In the passing away of this school year, a great and wonderful man has also passed away from us. The day of the tradgic event was mixed with shock and grief for all of us. John Fitzgerald Kennedy was not only our loss, but the worlds loss too. But why was such a great person killed? Was it because he was the President, or that he strongly upheld his beliefs, or because of his wealth? No, it isn’t for any of these reasons. It’s a reason that should stun and shock the world, and that includes all of us in our little world, here at Madison High. It was because of a terrible thing called hatred. Not only the hatred of one man for another, but the hatred thousands of people are showing every day. If they want to truly build a memorial for John Kennedy, then let us start a war on hatred, right here, right now, in our own little world! Men are writing the praises of him, men are building statues of him, but men are not putting hatred out of their hearts, and this is what he would have waned most. Re- member, he asked not what his country could do for him, but what he could do for his country. Let’s start asking ourselves the same thing and thus truly build a memorial for John Fitzgerald Kennedy. 6 7 Tina Mayhew—Head Majorette Barbara Glavin MARCHING BAND Anyone who attends Madison football games knows the thrill of seeing and hearing the Madison Memorial High School Marching Band as they march onto the field. Neither rain nor sleet nor snow nor dark of night” stop these players from their formations. Under the field direction of Head Majorette, Tina Mayhew, the band, by some mysterious power, transforms a clutter of kids into a moving clock or a boat or a script M. Many of these shows used during the year are originated and organized each summer at Band Camp. Here the band members under the direction of Mr. Joseph Acerra, band director, toil for a week to be ready for the first football game. The new raincoats purchased this year were put to good use when the band marched in the rain at one of the games. Officers of the band include; president--Kathy Buttwin, vice presi- dent—Dick Knape, and secretary-treasurer—Susie Shelton. Theresa Blouin 8 Cindy Hixon Susan Waterman This is for my mommy. The dance, sponsored by the senior class, was held on Saturday, October 5. Congratulations! The Madison Blue Streaks played host to the Edgewood Warriors in a game which proved to be rewarding to the Streaks, as they tromped the Warriors 36-14. Although faced with very cold weather, a huge crowd showed up to enjoy the festivities during halftime. At the beginning of the halftime all the Homecoming can- didates rode in cars around the outside of the field. As each candidate came forth, they were met and escorted by their fathers into the heart formation arranged by the Madison High School marching band. While being escorted into the heart, the band played Sweethearts of Sigma Chi. As the tension of the candidates mounted to a climax, it was an- nounced that Miss Linda Wester had been chosen as the 1963 Homecoming Queen. Senior band member, Tom Smith, pre- sented the queen with a bouquet of red roses. The queen’s court consisted of Shirley Guyer, Marje Hummel, Gwen Ivan- cic and Janis Lintern. The climax of this wonderful weekend was the dance being held on Saturday in the auditorium cafeteria. Adorning the far end of the auditorium was the queen s throne, where decorations of pink and white were to be seen. In addition to the decorations there were also pink and white balloons floating high to the ceiling. The highlight of the evening was the crowning of Queen Linda Wester by the football captain, Tim Behm. After the coronation, Queen Linda and her escort, Norman Bager, had the pleasure of beginning a dance w'hile the other attendants and their escorts followed. The music was provided by the Jack Clark Orchestra. The other attendants and their escorts were: Shirley Guyer and Chuck Houston, Marje Hummel and Ed Shook, Gwen Ivancic and Jim Reese and Janis Linetrn and Brad Palmer. Cheesecake. Although faced by one of the toughest and biggest teams they were to encounter all season, the Streaks rose to the challenge by rocking the Eagles 34-6. The next game was played at Conneaut and proved to be no contest for the fight- ing Madison team as they shut-out the Trojans 46-0. In their first league encounter, the Blue Streaks met the visiting Chardon Hilltoppers on September 20 at Memorial Stadium. The Hilltoppers put up a battle against the Madison crew in the first half, allowing the Streaks only one touchdown. Rick Dingus scored on a dash over the goal line from eight yards out in the first stanza. However, the highly-powered Streaks plowed back in the second half with halfback Tom Bukky scoring a pair of touchdowns for Madison. This tallied our third win in a row and second shut-out of the season, ending with a score of 20-0. In a startling comeback in the final minutes of the game at Ashtabula Harbor, Madison scored a touchdown which clinched the game for the Streaks. As Ashtabula recovered a third-quarter fumble, junior Bob Zubek tackled the ball carrier to score a two-point safety for Madison. In the final quarter, Bukky carried the ball to the three yard line. With only two seconds left in the game, quarterback Dave Bodak went through the middle for a touchdown. The PAT was scored against only six Mariner defenders. The 10-6 win over the stunned Mari- ners kept Madison in a first place tie with Fairport and Perry with a 2-0 league record. On October 4, the Blue Streaks rocked the visiting Edgewood team in a 36-14 victory to win our homecoming game. By recovering Edgewood fumbles, Zubek and Reese each set up TD’s, made by John Gabele on a run and a Bodak-Houson pass play. Other TD’s by Dingus, Gabele, and Bukky kept the mighty Madison team on a win- ning streak. Edgewood proved to be the only team during the season to score against Madison by running. In a rivalry which began 15 years ago, Madison regained possession of the Little Brown Jug” from the defending Perry Pirates. The Pirates were blanked 46-0 in the third Madison shut-out of the season. Bukky was the first Streak to score, with a TD and a PAT. Another score by the big senior plus two touchdowns by John Gabele seemed to over- whelm the Perry team. They posed no real threat all evening as Madison continued to total up points. Dingus, playing in tennis shoes because of an injury, scored in the second quarter. On a 10 yard pass from Bodak, Zubek ran 55 yards to add his name to the list of scorers. Reese showed his ability through- out the game by breaking up many Perry plays. Although two TD’s by Bukky and one by Duke Biscotti were nullified by penalties, the Streaks were not handicapped in their fourth league win. The Streaks traveled to Conneaut to battle the Rowe Vikings on October 18, returning home undefeated once again. Halfback Tom Bukky tallied the first two touchdowns and also the final one. Fullback Rick Dingus and end Bob Zubek accounted for the other TD’s. Gabele and Houston rounded out the scoring with one two-point conversion each. They ended with a score of 34-0, tallying their seventh win in a row and the fourth shut-out of the season. Madison journeyed to Jefferson on October 25 and blasted the Falcons 50-0. Tom Bukky made the first TD while Chuck Houston set up another by catching a 22 yard pass. Rick Dingus went 61 yards for a touchdown and Gabele shot up the middle for the extra points. In the fourth quarter, Coach George Opron put in the second team and they proved just as proficient as the first string. Chad Carrick tallied two TD’s to end the scoring for the evening. The Madison team slipped by Fairport Harbor, with a score of 8-0. to clinch the Western Reserve League crown and cap an undefeated season. In the last stages of the second quarter, Bukky crashed over the left side and into the end zone for the Streaks’ only touchdown of the rainsoaked contest. Bodak flipped to Zubek for the PAT. Although requiring a solid defensive effort on the part of the entire team, it was senior Ed Shook who wrapped up the victory for Madison. Fairport was driving toward the Madison goal line late in the game when Shook picked off a stray aerial attempt from Fair- port and dashed 58 yards before being tackled. The 1963 football team has left a record of which the entire school is very proud. They have also set a high goal for which teams of the future can aim. 18 Guards: Herm Webb, Tim Wester, Jim Carl Jim Reese, Norm Eager SENIOR GRIDDERS Backs: Tom Bukkv, John Gable, Ed Shook, Matt Biscott. CROSS COUNTRY TEAM FINISHES WITH 5-5 RECORD The cross-country team, coached by Mr. Donald Strother, has only been in existence at Madison for two years. Captain Tom Smith led the team this year to a 5-5 record. The team won three out of four home meets run on a course which has been called the roughest in the league. In the district meet, the Madison runners beat every other team in the W.R.L., placing 21st out of 32. Smith captured 3 first place positions in league meets. Matt Calderon aided the team greatly by finishing second for the team in over three-fourths of the meets. In addition Matt broke the course record, along with Tom Smith, at West Geauga High School. Interest in this relatively new varsity sport is increasing and we wish the boys luck in their meets next season. 28 OUR VARSITY LETTERMEN ROW I: Buddy Buck. Rick Dingus, F.d Shook. The cast worked through six and a half weeks of long rehearsals to make this play a success in its two-day run. This year the play production was managed under a new and experienced play director, Mr. Joseph Bako. Mr. Bako is originally from Lakewood, Ohio, but is now residing in Painesville. This is his first year of teaching at Madison where he teaches such subjects as Economic Georgraphy and English 9- Mr. Bako had the advan- tage of gaining experience as play director for he has had the op- portunity to attend camps during previous summer. With the help of Student director, Cheryl Freshly, Mr. Bako did an outstanding and remarkably fine job. When asked what he thought of Madison and in regards to play directing he smiled and replied, ”1 like it very, very much.” Sponsored by DIAMOND ALKALI COMPANY Unlike past years, this year the play was presented in the high school gymnasium and performed on a portable stage. This is something new which has been added to the set. The stage is composed of 12 individual units, built and painted by members of the cast. New lights to accent the stage were donated by the senior class, but unfortunately they did not arrive in time for this pro- duction. Practice makes perfect? Leads were played by Duke Biscotti, Ilona Yoe, Norman Eager, Jim Carl and Kathy Buttwin. Supporting leads were acted by John Cieslinski, Cheryl Freshly, Wayne Belew and Tom Black. Duke played the part of Gordon Miller, a dashing producer: Ilona was Christine, the Vamp; Norman held the comic lead by playing Ben ion, a hand man ro Gordon; Jim was Leo Davis, a playwright and Kathy played the part of Hilda, a sweet young secretary. This play takes place in New York during the depression when money is very scarce. It revolved around a producer, Gordon Miller and a playwright, Leo Davis. Mr. Miller can’t find a backer for the play, Godspeed and when Mr. Davis comes to New York to see his play being presented Miller is confronted with many problems mainly with money. He just can’t seem to get this play on the right road. Somehow in the end the play becomes a smashing success and they find themselves in a great amount of money. This is actually a play within a play and how uproarous steps lead to a happy conclusion. Other members of the cast included Chuck Houston, Linda Wester, Mickey Levak, Mike Heath, Nancy Claypool, Terry Blouin, Shirley Northcott, Herman Webb, Tom Bukky, Jim Reese, Karen Barr, Linda Cz and Sandy Podd. 3 Ensemble Tom Nichols, Don Lchto. CONCERT CHOIR GAINS NEW DIRECTOR Although Mr. Joseph Acerra has been with the school for several years, this is the first year he has directed the senior choir. The choir represents one of the best such groups in the area. In addition to the Christmas concert of December 15, the chorus also presenetd a fifteen-minute Christmas program for radio station WREO—Ashtabula. As in past years, the MMHS concert choir represented our school in the district contest for choruses, held this year at Parma. A-l (superior) rating in this contest sends a musical group to the state contest, which is highly competitive. On February 23, our chorus com- bined with similar groups from other Lake County schools in the annual Lake County Choir Festival. Officers are Linda Horton—president, Sherrie Waterman—vice-president, Gret- chen Rudolf—sec.-treas. Also representing Madison in fields of vocal music is the Mixed Ensemble, a select group chosen from the chorus. Many singing engagements are presented by the Ensemble, such as a program for radio station WPVL—Painesville. The choir has a good future, since most of the members are in their sophomore or junior year. We expect the chorus, under the new direction of Mr. Acerra, to achieve much during the next years. GIRLS ENSEMBLE REPRESENTS M.M.H.S. AT DISTRICT CONTEST The Girls’ Ensemble was selected from the Sr. Chorus. This group performs separately and in association with the chorus. They also represented Madison at District Contest. Double Company Front 34 F'x asperat ion! Hear the wheels turning? 35 36 37 ADMINISTRATION 38 Mr. G- Melin—Adrian College; Miss S. February 8, the Streaks tallied their third staright league victory in a row as they stunned the Perry Pirates, 70-52. Friday, February 14, we hosted the Harbor Mariners in what proved to be one of the best games of the season. Because of Bob Zubek's last minute free throws, we came out on top. The final score was 60 to 55. Saturday, February 15, knowing that we were the underdogs, we traveled to Fairport to encounter the Skippers. It was a close game all the way, but Fairport finally pulled ahead and held the lead. Tom Smith’s fine effort of 26 points was not enough to pur us ahead. The end result being 73 to 61. The Blue Streaks ended their season with a 10-8 overall record and a league record of 8-6 placing them in 3rd place for the W R L standings. 57 P.F. flyers Did you ever have that lonesome feeling? The Service Club once again proved to be one of our most outstanding and interesting Clubs this year. This Club is an organization whose main objective is service. The fore- most project is the service which it renders at both the football and basketball games. This fine club is under the supervision of its sponsors, Mr. T. Mackey and Mr. R. C. Quiggle, who devote their time and energy to furthering this club. All members are those sophomore, junior and senior stu- dents who are interested in their school and their club. A service club member should always: be willing to work, prompt when scheduled to work, neat and clean at all times, respectful to all customers, courteous to all, reliable, thoughtful and pleas- ant and congenial to other club members. The officers of the club should be responsible and capable of leading such a club. The officers chosen for this year were Judy Edelman, president; Donna Webster, vice-president; Sharon Wargelin, secretary and Linda Matteson, treasurer. Awards are presented to club members who have shown that they deserve recognition. This is determined by the ad- visors and the officers. The first year a letter is awarded, gradu- ation numerals are given the second year and a bar is pre- sented for the third year. Each member enjoys the time he spends working in the club and the fun of working with each other. 62 STUDENT COUNCIL, THE GOVERNING BODY The Student Council of Madison High is the governing body of the high school. The purpose of this organization is to develop attitudes of, and practice in, good citizenship; improve school morale; promote the general welfare of the school; and encourage democracy as a way of life; improve student-teacher relationships and provide form for the student expression. This year the Student Council is under the expert leader of President Duke Biscotti and advised by Mr. William Vogan. There are approximately thirty-two members in Council. There are six stand- ing Committees composing the Council and are organized by the Presi- dent. The Committees are as follows; executive committee, school spirit and citizenship, rules, evaluation, publications and public relations. This organization has been extremely active with such projects as the clothing drive, the selling of programs at the M.M.H.S. basketball games and the council has created the students of month projects. A Hootenany will be a future project of this organization. The Council has also continued such projects as the basketball game coat check, the dress code of Madison High students and the support of Kim Sook Jung, our Korean Foster Child. A special committee has been chosen for our Foster Child. This committee writes her letters and any other concern that has to do with her. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY On February 21, a selecr group of juniors and seniors were inducted into the Madison Chapter of National Honor Society. In a ceremony witnessed by the entire student body, the new members were tapped by the old, joining a group which has before it a standard and a goal. In the pledge which is repeated by the entire membership, the candidates promise to uphold the standards of Leadership, Scholarship, Character and Service, set by the Society. The possessors of Scholarship and Serv- ice are readly spotted, while the holders of Leadership and Character show these qualities in a more subtle way. Anyone who becomes a member of National Honor Society possesses these four qualities. Miss Jean Westfall, new sponcer of the Madison Chapter, supervised the preparations of the ceremony. A reception for members and their parents was held after the induction. 72 Society members tap new candidates. Parents congratulate sons and daughters after ceremony. New members await induction. 73 SCHOLARSHIP CLUB Third Year Fourth Year ROW I: Kathy Ruttwin, Gwen Ivancic, Chcryll Ray, Marjo Hummel, Joan Barcklcy. Second Year First Year 2 The Lake County Scholarship Club is an honorary or- ganization at Madison High. The main purpose of this Club is to recognize those people who do superior work in school and to encourage the student to continue this good work. The members are chosen at midterm on the basis of a 3.1 average or above. These people are awarded pins which signify the years of membership. A spcial certificate award is presented to the four year members. This year Miss Westfall has been appointed as the new advisor of the Club. In the past, the P.T.A. has treated these people to the annual Lake County Scholarship Banquet, but this year they had difficulty in raising the money so each student paid his own way. Each of the five participating schools select a county offi- cer for the year. This year, our officer was first vice-president, Janis Lintern. The banquet was held at Kirtland High School in the latter part of April. As a new project for the Club they are in charge of the paper-back book corner located in the auditorium. In the fu- ture years the money made on these books will be contributed to the banquet. Attending this year were Janis Lintern and Cheryll Ray. These girls were selected because of scholas- tic achievement and their keen interest in govrnmnt. Janis served in the capacity of personal secretary to the Girls’ State governor. Cheryll served in the Girls’ State which was held at Capital University in Columbus. BOYS STATE Brad Palmer and Matt Biscotti were selected to represent the North Madison Legion post at Boys’ State. Brad was elected to a city council position which he held for the remainder of the session. Matt also was elected to a city council seat. Guest speakers at various assemblies included Governor James Rhodes and basketball star John Vavalchic. Boys’ State convened at Ohio University on June 14 and was adjourned on June 24. 76 Brad Palmer, Matt Biscotti and Tim Behm WORK WELL DONE 77 BASEBALL PRACTICE IN FULL SWING Before the snow is gone baseball practice will be in full swing. Ap- proximately fifty boys have gone out for this sport and from this group a baseball team will be formed. Seven of the nine regulars will be back this season. Recalling last year’s season our team became co-champs with Rowe after beating them twice in league play. Although we’ve lost some good out-fielders and we’re hurting for a pitcher there will be boys who will fill in these empty spaces on the diamond. According to Coach George Apron, Chadron, Jefferson and Rowe will prove to give us a bit of trouble, but ours boys should handle it okay. Coach Opron also stated that our team will be stronger this year and we should be right on top, if not take the league championship. 78 TRACK OLD TIME PHOTOS 80 81 'MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM The Junior Class presented Midsummer Nights Dream;’ a Shake- speare comedy in five acts. It was held on Friday and Saturday nights, April 17 and 18. The play was presented in the gymnasium performed on the new portable stage that the scohol has acquired. The Juniors, along with their director, Mr. Joseph Bako, worked very hard to make this play a success. This play production involved a twenty-five member cast. The cos- tumes which were worn in this play were that of the Elizabethan period. The production was centered around three major settings; a forest in Greece, a palace in Athens and a home of a carpenter. Mr. Bako would especially like to thank some of the art students who painted the neces- sary scenery. Mr. Bako, director and student directors Margie Andrews and Edith Barstow 82 THLETIC SSOCIATION This year the Girl’s Athletic Association is the newest organization to be added to the Athletic department of Madison High. This is open to all girls in the ninth, tenth, eleventh and twelfth grades. The girl’s physical education teacher, Miss Sally Phillips, is also the Advisor of this organization. The G.A.A. was organized for the purpose of pro- moting athletics, to create a love of sports and to foster the ideal of good sportsmanship. The following students were elected as the officers; Karen Ward-President, Linda Lenniger-Vice-President, and Sharon Hooper-Secretary. To be an active member, a girl must earn at least 50 points a year and pay dues of $1.00 which go toward buying awards. A girl earning 200 points, from at least two different sports, fets a G.A.A. emblem and anyone earning 600 points receives a G.A.A. pin. A large letter M is awarded to a girl earning 1200 points, who has made team points in at least three different sports, and who has gone to Madison for at least two years. All senior girls earning 1700 points are eligible for a trophy. Spirit, service and scholarship are to be considered as aids in this selection. Girls take part in such sports as field hockey, volly ball, basketball, badminton, softball, track and gymnastics. Certain girls are chosen to a team from G.A.A. to represent Madison as they challenge other schools in the various sports. This organization proves to be very fine and worthwhile for these girls. 84 85 CLARINETS—Kathy Buttwin, Barb Lorenz, Karen Schocn- field, Cindy Kurtzhals, Barb Glavin, Nancy Zelinka, Susan Waterman, Terry Blouin, Gayle Pethel, Colleen Seufer, Nancy Michelson, Blythe Hudgens, Darlene Peklay, Paul Boomhower, Kay Rist, Kathy Schmidt, Cheryl Wilson, Beth Smith, Diane Wargelin, Sharon Bensky, Virginia Ver- nick, and Martha Hunrich. These are the tools with which the MMHS Concert Band changes little black spots on a sheet of Daper into a symphony, a jazz tune or a waltz. Under the expert guidance of director Joseph Acerra, the band creates music suited to anyone’s tastes. Strict try-outs are held in the fall to determine who will become a member of the Concert Band and which position each will occupy. The Concert Band represents Madison at District and State contests. Also, various members of the band enter as solos or ensembles. Officers are those elected for Marching Band. 86 Practice makes perfect. 87 There’s one in every crowd.
