CAULDRON 1960 MADISON MEMORIAL HIGH SCHOOL East Main Street Madison, Ohio FOREWORD ... The pageantry of student life, the complexity of experiences gained in any given year . . . this is a story as familiar as it is traditional, as unique as the individuals and their time. Old walls mirrored in the chrome and glass of new structures take on a fresh look. The manners of student living undergo subtle changes as Brahms bows to Presley, Newton to Bohr. Classes and individuals grow. Yet, in the end, the same great tradition is served—the better prepara- tion of young men and women for a better life. Madi- son High did this in 1959-1960, effectively, brilliantly, excitingly! Howard W. Donaldson, Superintendent A D M I N I S T R A T I O Herbert Stoll, Guidance Director K I Stephen Matuscak, Asst. Principal 1 1 4 Alexander J. Barr Principal Joyce Pastor Secretary to Mr. Donaldson 5 Mabel Roth Secretary to Mr. Barr Row One: Mr. T. Mackey, Mr. Vogan, Mr. Clark. Row Two: Mr. Matuscak, Mr. Black. M log r = log M or I (log M) b M b r b r What is this . . . ancient hieroglyphics or Greek? It is neither, of course, as any math major can tell you. It is simply the formula for finding the logarithm of the root of a number. We proudly salute Madison's mathematical wizards for the fine job they do in this ever-important, ever-progressing field. H LANGUAGES, LIBRARIANS, ARTS Conjugations, verbs, infinitives . . . the mastery of a foreign language is truly an art. French, Latin, and Spanish evolve under the direction of Mrs. Trescott and Mr. Grafel. Students in these classes are constantly reminded of the fine arts by the lovely paintings which grace our halls. We thank Mr. Heichel for his fine direction in art and yearbook activities. To meet the problems of research and reading material, our library, under the direction of Mrs. Delong, has expanded and improved its facilities. Row One: Mrs. Trescott, Mrs. Delong. Row Two: Mr. Heichel. Mr. Grafel. 7 Row One: Mrs. Abesheheen, Mr. Walther, Mrs. Rust. Row Two: Mr. Webb, Mr. Andrews, Mr. Byers, Mr. Guy. ENGLISH Although many students are taking a foreign lan- guage, there are many of us still trying to master our native tongue, English. To meet the demands of a growing school, the English Department has added two new teachers, a course in remedial reading and a chance to overcome the barriers of poor speech. 8 Miss Shafer, Home Economics; Mr. Orchard. Driver Training; Mr. Kandare and Mr. J. Mackey. Industrial Arts. Row One: Mrs. Acker, Home Economics and Commercial; Mrs. Featherinqham, Physical Education. Row Two: Mr. Pethtel. Physical Education; Mr. Featheringham, Commercial. 9 DRIVER’S TRAINING INDUSTRIAL ARTS HOME ECONOMICS Crash! Is that a pan dropping? A hammer falling to the floor? Or our driver training car hitting a tree? No matter which it is, the year is still young and the courses are still unfamiliar. By the end of the year, however, the students in Industrial Arts, Driver's Training, and Home Economics are well-versed in manipulating their tools whether it be a hammer, pan or car. PHYSICAL EDUCATION COMMERCIAL Madison is very proud of the merger which took place last September fifth. Miss Schieda, our gymnastic instructor, and Mr. Feathering- ham, our commercial teacher, incorporated their co-ordinating talents to form the concern of Featheringham and Featheringham. The Featheringhams are assisted in their school chores by Mrs. Acker of our commercial de- partment, and Mr. Pethtel of the Boy's Physi- cal Education Department. Mrs. Behm, Mr. Quiggle. Mr. Ferencz. Mr. Winne. SCIENCE . . . From General Science to Physics, the students can feel the impact of the scientific phenomena occurring in the world today. Although he is overwhelmed with the enormity of subject matter, our scientific staff has coped with the situation and produced some of the most competent science students in the county. SOCIAL STUDIES Around the world in I 80 days! This is the all-expense paid tour offered to students who take one of the many social studies courses provided. Your own seat becomes the magic carpet which takes you to new adventures in the past and gives you a look at your place in society today. Row One: Mr. Martin, Miss McCracken, Mr. White, Mr. Foote. Row Two: Mr. Winton, Mr. Hribar, Mr. Rulend. 11 The new Industrial Arts wing as it looked at the start of this school yeai NEW SHOP WING Wayne Roper takes readings from the board in the new electrical section at the shop. 12 Madison Memorial High School salutes the generous people of Madi- son for supplying the money to enlarge our mechanical arts building. With the new forty by six foot shop addition, the mechanical arts depart- ment is able to offer three separate areas of development. In addition to our former wood and drafting area, we are now intro- ducing an all metal section which includes courses in sheetmetal, ore and glass welding, electricity, machine shop and automotives. New equipment includes a bench shear which cuts metal to one-six- teenth of an inch, a brake for bending metal, three machine lathes and a shaper which cuts metal vertically to an angle. The teachers of mechanical arts now have their own private offices in their own building. It is also interesting to note that our own high school boys are doing much of the final work themselves. Mr. Mackey demonstrates the working parts of new lathes in metals section of shop. 13 Steering Committee Front, Mr Barr, Mr. Stoll, Mr. Quiggle. Rear. Mrs. Behm. Ardythe Ashley. Jim He'iduk, Lenore Laslco at the wheel. OPERATION STADIUM A dream come true! Operation Stadium, the project started by the students, under the Steering Committee's leadership is a success! The students of Madison Memorial High School saw their dream realized on September 18th for that was the night that the Memorial Stadium was dedicated. During the school years 1958-1960, Operation Stadium was the project of the entire school. All the students and many outside groups supported this worthy endeavor. We all wanted our football field to be a part of our high school! Money was raised in a variety of ways. The class of '59 started the ball rolling by donating the scoreboard. Each of the classes pledged a certain amount with the gold star going to the class of '64. These students, without a penny in their treasury, really got out and worked. They sold everything that was sellable and came in. with the’second highest pledge! We are proud of our enthusiastic younger classmates! 14 Dances and paid assemblies played a major part in collecting money and attaining our goal. One of the first projects of Operation Stadium'' was the sale of Madison Press subscriptions. The Madison Press gave us a wonderful deal on these, and we would like to extend our sincere thanks for their generous assistance. We would also like to thank the Booster Club for their contributions, interest and kindness. The groups and clubs within the school that fulfilled their pledges are: The Key Club, The Student Council, The Senior Tri-Hi-Y, and the Athletic Association. Yes, each of us can feel a glow of success and self-pride when we see that the dream of '59 is now reality! The Memorial Stadium was a truly great achievement! SENIORS The hands that will mold the future. Each year is its own, yet it is all years put together; from a distinguished past we inherit the promise of a brilliant future! CLA PLA Stage Door, the Junior Class Play, was cast, produced, and directed by Mr. Glenn Andrews. The juniors worked diligently at creating the scen- ery and drilling the participants for this major production involv- ing a thirty-member cast. The stage, set as the drawing room of a boarding house for ac- tresses—the Footlights Club —became the platform from which Zona Heise delivered an outstanding performance as she executed the lead role of a stage-struck actress. Congratu- lations are also in order for each and every member of the cast, who all put forth an ut- most effort to achieve the grand success that met the play in its two-day run. Mr. Andrews contemplates the outcome of his next production. SS Y This page compliments of Diamond Alkali Company. CAULDRON STAFF In September when school began, the Cauldron Staff was already hard at work gathering material for the Cauldron. The merchants had to be con- tacted and asked to advertise or sponsor pages. After this was done the staff began to take orders for the Cauldron. While everyone else was busy selling Cauldrons, Nick Square (Art Editor who is not pictured) began laying out the first pages of the book. After four months of hard work the final pages were completed, the pictures were developed, and the layout was finished. Everyone on the staff breathed a sigh of relief when the finished copy was finally mailed to the publishers. The Cauldron Staff wishes to thank Mr. Heichel for all the extra time and patience he spent with us in order that we might bring you this yearbook. OUR EDITOR Lilly Vogrig 57 OUR MUSIC M.M.H.S. The following week Madison was host to the Lake County Western Reserve League Preview. This included games between Kirtland and Chardon; Madison and Perry. The Kirtland-Chardon game ended in a no point tie, and Madison beat Perry 14 to 0. An independent game between Madison and Geneva proved disappointing to the Madison fans as it ended in a 16 to 6 victory for Geneva. Madison's touch- down was scored by Biscotti who caught a short pass from Bukky and soared overi the line for a touchdown. Madison traveled-fo Jefferson for her first league game. Madison used Re air route while on offense and the Bukky-Biscotti combination worked again as Unwin. - 64 Madison romped over Spencer at her first home W.R.L. game. Early in the first quarter Len Izzarelli carried the pigskin over the line for our first touchdown. Bukky tossed to Biscotti for the second. Fullback Dick Fischer broke loose in the fourth quar- ter for our last touchdown. Madison lived up to the sportswriters' predictions and came out on top, 24-0. On a muddy Homecoming field, the Bluestreaks tangled with Chardon Hilltoppers, and d ue to slippery conditions the action was limited and the game ended in a no point tie. In their next game the Bluestreaks got off to a terrific start as Len Izzarelli galloped 65 yards in the first quarter for a touchdown. In the final quarter the Bukky-Biscotti combination worked once again but to no avail, for Madison came out on the bottom as Ashtabula Harbor beat Madison 32-14. The Bluestreaks played an excellent defensive game as they held Edgewood, the leading league team, to only 6 points. Dick Fischer ran 65 yards into the end zone for a thrilling touchdown. Bukky and Biscotti connected for a touchdown, which to the Streak's great dismay, was ruled no good. The Madison-Perry game was a gigantic success for the Streaks because we won the game and also regained possession of the traditional Little Brown Jug for another year. John Bukky and Dick Fischer combined efforts by scoring the total 28 points. On a cold Friday afternoon, the Streaks traveled to Kirtland for their last W.R.L. game of the season. The team struggled to break Kirtland's defensive line but their efforts were in vain. Our last game was played against Ashtabula St. John and although the Streaks pushed ahead in the second quarter, St. John bounced back to wrap up a hard-won victory. The team showed steady improvement and was a well- working unit of cooperation and team effort. The outcome of our season will be a featured item in the yearbook supplement. The main attrac- tion was a 3-dimensional waterfalls ovei which tumbled a constant stream of water lit by pastel blue spotlights. Fea turing the music of George Parrish's 13-piece orchestra, the occasion was well-attended and successful. King Glenn H arvey and Queen Martha Elliott reigned over the festive affair. The post-prom party, sponsored by the high school P.T.A., featured a lively en- tertainment program directed by Joe Finan, and free food for all attending. 75 76 SUPPORT OUR ADVERTISERS HI-WAY CLEANERS FAST ACTION l-HOUR DRY CLEANING CASH AND CARRY QUALITY CLEANING AT POPULAR PRICES Route 20 North Madison, Ohio Hazel 8-5100 PICK UP AND DELIVERY SERVICE AVAILABLE I-DAY SHOE AND SHIRT SERVICE Open Daily 8 a.m. Until 6 p.m. GAS COKE AND CHEMICAL WORKERS Local 12231 District 50 Serving You and Your Community DUFFY’S Congratulations to the Senior Class Your favorite foods EUCLID ELECTRIC Legal Beverages MANUFACTURING COMPANY Phone HA 8-2813 Edwards Street Route 84-West Main Street Madison, Ohio Madison, Ohio UNIONVILLE LUMBER County Line Road HA 8-2236 ELLIS PHARMACY Madison's Original Rexall Pharmacy Fred C.
