Mr. Sabruno FOOTBALL Mr. Miller The Madison Blue Streaks played host to the Geneva Eagles in their first independent game of the season on Sep- tember 6. Although faced by one of the toughest and biggest teams they were to encounter all season, the Streaks rose to the challenge by rocking the Eagles 34-6. The next game was played at Conneaut and proved to be no contest for the fight- ing Madison team as they shut-out the Trojans 46-0. In their first league encounter, the Blue Streaks met the visiting Chardon Hilltoppers on September 20 at Memorial Stadium. The Hilltoppers put up a battle against the Madison crew in the first half, allowing the Streaks only one touchdown. Rick Dingus scored on a dash over the goal line from eight yards out in the first stanza. However, the highly-powered Streaks plowed back in the second half with halfback Tom Bukky scoring a pair of touchdowns for Madison. This tallied our third win in a row and second shut-out of the season, ending with a score of 20-0. In a startling comeback in the final minutes of the game at Ashtabula Harbor, Madison scored a touchdown which clinched the game for the Streaks. As Ashtabula recovered a third-quarter fumble, junior Bob Zubek tackled the ball carrier to score a two-point safety for Madison. In the final quarter, Bukky carried the ball to the three yard line. With only two seconds left in the game, quarterback Dave Bodak went through the middle for a touchdown. The PAT was scored against only six Mariner defenders. The 10-6 win over the stunned Mari- ners kept Madison in a first place tie with Fairport and Perry with a 2-0 league record. On October 4, the Blue Streaks rocked the visiting Edgewood team in a 36-14 victory to win our homecoming game. By recovering Edgewood fumbles, Zubek and Reese each set up TD’s, made by John Gabele on a run and a Bodak-Houson pass play. Other TD’s by Dingus, Gabele, and Bukky kept the mighty Madison team on a win- ning streak. Edgewood proved to be the only team during the season to score against Madison by running. In a rivalry which began 15 years ago, Madison regained possession of the Little Brown Jug” from the defending Perry Pirates. The Pirates were blanked 46-0 in the third Madison shut-out of the season. Bukky was the first Streak to score, with a TD and a PAT. Another score by the big senior plus two touchdowns by John Gabele seemed to over- whelm the Perry team. They posed no real threat all evening as Madison continued to total up points. Dingus, playing in tennis shoes because of an injury, scored in the second quarter. On a 10 yard pass from Bodak, Zubek ran 55 yards to add his name to the list of scorers. Reese showed his ability through- out the game by breaking up many Perry plays. Although two TD’s by Bukky and one by Duke Biscotti were nullified by penalties, the Streaks were not handicapped in their fourth league win. The Streaks traveled to Conneaut to battle the Rowe Vikings on October 18, returning home undefeated once again. Halfback Tom Bukky tallied the first two touchdowns and also the final one. Fullback Rick Dingus and end Bob Zubek accounted for the other TD’s. Gabele and Houston rounded out the scoring with one two-point conversion each. They ended with a score of 34-0, tallying their seventh win in a row and the fourth shut-out of the season. Madison journeyed to Jefferson on October 25 and blasted the Falcons 50-0. Tom Bukky made the first TD while Chuck Houston set up another by catching a 22 yard pass. Rick Dingus went 61 yards for a touchdown and Gabele shot up the middle for the extra points. In the fourth quarter, Coach George Opron put in the second team and they proved just as proficient as the first string. Chad Carrick tallied two TD’s to end the scoring for the evening. The Madison team slipped by Fairport Harbor, with a score of 8-0. to clinch the Western Reserve League crown and cap an undefeated season. In the last stages of the second quarter, Bukky crashed over the left side and into the end zone for the Streaks’ only touchdown of the rainsoaked contest. Bodak flipped to Zubek for the PAT. Although requiring a solid defensive effort on the part of the entire team, it was senior Ed Shook who wrapped up the victory for Madison. Fairport was driving toward the Madison goal line late in the game when Shook picked off a stray aerial attempt from Fair- port and dashed 58 yards before being tackled. The 1963 football team has left a record of which the entire school is very proud. They have also set a high goal for which teams of the future can aim. 18
