord of 6-1. Winning Year. 1 1. Champions at the Kenston In- vitational, the girls' cross country team came in second at the Cloverleaf and Chagrin Falls In- vitational, third at the Willough- by South and Dover Invitationals, and fourth at the Wadsworth In- vitational and the All-Ohio meet. Jamie Sulzbach was third or better in all but two major meets and was the individual champion at the Kenston Invitational. There were only two seniors on the team; Nancy McDonald and Jackie Kloes. Others who were awarded letters were Sandy Hull, Karen Cicenas, Colleen Kohler, Jamie Sulzbach, and Polly Gibbon. The J.V. team consisted of sophomores Kris Michelson, Laurie Smith, and Angela Stubblefield. Next year five of the top runners will be returning for another season and they hope to qualify for the state cross country meet. Golf Team Goes Through Rough Season. 26 The golf team struggled through a rough and wet season this year. Playing in bad weather all year, the team managed to pull an upset over Riverside, a state contender last year. The varsity golfers repre- senting the school this year were senior Dennis Rave; jun- iors Dave Isaac, Greg Quirk, Joe Paquin, and Dennis Smith; sophomore Bill McGee; and freshman Bill Hoffman. The team came close to winning the district title, but lost to Mentor in a district game that was very close. The varsity team consisted of Karen Bates, Kathy Pollock, Mary Tarbuck, Kathy Moss, Jane Anderson, Brenda Orris, Sally Crawford, Sue York, and Pam North. They were coached by Miss Anderson. The J.V. team had a little rougher time and came up with a 6-8 record. The team should have an- other good season next year, since only two seniors are on the varsity squad. 29 Field Hockey Opens Season With New Coach. 30 This year's field hockey team showed vast improvement as the season went on. They fin- ished their season with a rec- ord of one win and four losses. Co-captains were seniors Jan Aumick and Sue Bowen. This year the girls had a new coach, Mr. Morgan. This was his first year in coaching field hockey. The forward line included Tammy Watson, Terri Incor- vati, Michelle Kovalchik, Jan Aumick, Sue Bowen, and Barb Perry. Team halfbacks were Anne Sency, Kay Malinowski, and Roxanne Ruland. At full- back were Kelly Booth, Kim Walker, and goalie Anne Juist. Steve scored 31 points. They followed up with an impressive 88-77 win over Wickliffe Blue Devils. Steve again scored 33 and Ken Solden followed up with 22 points. The remainder of the season was exciting with many close games but not the victories the players or coach- es would have liked. The scor- ing was led by Ken Solden, John Parker and Jeff Cody for the most part. The rebounding was led by Ken Solden, Jeff Cody, and Greg Koski. The ball handling chores were handled by three hustling guards; Dave Koski, Tim Elliott, and Tony Naughton. The brightest part of the season was probably the development of the young ball players. One freshman, two sophomores, and five juniors were on the varsity team at the close of the season. It looks like the Streaks are building another champion- ship team. I. John Parker adds two with a quick hook shot. 2. Steve Rozick overcomes the opposition for two more points. 3. Craig Holibaugh tries to outstretch his opponent for the rebound. 4. The varsity team consisted of senior Linda Anderson; juniors Mary Tarbuck, Karen Cicenas, and Kathy Moss; sophomores Lee Ann Ortiz, Jenny Smith, Carolyn Wirfel, Sandy Daughters, Mickey Jones, Pam North, and Mary Baron. The team was basically in a rebuilding year, with a very young team. With only one starter graduating, we can look forward to another good season next year. How- ever, our winning streak of 28 N.E.C. dual matches in a row came to an end with Riverside beating us in a 28-23 heart- breaker. The team also bowed to Riverside in the N.E.C. tour- nament. Riverside finished 19! 2 points in front of Mad- ison, who sorely missed 138 pounder Tom Lasko, who was out with a broken leg. Taking first places in the tournament were; Jeff Notte at 98, Scooter Darnell at 126, Jim Aumick at 132, Bill Whitehair at 145, Rick Booth at 155, and Scott Clark at 185. Rich Carlisle placed sec- ond while Jack Scott and Dave Paratto finished 3rd and 4th respectively in their weight classes. Jeff Notte maintained the only perfect record this year on the team. He was followed closely by Scooter Darnell and Rich Carlisle, who only lost once. Tfle auzvit ta e c yur FULL SERVICE BANK Soriefu 4 BANK PAINESVILLE A SOCIETY CORPORATION BANK Snow Days; Strike - Vacation This year's first semester seemed to continue on and on. There were several factors responsible for this unending semester. First of all, there was the teachers' strike. The teachers' strike ran a total of four days. During these four days a system was set up to accomodate those students that found a way to school. With the bus drivers and food service personnel honoring the teachers' picket lines, students were responsible for their own transportation to school and providing their own lunches. Another important factor was the weather element. This year nature has left her fury upon us in the form of blizzards. This winter has un- doubtedly been one of Madison's worst. A total of seven days were dismissed as snow days . During these snow days many of us were caught within our homes, un- able to conquer winter's fury. So, a total of eleven days were taken away from school during the first semester. If you add Christmas vacation along with these eleven days, it seems as though the first semester took so much longer to end. If this trend should continue, school may con- tinue longer in future years. What lies ahead for future school years is placed at the mercy of Mother Nature and any other outside forces which may hamper the con- tinuity of the school year. 198 Memories of our high school days Will linger in our thoughts and ways We'll remember how it used to be And reminisce quite frequently. Time has yet to pave our way As we live from day to day. We'll look back, and then we'll see Our high school years as memories.
