IN MEMORIAM W fE, the class of 1953, wish to show our respect, and deep admiration for Olga Sekulich, whose companionship we enjoyed and whose memory we will always cherish. 2 ALMA MATER Green Ridge Florist Jack Jill Children Oh, we love our Alma Mater, Alma Mater fair and true, And though we wander far away We’ll often think of you. From the day we entered high school To the day we’ll say good-bye, Our memories have gathered Like the clouds in the sky. Though life be sad or gay Our thoughts will always be Among the friends we knew so very well. No matter where we roam, No matter where we stray, Our memories of Madison will stay. Oh, we love our Alma Mater, Alma Mater fair and true, And though we wander far away We’ll often think of you. Best Wishes Graduates of '53 Madison, O. N. Madison, O. S a mirror reflects the faces of those who come before it, so do the schools of a com- munity reflect the hopes and ideals of the people of that community. We of the faculty who are responsible for the details of the actual functioning of the schools recognize, with a great deal of gratification, the help received from the hosts of people who both as individuals and as members of groups have always stood ready and willing. Our program, however, is not for the present but its full import will be realized for many years, or until the present school citizens become citizens active in the democracy. Our today's foundations and plans must be in the light of our future possible needs. Private whims and prejudices have no place in an impartial project such as school plan- ning and progress. Personal jealousy and selfishness will never help build an enduring pro- gram of any kind. The lethargy of non-interest is deadly to any democratic organization. We appreciate then, the assistance of our fathers and mothers of today--whether they be board of education members, parent-teacher association officers, or only active mem- bers of these or any other groups of our common interest. Our only care is that we may continue to receive their sincere, thoughtful and unselfish support; not in behalf of those who plan and toil, but in the interest of those for whom we all strive--the men and women of tomorrow. Eckerle Plumbing Heating Inc. Madison, O. 19 71 S I turn the pages of my “Diary. ” I see that we were the first eighth grade class to come to the high school building. We slowly crept into the school feeling not wanted and out of place. But we had a successful year by winning the Stunt Night Award and by having a class party at Madison-on-the-Lake, thus bring- ing a close to our eighth grade year at High School. We walked into school to start our Freshman year with big hopes of achievement. The Class officers were elected as follows: Pres. Bill Bittner, Vice President, Jim Fenalson, Secretary Donna Kent, Treasurer David Jones. We started the year with a Skating Party and everyone enjoyed themselves to the maximum. We had other activities with a class party at the end of the year, making the 9th grade year a com- plete success. We started our Sophomore year with a Skating Party and the annual Soph. Carnival. There were two side shows at the carnival, a Freak Show which went over big and a Cake Walk bringing the evening to a close. Class Officers were as follows: Pres. David Behm, Vice Pres. Alfred Nicely, Secretary Bob Kemerait, Treas. Bill Bittner. The year was completed with a class party at Madison-on-the Lake. Our Junior year was a big year. It meant work, so we all dug in and started our most difficult year. We sold stationery and candy in the halls at noon. We also sold magazines in which everyone worked hard and made it our most success- ful activity. We sponsored a play called Jumping Jupiter under the direction of Mr. Grafel. The Class Officers were Pres. Barb Keyse, Vice President Bill Bittner, Sec. Mary Jo McCormick, Treas. Alfred Nicely. We published a newspaper called the Blue White, and started the canteens. Then came the event we had worked so hard for, the Junior and Senior Prom, which was held at Manakiki Country Club. It was a beautiful prom and we know everyone that attended will remember it after they leave school. The event was brought to a close with everyone going to the Elks Club in Painesville for breakfast. Bill Bittner and Alfred Nicely were chosen to attend Boys' State. Carolyn Ritola was chosen for Girls' State. We completed the year with a class party at Madison-on-the-Lake. On a bright and beautiful day a group of very happy seniors walked into High School. “Seniors!!!' did I say Seniors. Why, it just seemed like yesterday that this same group of studenffe had crept into the building feeling very insignificant. We started the year with the following Class Officers: Pres. Alfred Nicely, Vice Pres. William Donaldson, Sec. Patricia Jopko, Treas. David Jones. We ended the Football season with the annual Homecoming Dance, which we think was the best Madison High has ever had. The Senior Cheerleaders planned a big Pep Rally the night before the Homecoming Game with Perry. It was a great success and we hope it will continue as an annual event at M. M. H. S. We also, sponsored a New Year's Eve Formal with the Juniors. We sold milk in the halls at noon, also Christmas Cards. We presented the Senior Play under the Direction of Mrs. Trescott. And then came the big day May 29, which was Graduation Day. Thus, completing our school days at Madison High School. I hope you make a great success of your business. I was back to Madison over the Christmas Holidays and I was lucky enough to get lots of news about our classmates. Knowing how interested you've always been in everything that concerns our class, I will attempt to tell you all the news. Edythe Somnitz and her husband have just moved into an ultra modern home on Hubbard Road built by Jack Morris and Co. Barbara Keyse never fulfilled her am- bition to become a model but she certainly is a model wife and mother. Evelyn Brainard is also happily married. David Behm has just been chosen to play in the Olympics next year. I sure hope he helps the United States to come through with fly- ing colors. Charles Eisenhart and Jim Marshall have formed a double partnership. They race their famous racing car “Speed Demon and they own a farm as a hobby. Nancy Woods has just won the National Ladies Wrestling Championship. She has ob- tained great fame through the efforts of her manager, Joanne Harris. Carol Wickert, Patty Jopko, and Marilyn Quirk are now operating a secretarial school in Cleveland and Sally Greene is an airline hostess for T. W. A. I heard that Gary Bukkey had joined a Texas Rodeo that plans to tour the world. I saw Donna Kent on the street one day. She is teaching commercial subjects at M. M. H. S. She told me Vivian Barber was a physical education teacher at a big school in Chicago. She also told me that her brother, Bob Kent, is the local bar- ber. Compliments of inesville Gail G. Grant Co. 22 Oh I read in the Madison Press that Don Doran is playing professional basketball. I understand that Bill Donaldson travels with him as his manager. I was surprised to read that Bob Kenerait has made the Air Force his career and Permelia Dixon has realized her ambition of joining the Wacs. The paper also carried a lengthy article telling about Gloria Smith's art exhibition at the Cleveland Museum of Art. On Christmas Eve I attended services at the Baptist Church. The excellent sermon was given by Rev. Robert Wickert. While I was at Church I talked to Al- fred Nicely who happened to be in Madison for the weekend. He is the chief sur- geon at John Hopkins Hospital. He said Steve Drzik is an up and coming lawyer in Chicago. He hopes to enter politics before too long. Alfred also told me Frank Stanonik owned the Tool and Dye Co. in Paines ville and Paul Lutz owned his own gas station which is also in Painesville. Willie, Eli, and Jack Cone have just opened a big hunting lodge in Canada. I hear the lodge is a wonderful vacation spot. John Davidson, Mario Izzarelli, and Lynn Joiner are all happily married and they each own a farm in Madison. Bill Bittner is President of the Diamond Alkali Co. and Dick Bidlack is the Vice President. Jean Morris and Mary Jo McCormick are their private Secretaries. Gee, it seems good to hear that so many of our classmates are making good in the world. The only four I haven’t heard about are David Jones, Bob Snyder, Carl Fobeli, and Carolyn Bryer, but I imagine they have also made a success of their lives. Of course you know Jim Fenlason is a laboratory technician here in the hospital and a very good one too. Alex Sipos is busy doing research on Tuberculosis here. Pat Blackburn and I like nursing very much. We are hoping you will come to visit us soon. Good luck to you. As ever, Your friend, Carolyn Ritola Mary Ann, Jeweler Beauty Shop Madison, O Wilsons Corner Store 23 N. Madison, O JUNIOR PLAY N the evening of November 21st, the Junior Class presented the play, “RoomNo. 13. ” It was directed by Mr. Ted Graf el. If Janet Harris and Sally Hall had only known what awaited them, they would never have accepted the strange invitation of Janet’s uncle, Professor Snow, to visit him in his old home on the Hudson; nor would Jim Stevens, a young author, have begged the profes- sor to rent him a room there so he might live in a proper atmosphere for his next novel. The mysterious tramp who takes pleasure in hiding in chests and basements, turns out to be a detective. Madam Zelda conducts a seance to talk with her good friends, the spirits. Josh and Lizzie Spriggins, Professor Snow’s two creaky servants, search for their pets at all hours of the night. Room No. 13 ends happily for all, as Sally and her tramp round up the professor and his companions, who appear quite content to be returned to the asylum from which they escaped and Janet falls for the young author who finds in her, the answer to all his dreams. MAJORETTES ji FTER spending a week at camp the Madison High School Band returned to a season of very hard work. The job the band undertook was to provide half time entertainment at the football games. During this football season the five majorettes got new uniforms which added greatly to the show. As soon as football season was over the band started with working on its winter concert music. The concert music went over very well and so the band considered its winter season as successful as the football season had been. A band banquet was held by the Band Patrons Club. Twelve of the band members went to the county all star band which was a good representation for a school our size. It is hoped that the band will be able to attend camp again next summer and have as success- ful a year as it had this year. Patricks Madison, O. H. P. Reiaerts Madison, O. 37 first and one of the biggest events of the year was the Homecoming Dance which brought to a close the football season. The dance was held November 7 after the Perry-Madison game. Pat Blackburn was crowned 1952 Homecoming Queen. Her attendants were Sally Greene, Patty Jopko, Mary Jo McCormick and Carolyn Ritola. The escorts were cap- tain Dave Behm, John Davidson, Robert Kemerait, Mario Izzarelli and Bill Bittner. Continued Success and Happiness R.S. St. John Realty N. Congratulations I THE MILLER REALTY COMPANY Established 1908 Realtors Insurors Main Office Geneva, O. 45 SPORTS HISTORY FOOTBALL PERRY The Madison Blue Streaks started their successful season with a stunning 31-0 rout of arch-rival Perry. Mario Izzarelli, the Streak’s leading ground gainer of 1952 led the way by scoring three touchdowns in the first half. Steve Drzik scored one in the third quarter and a Dave Behm to Norm Smith pass with a conversion by Smith ended the scoring. RIVERSIDE The Streaks then played host to Riverside, a very formidable opponent and cost a heart- breaking decision in the closing minute on a desperation pass 13-7. Madison broke the ice on a forward pass from Behm to Izzarelli. This now evened their record at 1 win, 1 loss. KIRTLAND The Blue Streaks journeyed to Kirtland for an afternoon game with the Hornets. The Streaks experienced their worst game of the season in losing to Kirtland 13-0. The game was a scoreless dead-lock the first half, but the Hornet’s ground attack proved too much for Madison as they gave up. Two touchdowns and an extra point making the score 13-0. SPENCER The Streaks entertained the Spencer Wildcats and went on a scoring spree defeating them 39-6. Hayes started the scoring with a pass to Frank Stanonik. The second touch- down was scored on a pass from Smith to Stanonik. In the second quarter, Dave Hayes scored two touchdowns. On the most spectacular play of the game Izzarelli exploded through the middle for an 83 yrd. touchdown run. Behm’s pass to Izzarelli capped the Madison scoring. EDGEWOOD Madison traveled to Astabula Harbor for a Saturday night engagement with Edgewood’s Bulldogs. It was a see-saw battle all the way with Behm’s last-minute areial to Stanonik, giving the Streaks the needed edge. Behm scored the first three touchdowns on end runs. This victory put the team over the .500 mark with three victories in five outings. CHARDON With three important Western Reserve League games coming up and with Madison at the bottom of the League, the Streaks had their work cut out for them. Chardon visited Madison and the Streaks taught them a football lesson in rolling over the Hilltoppers 33- 6. Mario Izzarelli put on a great exhibition of broken-field running by scoring two touch- downs and receiving a pass from Behm for a third. Behm scored one and passed to Jerry Hejduk for the last tally. WICKLIFFE Having only two games left in the season, Madison was determined not to be defeated, as a desperation pass in the last five seconds of play nipped a very alert and battling Wickliffe eleven 12 to 6. The pass going from Behm to Stanonik for twenty yeard and the score. Izzarelli scored early in the second quarter as the Streaks moved into a three way tie for first place. PERRY This being the last game for eleven boys on the team, the Streaks, a little nervous but sound, edged a fighting Perry team 13-12. Quarterback Dave Behm bowed out his season in a good manner scoring the first touchdown. The try for the extra point failed. Late in the third quarter a blocked Perry punt made things a little easier, as the Streaks moved 46 downfield and Bittner doing the honors of scoring the final touchdown. The extra point was good, and the Streaks held their lead till the end of the game. The team had a very successful season ending up with a 7-2 record and a tie for the championship with Kirtland. They completed another great season under coach Bernie Rickleman. BASKETBALL 71FTER graduating four players last year, Madison started a heavy schedule. They lacked experience, having only Dave Behm returning, a lot istobe expectedfrom the reserve power. The Streaks started off against a tough class A team at Mentor. The boys could not seem to get started as they dropped four more games in a row before win ning against the Dorset five. During the Christmas vacation the team was playing a heavy schedule at Riverside in the Christmas invitational tournament in which they fin- ished third, upsetting two powerful class teams, Riverside and Mentor. Still during va- cation the Streaks traveled to Youngstown North to play as guests of the unbeaten five, but the trip was too much as they fell 79-43. Lack of experience was a big handicap, but the Streaks had a fairly successful season under coach Cover. The Streaks had six seniors and seven juniors. Madison, O. 47 John Davidson John Davidson, No. 70, although he was plagued with a back injury all sea- son, John proved his foot- ball know-how, and re- ceived the outstanding lineman award. John is also a three year winner of the football monagram. His position was tackle. Bill Bittner Bill Bittner, No. 72, received his third mono- gram this year. Although receiving an injury in the second game this year, which permitted him to see only limited action, he fulfilled his job of fullback and line backer extremely well. SENIORS Frank Stanonik Frank Stanonik, No. 82, this was Frank’s first year, but he proved his value to the team, as time after time he caught those important passes at his end position. He re- ceived his first letter this year and turned in a fine job. Don Doran Don Doran, No. 85, this was Don’s second year on the team. Don was al- ways there, ready to show his enthusiasm for the game and he always came through in the pinch as tackle re- lief. Bill Donaldson Bill Donaldson, No. 95, as his number verifies, he was a large factor in the teams successful wing T. Bill played center in his Senior year and received a well earned letter. Mario Tzzarelli Mario Izzarelli, No. 68, a three year varsity man this year, he was the teams big gun. He was leading ground gainer and top scorer of the team. Mario always carried with him a constant threat of breaking into the clear to score. 48 Dave Behm Alfred Nicely Bob Kemerait Dave Behm, No. 69, the Captain of Madison's squad and an ace Quarterback this year. Dave’s football know how led Madison to a very successful year. He was also voted most valuable player of the year. Dave has played 3 years on varsity. Alfred Nicely, No. 78, Ace was on the team two years and received a letter in his Senior year. Ace played defensive end, and proved that size does not mean a thing, for he was always in there breaking up play after play. Bob Kemerait, No. 89, left tackle. A three year winner of a football letter, Bob was one of the clean- est and hardest playing boys on the team. Jim Marshall Jim Marshall, No. 81, played on the team at left guard two consecutive years, but only received a letter in Senior year. Jim always seemed to come through when yardage was needed. Steve Drzik Steve Drzik, No. 66, he came to Madison this year from Notre Dame School and won a first string half- back position. Steve was a dangerous runner, with great speed and did his share in helping Madison to a great season. 49 David Behm Bill Bittner Frank Stanonik Beaver carried the load of the Blue Streaks this sea- son despite a losing season and his limited height. He was the leading scorer on the team by maintaining an 18 point average in league play. It was Dave’s third year as a varsity player. Dud was a valuable as- set to the team because of his fine plan and snaring rebounds. Bill used a good jump shot to a fine advan- tage. He had a good average being the Streaks second high scorer. It was Bill’s third year as a varsity player. Shifty was a potential high scorer all season trailing Behm and Bittner by a slight percentage. A swell co-ordination boy Frank is to be credited with much of the team’s success. Alfred Nicely Don Doran Wilford Cone Ace was in and out of the first five all season long but while he was in there he played a swell game. A deadly foul shot he compiled a fine aver- age at the line. Spear's Grocery Store Goose was the team’s tallest player stretching 6'2 . Don got his share of rebounds and had several hot nights during the cam- paign contributing 18 points to the victory over Mentor at the Riverside Tourna- ment. This past season was Willie’s first season of basketball but he played many good minutes for the Blue Streaks. Madison, O.
