Hoping to bury his past sin of adul- tery, John Proctor tells Abigail Wil- liams, his former partner in love, to stop blackmailing him and to leave him alone. Concern for the well-being of their child brought Thomas and Ann Putnam (Bob Wilkes and Anjean- ette Gifford) to visit the ailing Betty Parns (Kelly Ford). Witchery And Evil Extra hours were needed for an emotional script portraying the Salem witch trials. Bright lights, and hours of hard work were just a few of the things the Madison Avenue Players experienced while preparing for their produc- tion of Arthur Miller ' s The Crucible . The play was set during the time of the Salem witch trials. Keturah Thompson, who played Abigail Wil- liams, accused people she disliked of being witches. After accusing someone of being a witch, Abigail and her friends would become possessed by evil spirits. Then the accused either confessed or were hanged. John Proctor, portrayed by David Waddell, tried to stop Abigail from having in- nocent people hanged, in- cluding his wife. His plans backfired and he was ac- cused of witchcraft. After three months in jail, John confessesed, but then ripped the confession up and was hung. It was very well done. You could feel all the emotion as you watched the play, said Nichole Smith. The script was a difficult one for the students to per- form. The roles required in- tense emotion. In order to make the pro- duction a success students spent hours perfecting scenes, learning their lines, and getting yelled at. The Crucible 29
