The Madison School District Board of Trustees is very proud of the record of Madison High School. No other High School in the state has achieved the record of success in drama, music, athletics, and academic performance as has Madison High School. This record of success has come in a time when funding for schools is very low and the successful ef- forts must come with the full support of students and their parents. Our school board is headed by Stan Sutton, a farmer, who has a great interest in continuing the high quality programs at the high school. Other members of the Board include the Ricks College Chief of Police, Jim Sessions; a College Professor, Brian Stanto n; a housewife, Doratha Young; and a Burton Dairyman, Mel Stewart. Serving the Board for half of the year before moving out of the district was Douglas Rasmussen, a local contractor. The Board will continue to support the students in their efforts to achieve PRIDE in all phases of the school program. The focus in the future will be in building the ACADEMIC program to the same high standards as our extra-curricular programs. Dr. Edward E. Hill Superintendent and Clerk of the Board 70 Dedicated maintenance and cafeteria staffs provided between-scenes adhesive to make Madison a top-rated educational facility. Plea- sant and cheerful, these members performed their demanding duties with the interests of the students as top priority. Stuck lockers, missed trash cans, finicky eaters — you name it — they took it in stride and continued to put the poli sh on for a glossy reflection of efficiency in the Bobcat lair. Bel Cantos This year the most prestigious choir of MHS gave concerts, performed in the com- munity, entertained at halftime, participated in festivals, and developed friendships. The president of the group, Alan Blackham, says, I think this year ' s Bel Cantos had a great deal of talent and a lot of respect for each other. Mr. Briggs ' favorite and only girls ' choir are the Musettes. They performed for womens ' club func- tions, church meetings, senior citizens ' centers and at three con- certs during the year. Musettes worked hard and ended the year successfully. 80 Bob Briggs led the 1982-83 Concert Choir from one singing season to the next. Even with the girls section outnumbering the boy ' s, the choir pulled together as a team and left the year with fly- ing colors. Ars Nova (originally called Jazz Choir but possibly changed to protect the innocent) was an early morning choir class for those who couldn ' t fit one in during the regular schedule or who wanted a jaz- zier type choir class. The choir worked really hard and by the end of the year turned out to be a success. 81 The Flag Team had a very successful year with its devoted members and a lot of early morning practices. Under his direction and with the help of his officers, approximately 100 members participated in promoting spirit in the school. This included: decorating lockers, making posters, wearing section outfits on game days, sitting in section at games, preparing assemblies and some half-time entertainment, and basically sparking enthusiastic spirit throughout the student body and supporting our teams. Varsity Girls ' Basketball The Varsity Girls ' Basketball team began the year with a new coach as well as several sophomore players. The team had both ex- perience and talent which took them all the way to the district Championship. Coach Garry Parkinson gave hints to the success of the team. At first, the girls had to change playing procedures and learn the methods of a new coach, but before long they started playing as a team. Each girl was given an individual position to be responsible for. Then we started to move the basketball and to shoot well. The January and February games showed the team making the high forties in shooting. One thing we used to raise pride and spirits were mottos. Three of these were: Winners never quit and quitters never win. Offense sells tickets- Defense wins games, If they can ' t score, they can ' t beat us-they may tie the game, but they can ' t win. Four outstanding players were: Alan Williams and Dave Chambers who were both District Champions, Ronnie Daniel who placed third in District, and Garth Ricks who had one first place and three second place wins at the first meets of the season. Coach Crittenden sums it up, Looking back on the wrestling season and my expectations, the team and each individual did pretty much as was expected. With each week we had important and better produc- tion. We knew that our chances in dual meets would be poor because of the number of weights that we couldn ' t fill. Our tournament schedule was one of the toughest ones around but we had good production from our wrestlers. We had fair success up until the Cross State Tournament, at which time our team suffered a big loss in that Garth Ricks broke his leg. It ' s a take down. Cross Country 122 CROSS COUNTRY Cross Country is the title given to the running sport which is gaining much popularity with both boys and girls in this area in recent years. Boys are expected to run five thousand meters; girls three thousand meters. The school or organization holding the meet will set the course. Competitors run across fields, over golf courses, up hills and down dales — wherever the trail may lead. Scoring is done by giving numbers to the par- ticipants as they complete the course. Individuals and teams with the lowest numbers are the winners. This fall sport takes a rigorous training program and requires endurance and stamina. Students feel that it is very beneficial. Ben Shirley said, I enjoyed it. It gets you in shape. Karla Fife noted that, Cross country takes a lot of hard work and dedication, but long after the hard work and the meets are over, the feelings of success and accomplishment make it all worthwhile. Each cheerleader sacrificed time and energy to plan, practice, and perform new cheers. Not only did they light up the games with their enthusiasm, but they also worked with the Spirit Club, made posters, and planned pep assemblies. Led by Stacy Larson, they helped us remember and support our teams. 126 JV Cheerleaders Mary Ann Rydalch Rebecca Thatcher Susan Barrett Charlotte Walker Sexier than Bo Derek, Louder than a locomotive, Able to leap bleachers in a single bound. My name ' s Bill, and my name ' s Scott; and we ' re here to tell you about American football games! Assemblies 138 If this is a pep assembly, why is everyone so enthusiastic! Jack Lythgoe puts us through Stages of Hypnotism. There ' s one thing about high school that we never learn. What time class ends on assembly schedule!! This year Madison students were treated to four National School assemblies, as well as numerous pep assemblies. The first National School assembly was once again Jack Lythgoe, the hyp- notist. The second assembly was a visit from a Swiss Yodeler. She not only transformed the auditorium into the mountains of Europe, but she per- formed the impossible — taught Terry and Spencer how to dance. The next assembly was a trampoline demonstration. The performer taught volunteers from the audience how to play a new game on the trampoline. The object was to jump up and push a ball through a hole in the net and onto your opponent ' s side. Our last assembly was a demonstration of the American Footbag games, or Hacky Sack as most know it. This forty minutes was filled with lectures on the background of the games, rules on how the games are played, and actual games (using members of the studentbody and faculty). It concluded with a choreographed routine of tricks we can do with the footbag. Pep assemblies were held at noon in the commons. These assemblies were usually organized by the cheerleaders, aided by the spirit club, pep band, and coaches, as well as the players themselves. They did much to promote spirit and support for the teams. I bet that ' s the first boy that ' s ever run away from Melanie! 139 Somebody lost a contact. Is Kevin dancing with the plant or Vicky? She came just for the refreshments. The first girls ' choice dance of the year always has a large attendance, and this year ' s Bobcat Boogie was no excep- tion. On the night of October 23, hun- dreds of bare feet and Hawaiian shirts were seen in the gym and foyer of Madison High. Sponsored by the Drill team, the dance ' s theme was Love Me Tomor- row sung by Sally Stallings during in- termission. Also each member of the Drill team and her date were introduc- ed. Youth Legislature Youth Legislature offers area students opportunities to study government first hand. At the Ricks College invitational in January, eighty-one Madison students, under the direction of government instructor Cliff Jaussi, put on a winning cam- paign to get Kathy Raybould elected to one of the key posts, that of Chief Justice. Kathy received an all-expense paid trip to Washington, D.C. where she visited the Capitol, was a guest of the Supreme Court for a week and met President Reagan. Next year she will preside as Chief Justice over the Youth Supreme Court in Idaho. Then — who knows — ? Kathy might well become one of our future national legislators. 150 Madison ' s eighty-nine member delegation worked hard to elect their candidate. Preparations for the musical began as early as December when tryouts were held and the play cast. Then came the building of the set, and the long hours of rehearsing. The play, which is the modern version of the Bible story of Joseph who was sold in Egypt, was sung entirely. Because there were no speaking parts, each actor had to work all the harder. Finally on the nights of March 10, 11, and 12, the preparations were over and it was time to entertain. A large audience each night was receptive, and the play was billed a success. Todd Ham- mond said, This was a great play. It turned out to be a lot fun- ner and harder than basketball. Everyone I know had a good time. Julie Stubbs also said, The play turned out really well because it had so much variety. The cast was the best.
