SCHOOL M A D I S 0 N OHIO T E C T S • 13124 SHAKER SO. , CLEVELAND, 0. NORMA BUKKY Editor EDITOR'S NOTE As editor of the 1956 Cauldron, I wish to express my sin- cere thanks to the annual staff for their time and effort they so willingly offered to make this yearbook possible. Also to Mrs. Ruland, for her fine assistance as advisor and to the complete administration for their great understanding and co-operation. As you leaf through this annual, you will be guided by our theme, progress, which is now being made throughout our school system by progressing to a better school and a better education for all of us. From little wheels” as underclassmen, to big wheels” as seniors, progress is thus distinguished. I hope this Cauldron will be an everlasting memento of your days at Madison High. $ Qjtnuai 956 JWeajutta, 7 ucCctio t MADISON MEMORIAL HIGH SCHOOL, MADISON, OHIO Clima Matei Oh, we love our Alma Mater, Alma Mater fair and true, And though we wander far away We’ll often think of you. From the day we entered high school To the day we’ll say good-bye, Our memories have gathered Like the clouds in the sky. Though life be sad or gay, Our thoughts will always be Among the friends we knew so very well. No matter where we roam, No matter where we stray Our memories of Madison will stay. Oh, we love our Alma Mater, Alma Mater fair and true, And though we wander far away We’ll often think of you. 2 3uMe of Contenta. laU........... We were no exception. We wanted to do away with some of the old stand by traditions. We wanted to expand our yearbook and modernize it to go with our High School of 1956, constantly changing. Consequently, one of the first things that we decided was the idea of Progress as our theme. This we symbolized by the use of wheels represented on the cover and throughout the book’s pages. The end papers show the blue prints of our present and future building additions. Many outstanding changes have been made in our Cauldron. Our dedication was not to single out and honor one individual, but rather to seek out the source of our progress, that everyone may become more aware of to whom we owe this change. We realize that our growth is due to the perspective of our community. Therefore, the 1956 Cauldron staff, with great respect wishes to pay tribute to the Madison Community by dedicating our yearbook to them. As the Senior closes another door in the process of learning, the realization that many new doors are still to be opened, faces him. Soon he will put to test the value of the knowledge acquired during the past four years. Now, more than ever before, he must begin to decide how he will cope with the situations and problems of a rapidly changing world. Our yearbook is the link between the accomplishments of the past, and known and unknown hurdles to be jumped and goals to be achieved, in the future. 4 Udmitu faatuui tBaxvcd o-f, Education Left to Right. Our class officers were Bob Booth, President; Wanda Atkin, Vice-President; Ronnie Stella, Secre- tary; Dick Schaepe, Treasurer; and Student Council Representative, Russel Warner. We had two money making activities. The first was the Soc Hop, in which everyone came and danced in his socks and casual clothes — More Fun! !. We also held a Christmas Dance at H.N.K. School with a notable orchestra playing. Everyone came in their Sunday bests, and spent a very enjoyable evening dancing. A class party was held at the High School but not too many attended. Those w'ho did come had a lot of fun playing games, and also, we girls taught the bashful boys how to dance. Our class picnic was held at Madison Township Park. We were very sorry to see the ye r come to a close, but we looked forward to another successful year. Sophomores — We are aging! Now we have au- thority to push the Freshmen around, but of course we were very considerate and pushed very lightly. Our class officers for this year were Gene Walker, President; Nancy Dixon, Vice-President; Kathy Jakse, Secretary; Don Dodge, Treasurer; and Student Coun- cil Representatives were Larry Donaldson and Jerry Fedele. We held three money making events this year. First, the annual Talent Show—Boy, some talent! A Daisy Mae Dance was held at the High School. The girls asked the fellas and we danced in Rags.” Last of all, we held a Skating Party at Austinburg, which proved to be very successful. This year our picnic was held at Tuttle Park. Juniors — This year was our busiest year as far as money making went. We had to put on a successful Prom for our wonderful friends — the Seniors” Our class officers were Bob Booth, President; Mary Peterson, Vice-President; Sue Greene, Secretary; Bar- bara Willm, Treasurer; and Janet McIntosh, Larry Donaldson, and Barbara Bush represented us in Stu- dent Council. We sold magazines, fruit cakes, candy, and held bake sales. Our basketball homecoming was held at North Madison School Gym, with Tommy Edwards WERE’’ disc-jockey, playing records. Nancy Dixon was crowned queen, while her attendants were Sandy Bukky, Barbara Zellers, Barbara Hasse, and Sally Mavko. Our class party was held at the High School. Our Junior Play, directed by Mr. Theodore Grafel, was one of the biggest events of the year. Everyone who worked with the play really had fun! Play prac- tice evejy night kept us busy, but the performances showed that we had not worked in vain, for the cast was well commended for an excellent job. At last the Big Night arrived — Junior-Senior Prom —May 21st, held at the Madison Country Club. Phil June’s eight-piece orchestra really made a hit!! The dance floor was beautifully decorated with roses, for our theme Moonlight and Roses.” Following the Prom, the Post-Party was held at the Elks Club in Painesville until four-thirty A. M. After breakfast we all went home and slept the rest of the weekend! Our class picnic was held at Township Park. Seniors — The big year has arrived! We are dig- nified, glorious, Seniors.” Oh — do we think we're something! We are the first Senior class to have such a new and modern addition to our school. It was just like going to a new school, for we had to become adjusted all over again and what fun we had exploring all the new rooms and new equipment. Our class officers this year are Nancy Dixon, Presi- dent; Rita Bebout, Vice-President; Norma Bukky, Secretary; and Sue Greene, Treasurer. Our representa- tives to Student Council are Barbara Bush, Sue Greene, Russel Warner, and Bob Booth. On October 19 and 20 we, very proudly, made our way to Hunter’s Studio and posed for our Senior Picture ” This really proved to us that we had at last made the grade ” For many of us, this was rather a sad venture, for we knew now that we were in our last year and though many plan to go to college, still the chances of being together again seem very vague. We started the school activities with the Football Homecoming held November 4, at Homer Nash Kim- ball School. Mary Jean Roper was crowned queen, and her attendants were Sue Greene, Nancy Gibbon, Nancy Dixon, and Barbara Bush. Phil June’s four- piece orchestra furnished the music for dancing. This was a very happy occasion for all the seniors for we had won the game, and were almost sure of capturing the 1956 League Championship, which we did the next week by beating Wickliffe —What a game!! By the way, while we’re on the subject of Football,” we are very proud to say that the Blue Streaks were defeated only once during the whole season, and then, only by one point. We were also the first Madison team to win the championship with a nine-team league.” I think the boys deserve a pat- on-the-back, don’t you? Congratulations Boys! Our class party was held March 9, at the high school. We danced, and of course ate refreshments. On April 2, our band members left us for a week to parade at Washington for the Cherry Blossom Fes- tival. We missed their melodious music ringing through the corridors during 5th period, but were glad they could attend such an honored affair. Our Senior Class Play was held in April, under the direction of Mrs. Trescott. This play also required much time and considerable effort from the cast, but again the results were very good. We never thought we would see the day — but we did — June 5th — COMMENCEMENT” — Yes, our high school days are over, and as we look back on all the parties, get-togethers, and games, it is difficult for us to realize that we will soon be going our separate ways. All our victories and triumphs will just be memories, but those memories will stay with us for- ever. Yes, never before had we really appreciated all the time, and effort spent on us by our teacher. It is due to their patience and willingness to teach us a few of the necessary things in life, that wre have graduated, and are able to face realism. To them, we owe a great deal of credit. So, as we leave our Alma Mater, we express our thanks to our advisors, and leave a word of advice to our underclassmen —Listen to your teacher, he might know just a little more than you think you know. We leave you now hoping to apply our class motto to our future careers — Today we follow; tomorrow we lead.” MOST ATHLETIC Lynn Bernard Mary Peterson MOST TALKATIVE Dick Schaepe Kay Keyse MOST VERSATILE Bob Booth Nancy Dixon MOST LIKELY TO SUCCEED Roy Winfield Wanda Atkin THREE OLD MAID AUNTS1' SCENE The living room of the Murray Home ------ The present. The year before was a set-back for Madison but the team and the coaches, determined to win, practiced hard daily and by the time of the first game we had a fine looking team. SEPTEMBER 9: Our season opened with the W. R. L. Preview on our own field. Our team looked fine but time ran out before we could score. The Wickliffe Blue Devils set us back, 6-0. SEPTEMBER 16: Our first league game we traveled to Spencer for our first big victory over the Wildcats. Earl Smith paved the way that night with three touchdowns. The first was a 60-yard pass-play from Jacobson to Smith. Next was Smith running 20 yards over and the final tally came on a 43-yard pass-play from Jacobson to Smith which won the game for us. Home for the night with a 19-14 victory over the rough Wildcats. SEPTEMBER 23: On to fight the Perry Pirates, who were de- termined to win. This was one we wanted to win more than ever too. Bobby Booth raced 66 yards and 32 yards for two touchdowns — Danny Rand plunged over the line for a one-yard touchdown. Later on Dave Jacobson intercepted a pass from Perry and ran 30 yards for the final touchdown. Perry recovered a fumble to make their only score. We left the Pirates’ home nursing a 24-6 swamping and a slightly damaged goal post. SEPTEMBER 30: We entertained the Jefferson Falcons for our next league game. Lynn Bernard tallied the first touchdown on a 38-yard pass-play from Bobby Booth. Later Booth ran over for two more. We battled the Falcons all the way but they managed to beat us by a one point final score, 20-19. Our unbeaten season record had been ruined. OCTOBER 4: After a loss our spirit was greater than ever. The Bulldogs from Edgewood came into town with a big team. Plays brought us up to the 2- yard line where Bobby Booth took it over for number one. Next Earl Smith ran 22 yards for number two. Top-scorer, Bobby Booth stepped in for number 3 with a 63-yard run for the final. The Bulldogs played equally well and the final gun sounded with a 19-19 tie. OCTOBER 14: The West Geauga Wolverines visited the Blue Streaks and carried home a 12-0 loss. Mouse” Bernard carried the pigskin over on a 51-yard pass-play from Booth. Then mighty Jerry Fedele stepped into the end zone for a 17-yard touch- down. OCTOBER 20: We dubbed the Kirtland Hornets on our field for a 14-6 victory. A couple touchdowns were called back but Booth ran over to make two count. Our steam was really boiling now and we were looking ahead to the championship. OCTOBER 28: On to Chardon for a game we had to win to keep in championship running. We took measure to the Hilltoppers team and won — going home with a big 12-7 victory. Jerry Fedele galloped 40 yards for the first tally and on a 44-yard sweep, Old Faithful” Bobby Booth made the final one. NOVEMBER 4: This was our Homecoming game and we had to win. We battled the Burton Mapleleafs on a muddy gridiron which hampered much progress for either team. But the firing Blue Streaks handed the Mapleleafs a 15-0 setback after Booth ran 53 yards for the first and Keith Groves ran over for another. NOVEMBER 11: We took a breather as we swamped the Wick- liffe Blue Devils 26-0 in our final game and the one that handed the well-deserved Blue Streaks the Western Reserve Championship Title. This game was one both the boys and the coaches really wanted to win more than any other. Five sparks kindled the victory that night. First of all Earl Smith took a 10-yd. sweep, then a 53-yd. pass-play from Booth to Bernard and over. Fedele came back with a 21-yard dive for the third and Groves stepped over for the final tally. The strong Madison defense held the Blue Devils away from the end zone and as the final gun sounded we sent the Blue Devils limping to their dressing rooms with a 26-0 licking and home for us with a championship. This ended our season with 7 wins, 1 loss, and 1 tie, a record that we will long be proud of and one of the finest in the history at Madison High. The Blue Streaks had what it takes to win this year; spirit, good team- work, and a fine coach. We’re proud of them and of Coach Hribar. 40 ‘pc. 3tigA 5aat6a£l First Row, Left to Right: Ray Headley, John Bukky, Rollin Alexander, Ronnie Bernard, Charles Satterfield, Bill Warner, Ted McCormak, Gary Carl, Dick Fischer. Coach Winton’s boys lacked height, but they made up for it with speed against very strong league competition. The squad’s tallest eager was Ace’ Eddie Naughton, 5' 11 who led the Blue Streak scor- ing all the way. The only two seniors on the team, Lynn Mouse Bernard and Bobby Booth played their best to wind up their high school playing. Considering the height of the eleven cagers this year has proved to be one that will be re- membered for the fine performance of the team in action. The record turned out better than could be expected with a team of midgets. To be thanked is our fine coach, Mr. Winton who did a splendid job of coaching our Madison Blue Streaks. As the governing body of Madison High School, we were faced with many situations and problems. Handling noon recreation and movies, sponsoring the cheerleaders, supervising the hallguards, and revising the constitution were only a few of the things we tackled. Immediate worries were dispelled when we vere all relaxed at the Christmas dance, which we sponsored to support the “Coach Hribar Fund.” President Bob Booth, and our advisor, Mr. Quiggle did a very good job of keeping our arguments from getting out of hand. Though we expected to find grey hairs when we peered into the mirror, by the end of the year, we were unchanged physically — but our minds were well-filled with rules and regulations. Anyway, we all got a lot of enjoyment out of exercising our legislature and administrative powers for what we hoped was the good of the students. Hall guards are chosen from the three upper grades, on their dependability, citi- zenship, and honesty. A hall guard’s duties consist of checking passes, lockers, keeping the halls orderly and directing hall traffic between periods. Under the supervision of Eddie Naughton, with Mr. Quiggle as advisor, the hall guards have regular meetings and discuss their problems and means of solving them. 51 SxAeiwtdMp, First Row, Left to Right: Sue Greene, Karen Bell, Larry Donaldson, Barbara Bush, Nancy Dixon, Wanda Atkin. All kidding aside, we do owe the Service Club a good deal of thanks. The Blue Streak Band owes much to Mr. Barr, who made our year a successful one. We presented concerts and participated in the annual music contest along with many other activities. Our main project this year was raising funds for our trip to the U. S. Capitol to march in the Cherry Blossom Festival.” Bake sales, dinners, fish fries and Christmas card sales are only a few of our fund raising activities. We senior band members extend a big hand of thanks to Mr. Barr for making our last year in band a happy and very success- ful one. With Christmas trees both upstairs and downstairs, and various holiday scenes on most of the windows our school had a very festive appearance. 68 QJtwSACA Library Aid With Mrs. Hemp el Typing With Mrs. Eisbrenner Grant me a steady hand and watchful eye, That no man shall be hurt when I pass by. 70 Thou gavest life, and I pray no act of mine May take away or mar that gift of Thine.
