CAULDRON ■ PUBLISHED BY: MADISON MEMORIAL HIGH SCHOOL EAST MAIN STREET MADISON,OHIO A memorable year at Madison. It is the hope of the Cauldron Staff that this book will be a record of your past year at Madison. We have tried our best to include all of the activities and accomplishments which have occurred. This has been a memorable year at Madison, with many things happening, but everything must come to an end. We hope that this book will hold many memories for you and add that extra something to make your year complete. We are sure that your year has been a profitable year as has ours. Our foreign exchange student, Hilary Bell, will now be leaving us. We are sad to see her go, but we hope that she has enjoyed her year at Madison as much as we have enjoyed having her. We have all profited by knowing her and we hope this book will recall many fond memories for her and all who read it. I am Madison's first foreign exchange student. My home is Bristol, England. As a student ambassador of my country, I hope you have received as good an impression of my country as I have of yours. I came over on a program called the A.F.S. — American Field Serv- ice, which began in 1914 in France during World War I. The American Hospital there gave its aid and contributed ambulances while American students living in France volunteered their work with them for the French army. At first they only fought on the battle fields in the North Front, but as the organization expanded they worked on all the fronts. It again became active in World War II, working not only in France but in Burma, North Africa, and Italy. Soon it was realized that as these different nations worked together they established understanding and respect between themselves. After the war it was decided to con- tinue this international feeling of good will by bringing foreign students to America, whereby personal contact, this understanding and respect could grow; helping to promote world peace. In 1947 only 17 students participated in this program, this year however, over 3000 foreign students came to America from 59 dif- ferent nations, and altogether 29,172 young people have taken part, or are now taking part in these A.F.S. Scholarships, so you can see why I am proud to be a part of it. England is only 400 miles long and in places less than 200 miles wide. I live in the South Country, down in the Southwestern peninsula. Bristol was at one time a very important part, but its shipping industry has declined and she trades mainly in tobacco, wine, and chocolate and now also airplanes. I come from a family of five. My father is a Valuation officer in the Civil Service, and my mother is a housewife. I have two brothers, Adrian, who is 21 and studying to be an architect at Birmingham University. Nigel is the youngest and at 13 atte’ds Bristol Grammar School where his days are filled with football, cricket, and other sports. Now I also have an American family to love, too, and it is through the help and understanding of my two families and all my friends at Madison, that my year has been such a happy, wonderful, memorable one. Basically there aren't too many differences between England and America. However, when I first came, I noticed particularly marked difference in houses. English homes are mainly built of brick or stone placed closely together, and inside not so many amenaties and less central heating. Your homes are mainly wood of colonial architec ture and with large gardens or yards as you call them. Our gardens are smaller, more compact, and filled with bright, delicately scented flowers. Our old country lanes are shaded by stalwart, ancient oak trees which overhang the green hedges and rich green fields. When I arrived I was amazed at the size of your cars, and I must admit, fascinated, too. However, I was also scared until I became accustomed to the driving on the other side of the road. Food is slightly different too, a few examples are — the very highly seasoned foods of America, which I enjoy, and your delicious corn-on- the-cob, which isn't grown in England. Whenever I used to see pictures of America it was invariably enormous skyscrapers, the like of which England has not yet produced. However, I was quite disappointed to find that these are confined to New York City only. A very marked difference is the hectic pace of living, Americans seem to keep; but however speeded up, fundamentally so many things are the same: hobbies, entertainment, believing the same faiths, and speaking-more or less, the same language, and most important, Ameri- cans laugh at the same things as the English. The schools are quite different as the educational aspects are incompatible. At home, school is more disciplined and there is much more respect for the teachers as we always have to stand when they come into the room, and call the men-sir. However, in American schools one is treated as an individual and an adult. Like Americans we work hard, have our ups and downs and make wonderful friends. I will miss all those friends I have made in Madison very much when I leave. How proud I am to be Madison's first A.F.S. Exchange Student. I wish all the AFS'ers you may have (and may there be many) have as successful a year as mine, and to you, all the best of luck in the future. —Hilary Bell Hilary enjoying a dance with Denny Lowe. 5 Teachers receive their apples on “Apples for the Teacher Day. Madison, with the help of senior fullback, Rick Dingus, jumped to an early lead by scoring two touchdowns in the first quarter. For the remainder of the game, the Streaks had their hands full battling off numerous scoring threats by the Eagles. Geneva rallied late in the game and deadlocked the score 12-12. Conneaut, September 18 Madison's second independent clash of the season aaginst Conneaut saw the Streaks scoring early in the game and making those scores hold up. Again it was Rick Dingus who paced the team with another two touchdown effort, making the score 14-8. This was Madison's first victory of the season and they are now unbeaten in their last fourteen games, stretching back to the 1962 season. Edgewood, September 26 The Edgewood Bulldogs proved too rugged for the Blue Streaks as Madison failed to score in their first league game. Scoring twice in the first quarter, the Bulldogs limited Madison to meager yardage and prevented any real scoring threat. This im- pressive game, with the final score of 28-0, ended Madison's long winning streak. Fairport, October 2 Fairport, out to avenge last year's 8-0 loss, rolled past the Streaks with a score of 24-6. As usual, it was a hard fought game, of which the Skippers proved to be the better team. After Madison failed to score from Fairport's three-yard line at the be- ginning of the first quarter, it was a hopeless game as the Skippers scored eighteen points in the first half. Madison's lone TD came in the last quarter when junior halfback, Ross Rizzo, rammed into the end zone with 7:33 remaining in the game. Chardon, October 9 On the rain-soaked field of Chardon, Madison suffered its third straight setback at the hands of the Hilltoppers. It was a hard fought game on a very wet and slippery held, but Chardon managed to end up on top, 12-6. Trailing by two TD's the Blue Streaks valiantly fought back. With the ball set jp on the one yard line by fullback Rick Dingus, halfback Chad Carrick carried the ball into the end zone for the touchdown. But with time running out, the Streaks could not score again. Jefferson, October 16 Madison showed great promise in the game against Jefferson, as the half ended with the score deadlocked at 14-14. But the Falcons came back strong in the second half, scoring three touchdowns to win 36-14. Rick Dingus scored the Streaks first touchdown on a one yard plunge and Ross Rizzo received a pass from quarterback Keith Beatty for the PAT. The second TD was scored on a pass from Beatty to end Bob Zubeck. Perry, October 23 In one of the most exciting games of the season, the Blue Streaks came up with their first league victory by defeating the Perry Pirates 28-16. Both Madison and Perry were looking for their first league victories, but the Streaks held their arch rivals to just 16 points in the last quarter and re- tained the coveted Little Brown Jug once again. Scoring was well divided for Madison as Streaks Ron Grapatin, Chad Carrick, Rick Dingus, and Keith Beatty carried for TD's. Conneaut, October 29 Madison traveled to Conneaut for the second time this season when the Blue Streaks played the Spartans. This time the tables were turned as Conneaut won the contest 22-6. Fumbles and earlier experience accounted for Conneaut's TD's as Madison could not muster enough drive to score until Rick Dingus plunged four yards for a TD with just 17 seconds remaining in the game. Harbor, November 6 Madison suffered its sixth and final defeat of the 1964 football season at the hands of Ashtabula Harbor. The game ended with the score 34-8. Madison's only touchdown came with 53 seconds left in the game when quarterback Keith Beatty connected with Gary Winters on a 58 yard touch- down play. The Streaks ended the season with a 2-6-1 record It was a rough year for the 1964 football team, as they were hampered by injuries and lack of experience. It is wonderful to experience the thrill of victory but it is another thing to experience defeat. We all hope that through this year's ex- perience the Blue Streaks will benefit in the coming seasons. 12 CHEERLEADERS Cheerleaders lead a cheer. October 16 marked the annual Madison Home- coming football game. The Blue Streaks hosted Ashtabula Harbor in the game in which the Streaks were upset with a score of 36-14. However, this defeat did not seem to greatly mar the enthusiasm of the crowd for the Homecoming Dance, held the evening of Saturday, October 17 During halftime the Homecoming candidates circled the football field riding in convertibles. As each candidate descended from her car, she was met and escorted by her father to the center of the field. Finally, as expectations reached their climax, Miss Sherry Nash was named the 1964 Homecoming Queen. A bouquet of red roses was presented to the queen by Ted Kowalczk. Mem- bers of the queen's court were Linda Horton, Linda Matteson, Linda Tatar, and Sherrie Waterman. Topping off this eventful weekend was the Home- coming Dance held the following evening. The auditorium cafeteria was decorated in blue, white, and varying shades of pink. The high point of the evening was the crowning of Queen Sherry by Rick Dingus. After the coronation, the queen and her escort, Gary Fedele, began a dance, with the other members of the court and their escorts, and finally all of the other couples, joining in. The Art Ramsey Combo provides music for the evening. The queen's attendants and their escorts included: Linda Horton and Chuck Cimino, Linda Matteson and Ted Brunson, Linda Tatar and Tom Hoffman, and Sherrie Waterman and Ron Grapatin. As one of the senior band members once said, I don't see how we can be on the field Friday night, ready for a show, after a week of sheer confusion in the band room. Mr. Acerra's reply was, You'd be surprised how organized that con- fusion really is. Well, the marching band is organized, and is also one of the largest and hardest working groups in our school, Each summer the members attend a one-week Band Camp, where, under the direction of Mr. Joseph Acerra, they practice formations and learn music for the coming football season. 20 • t Jk ■ • 1 • Vv . . £ 'V — %. : i. . - - : - • A. w v To raise money for twenty new uniforms this year, the band marched in the Mardi Gras parade at Fairport, held Tag Day, sponsored a smorgas- bord, and received proceeds from the sale of the football tickets. The basic program of the band's shows at foot ball games includes a drill, formations, a dance specialty number, and the script M. Highlight of the season came this year when the eighty-two member MMHS marching band, along with four other Lake County high school bands, played at the Indians game at Cleveland Stadium. Coming out this year will be the band's L.P. record, consisting of school songs, favorite marches, and specialty numbers. September 18 — The Blue Streaks hosted the Kirtland Hornets in their season opener, crushing Kirtland 16-41. Led by Matt Calderon on a dampened course, the Streaks took the first four places. September 24 — Icy winds and rain blew across the Chapel Hills Golf Course as Chuck Hudson led Madison to a close margin of victory over the Harbor Mariners. September 29 — Streak harriers posted their second league victory as they clipped the Perry Pirates easily. Again led by Matt Calderon, nine Streaks finished in the top 14. October 1 — Madison edged the defending champs 25-30, taking over sole possession of first place in the W.R.L. Matt Calderon finished closely behind the Edgewood Warrior's Glen Dawson. October 9 — The Streaks clipped the Riverside Beavers in this non league encounter. Cold temperatures couldn't hold down Matt Calderon, Calvin Birman, and Rick Anderson who broke the course record. October 13 — Upon resuming league action the Blue Streaks edged the Harbor Mariners in a close meet. Only a strong effort prevented defeat. October 20 — A perfect record was put on the line when the Blue Streaks met the Edgewood Warriors. Defeat was the outcome in a terrific Warrior race. October 27 — Madison closed out a long successful season against the Perry Pirates. A spectacular race climaxed the Streaks season with a co- championship as the reward. 22 Matt Calderon races for the finish line. SPONSORED BY DIAMOND ALKALI CO. Members take break. The play was under the expert direction of Miss Jean Westfall. Work- ing diligently through seven and a half weeks of rehearsals the cast made the play a success in the two nights it was presented. The cast was chosen according to their ability to fill the part. Also careful consideration was given to the physical characteristics such as height, weight, and hair color. This consideration was useful in a more perfect casting of the play. Miss Westfall chose Denny Lowe to assist her as student director. Ted Kowalczyk and Tim Johnson were chosen as stage managers. The lead roles were Jim Boyd, Karen Schoenfeld, John Dodge, and Linda Matteson. Jim played the part of Herbert Gage, a family man who attempts to write a book amid all the chaos and confusion of his active family. Karen was Marge Gage, the vivacious wife of Herbert Gage. John played the part of Johnathan Rockwood, a conservative old man who tries to maintain his family's claim to their New England house. Linda was John's wife, Mathilda Rockwood. Other members of the cast included Hilary Bell, as Frieda, the Gage's hired help. The Gage's daughters were Barbara, portrayed by Gretchen Rudolf; Sarah, portrayed by Cheryl Hathaway, and Paula, played by Linda Hprton. George Husted, Barbara Gage's fiance, was played by Ted Brunson. Mr. Loomis was the Gage's lawyer and was played by Charles Cimino. Bill Haase was Uncle Walter. Matt Rockwood, Jonathan and Mathilda's son, was played by Mike Billington. Dale Materna was Carson, the policeman and the constable was played by Denny Lowe. The play had an Early American atmosphere which was enhanced by the many authentic colonial props. Included in the props were such things as an Early American gate leg table, a colonial slat- bench, and a cobbler's bench. Through all the laughter and the color of the play a special message was conveyed from the stage to the audience. This message was a realistic idea and it supplied the basis for the complete success. Members of the cast are Dale Materna, Charles Cimino, Hilary Bell, Gretchen Rudolf, Ted Brunson, Bill Hasse, Karen Schoenfeld, John Dodge, Jim Boyd, Mike Billington, Cheryl Hathaway, Linda Matteson and Linda Horton. Mr. Gage (Jim Boyd) continues his typing unaware of his wife's jabbering (Karen Schoenfeld). 26 The Rockwoods (John Dodge and Linda Matteson) return to their home after six years of absence. The Girl's Athletic Association was formed last year with the purpose of promoting athletics, creating a love of sports and fostering the ideal of good sportsman- ship. Under the supervision of the girl's physical educa- tion teacher, Miss Sally Phillips, it has become an organi- zation of which the girls of Madison are very proud. It gives them a chance to work together as a team and helps them accept the thrills of victory and the bitter tastes of defeat. This years officers are; Gretchen Rudolf — president, Linda Atkin — vice president, and Nancy Petrie — secretary. G.A.A. is open to all girls in the ninth, tenth, ele- venth and twelfth grades. To be an active member, a girl must earn at least 50 points a year and pay dues of a $1.00. These dues help pay for awards which are presented at the end of each year. Girls take part in such sports as field hockey, volley- ball, basketball, softball, track and gymnastics. Those who play well are chosen to represent Madison as they challenge other schools in various sports. Because of the large turnouts to G.A.A., the Freshmen and Sophomores now meet after school on Mondays, while the Juniors and Seniors meet on Wednesday evenings. To help earn money to meet their expenses, the G.A.A. has taken on several projects this year. They have sponsored a canteen and sold pens on which Madison's basketball schedule was printed. This is one organization that the girls of Madison could not do without. Advisor: Miss Phillips. Paulette Dingus drives for a Madison goal during a field hockey game. And Jill came tumbling after. Service Club-Valuable Organization Since the Service Club began in Madison it has proved itself to be a worthwhile and valuable organization to Madison Memorial High School. The members have eagerly served all students and faculty members. While other students and faculty members came to view the football games, the Service Club mem- bers worked through all types of weather to pre- pare hot foods and drinks for all spectators. The rain and cold did not hinder their efforts. At basketball games their services were also enthusiastically rendered, serving drinks and foods. All who attended football and basketball games would have found it hard to imagine these activities with the absence of the Service Club and its re- freshments. Each year at a designated time an awards assembly is held at which Service Club members receive letters and other awards to reward them for the conscientious work done throughout the year. 35 36 37 Row 1: Ted Kowalczyk, Stan Bush, Tim John- Row 2: Gary Winters, Mike Billington, Mike son, Terry Stevens, Ross Rizzo, Chuck Jackson, Louie Spisak, Bob Zubek, Hudson. Ron Grapatin. Bluestreaks have close and exciting season. November 28 — The Blue Streaks opened the 1964- 65 cage season as they traveled to Riverside to face the Beavers in a non-league clash. Neither squad unwound, but the Streaks came out on top 44-34, opening the season on an optimistic note. December 4 — Madison hosted the Chardon Hill- toppers and erased all doubts of weakness crush- ing the visitors 76-54. Ron Grapatin paced the victory with 21 markers. The Streaks outscored Chardon 23-4 in the final period of action. December 5 — The Conneaut Spartons invaded the Streaks gym and held Madison close throughout the contest. A spirited team effort carried Madison to victory 59-54. December 11 — The Streaks' second real test came when they ventured to Edgewood. Another fine team effort gained the Streaks a 69-58 victory. Paced by Zubek and Stevens the Blue Streaks out- scored the Warriors 24-15 in the final quarter to soar to victory. December 12 —The lowly Perry Pirates threw a real shock into the Blue Streaks leading throughout most of the contest. Only 16 straight points at the final quarter's opening carried Madison to a 54- 51 victory. December 18 —The Blue Streaks were treated to a real vacation as they ventured to St. John's and ripped the Heralds 85-66 for victory number six. Four cagers finished with over 16. markers in what was termed a fine team victory December 30 — The trip to Geneva almost proved disastrous as the Blue Streaks were forced to battle back to gain their 58-56 win over the powerful Eagles. Ron Grapatin's jumper, with 49 seconds left, sent Madison ahead and on to victory. January 8 — Heading back to the league trail the highly rated Streaks were upset by Fairport 58-50. The result was shocking to all as Madison found it impossible to contain a spirited Harding crew. It was the initial loss of the season for Madison, the last team in the Western Reserve League to fall 3 from the undefeated ranks. January 9 — Madison upped their record to 8-1 as they nipped the Harvey Red Raiders 46-44 in a real cliff hanger. The Streaks unwound in the late stages to capture the independent clash. January 15 —The Harbor Mariners forced Madison to make a last period comeback to win 60-47 The score was tied several times during the fourth period action. January 22 — The Blue Streaks traveled to Chardon to end a jinx on the Hilltoppers' court. Madison picked up a 69-63 victory, but was forced to rally from behind again. January 29 — Madison had a chance to bolster their hold on second place but lost to Edgewood 56-39. The Streaks were down by 40-15 in the third quarter. Only a fourth period rally by the second string closed the gap. January 30 — Madison picked up a 72-63 win over the Jefferson Falcons. After a somewhat easy outburst the Falcons mode matters tough. February 6 — Perry came to town only to be routed 70-47. The margin of victory was 23, a big change over the three of the First meeting of the cage crews. Coach February 9 — The school night cage encounter saw the Blue Streaks pick up a lopsided 58-54 victory over the St. John Heralds to carry a 13-2 record into the Fairport game. February 12 — Is a date few will long to remember as the Fairport Skippers routed Madison 78-64 to knock them out of the title race. The closest the Streaks could pull was 35-31 in the contest before the Harding crew would surge further ahead. February 19 —Madison met the Harbor Mariners on their court and came home with a loss This ended the season of league play and placed Madi- son second in league standings. Our matmen grapple through fair season. Starting the 1964-65 season already under- manned was the wrestling team. Coached by Mr. Melin the squad has fought hard for its victories through the season. The squad has fought in an attempt to finish above the .500 mark. The season opened against the Edgewood War- riors who crushed the Streaks 29-12. A league match to Chardon saw Madison fall again 33-10. John Nash and George Fuller saved a shutout by gaining pins. December 12, 1964 the Blue Streaks crushed Conneaut 41-0 on a rousing victory headed by four pins. A close match saw the Streaks lose 20-17 to Wickliffe. Madison held 14-12 lead but failed to hold on. Edgewood bounced the Streaks 33-8 with Jerry Burns picking up the only pin. A return match with Wickliffee saw Madison win 19-18. The match went down to the final division in a real tight contest. West Geagua overcame an early Streak lead to gain and win in an independent loss. Another victory came over Kirtland as Madison picked up an easy win. A 38-2 loss to Chardon allowed the Hilltoppers to take the WRL crown another year. Conneaut suffered a 45-5 loss to our Blue Streaks who dominated all the action. 44 George Fuller rides his opponent with head lever. Joe Miller cradles up a Wickliffe Blue Devil. The Student Council of Madison High School is the student body's governing organization. The purpose of the Council includes ;the develop- ment of and practice in, good citizenship; to im- prove school morale, which reflects the character of the school; promote the general welfare of the school; and encourage democracy as a way of life. The two last elements in the purpose of the Council are: to improve the student teacher relationship, and to provide a form of expression for the students. Leading the student organization this year is President Linda Horton. The council is under the advisorship of Mr. William Vogan. Due to the large influx of the freshman class the mem- bership of Student Council has increased from thirty-two to forty members. There are seven standing committees composing the Council and are organized by the President. The committees for the year included; the executive committee. the publications committee, school spirit, evalua- tion, rules, foster child, and public relations committee. The Council concerns itself with the problems confronting the students of the high school. In order to accomplish its goal the Council has a suggestion box in the cafeteria. The students can write their ideas on paper and drop them in the suggestion box. Several problems have been remedied through the use of the box. Some of the projects which the Student Council has organized include: the Hilary Hop, students of the month, the foster child, the MMHS pins, the Thanksgiving basket, the Christ- mas basket, the Christmas tree, car washes, the victory flag, the purchase of a Varsity jacket for Hilary, the coat check at the basketball games, and the revision of the student handbook. The MMHS student Council is also active in the Lake County Area Student Council, as well as being one of the oldest members. 75 Scholarship Club members must maintain at least a 3.1 average. The Lake County Scholarship Club is an hon- orary organization at Madison, Kirtland, Fair- port Harbor, Painesville Riverside, and Perry High Schools. The main purpose of this club is to recognize those people who do outstanding work in school and to encourage them to continue this good work. The members are chosen each year at midterm from the Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, and Senior classes on the basis of a 3.1 average or better. These people are awarded pins which signify their years of membership. Each year, all five schools select a county of- ficer who presides for that year. This year, our officer is president, Gretchen Rudolf. Under the direction of Miss Jean Westfall, the Club's annual banquet was held at Madison this year. At the banquet, each four-year member was presented with a special certificate honoring him or her for this superior achievement. The club this year continued its project of sell- ing paperback books to the Madison student body. This project was begun last year as a way of rais- ing funds for future banquets. On February 19, a select group of juniors and seniors were inducted into the Madison Chapter of the National Honor Society. Membership in the Society is the utmost honor that can be given a high school student. Up to ten per cent of the junior class and five per cent of the senior class are inducted into the Society each year. Thus, each class may have fifteen per cent of its students within the Society. In a ceremony witnessed by the entire student body, the new members were tapped by the old. This was a pleasant surprise for the new members, because up until the day before the ceremony, only the principal had known of their candidacy. The new members' parents had been notified of the induction on the day preceding the ceremony, but had been sworn to secrecy. In the pledge which was repeated by the entire membership, the new members promised to uphold the standards of Leadership, Scholarship, Character, and Service set by the Society. Anyone who becomes a member of National Honor Socety possesses these four qualities. Miss Jean West- fall, sponsor of the Madison Chapter, supervised preparations for the ceremony. A reception for the entire membership and their par- ents was held after the induction. The following were received into membership: Andrews, Marjorie, Barmess, Joseph; Davidson, Elizabeth; Dingus, Ricky, Hathaway, Cheryl; Horton, Linda,- Lowe, Denny; Miller, Linda,- Bell, Hilary (Honorary); Anderson, Jane; Atkin, Linda,- Bush, Stanley,- Carr, Tom; Davis, Gary,- Durk, Elaine; Hearn, Polly,- Johnson, Barbara; Kline, Pamela,- Laskowski, Judith; Mayhew, Wendy; Miles, Peggy,- Reigert, Rex; Rizzo, Ross; Roehrer, Karen,- Stevens, Terry,- Tracey, Terri; Volante, Thomas,- Yuill, Janice. Jeanette Busch, Editor Copy Staff: Gretchen Rudolf, Denny Lowe, Pat Lyons. As most people know this yearbook is published by the Cauldron staff. This staff is made up of two main divi- sions. The Art division deals mainly with the content of the book, while the business division concerns itself with the raising of money and the distribution of the book. These divisions are then broken down into smaller committees. The art and layout staff, the typing staff, the copy staff, and the staff Photographers constitute the art division. The business division consists of the advertising staff, the circulation staff. It takes hard work to produce a yearbook of good quality and the staff members have worked faithfully at their jobs. The advertising staff went out and sold ads 'at the beginning of the school year to earn money to help pay for the book. The circulation staff is the one who sold you your book. The copy staff members are the ones who are responsible for the written material in the book. This ma- terial is then taken by the typing staff, who type it to prepare it for mailing to the printing company. The three photograph- ers on the staff take the pictures you see in this book. The last committee, but the largest, is the art and layout staff. This committee spends at least four hours a week con- cerning itself with the publication of the Cauldon. Half of this time is spent staying after school working on the book. The members of this staff design the cover, layout the pages of the book, cut and size the pictures, and finally paste in the pictures and the copy so the book can be sent to the printers in its final form. Each summer some of the members of the Cauldron staff attend the Journalism Workshop at Ohio University to gain knowledge on how to carry out their jobs. This brings about greater efficiency when it comes time to start production in the fall. 80 Photographer: Gary Davis Cauldron Art Staff: Judy Billman, Sandy Wester, Sandy Dixon, Linda Matteson, Connie Cintula and Sharon Benskv. 81 Typing Staff: Gwen Leoffler, Margie Andrews, Judi Leslie, Nancy Petrie. Seniors! Seniors! Seniors! On Friday, January 8, several members of the senior class presented a skit for the student body. The skit's theme centered around the Beat Fairport cheer. Six senior boys performing as pall bearers, carried a wooden casket which con- tained the remains of the Fairport basketball team. The casket was preceded by two candle bearers. It was followed by several girls who wore mourn- ing veils. A small service was held over the remains. This service was lead by a stately figure in clerical clothes. The remains in the casket was played by Kip Petti, while the candle bearers were played by Denny Lowe and Paul Springer. The pall bearers were: John Drzik, Ted Brunson, Rick Dingus, Dale Materna, Steve Glawitch, and Jim Boyd. Junior-Senior Prom in the making. Springer cracks another funny. Reviews of our past. In September of 1959 we entered Madison Memorial High School as seventh graders. During the six years we have spent here, we have made many lasting friendships and shared many activities. During our seventh and eighth grade years, we watched, wide- eyed, the upperclassmen in their activities, seeing what was in store for us. We sold greeting cards and gift wrap to make money for our class treasury. Our Freshman and Sophmore years held many long hours at the books. Grades now began to mean more to us — some of us even made Scholarship Club. Class rings were the highlight of our Junior year. Who could deny ours were the sharpest ever? We had a lot of fun in our Junior year. Football and basketball games took on a new interest because for the first time many of our classmates were on the varsity teams. And then there was the magazine sale. We got right out and sold them — we wanted our Prom to be the greatest ever! The Christmas Dance was planned down to the last minute detail, but the weather was against us. Another outstanding event for many of us was getting our driver's licenses. Oh, that parallel parking! For a few of us that trip to Ashtabula became pretty familiar. Several of us were inducted into National Honor Society. G.I.R.L.S. Club was initiated with our class. Our Senior year began in September of 1964. Among us now was Madison's first foreign exchange student. Our final year raced past us, too fast to keep us. It started with football games and senior pictures. And we can't forget the Homecoming and our lovely queen. We ordered announcements and had our robes fitted. Spring brought baccalaureate and Commencement, and the Senior Prom was a per- fect ending to our busiest of years. Mr. Matuscak and his collection of the senior's clocks which never went off. HONOR GRADUATES These fourteen students will graduate at the top of their class with honors. They have main- tained at least a 3.5 average throughout their high school career. This has proven their ability to study and apply their knowledge. Not only have they excelled scholastically, but many of them lead their class in sports, service, and leader- ship. They deserve a great amount of credit for their exceptional high school accomplishments and the Cauldron Staff wishes to extend congratula- tions. 100 George Mavko, Jeanette Busch, Joe Barmess, Sandy Dixon, Paul Springer, Barbara Glavan, Karen Fulkman, Pat Lyons, Linda Matteson. 101 JOHN PADGETT ABESHAHEEN Johnny NANCY ANNE BALABAN Shorty BRUCE DOUGLAS BARCLAY Bruce' JOHN PADGETT ABESHAHEEN: Science Club 1, 2; Lake County Scholarship Club 2, 3, 4; Philos- ophy Club 4; Alternate 'Its Academic' Team 4.
